Coming Off Propranolol (Page 2)
Updatedi have stopped taking propranolol 80mg 3days ago and would like to know if there is any side effects coming off them
Stupid as I'm gonna sound, can u give me a bit of an idea about your low carb diet. Thx again for your encouragement
I was on 20mg a day, 10mg twice a day, i was told to try just one a day now by a locum dr, only been on tabs for 5 Wks anyway, iam getting lots of minor sharp pains in my upper arm, chest, had the odd pain in my head, is making me abit worried, don't know if this is just side effects of lowering the dose, but my understanding is that you taper the dose so you don't get the side effects, hate not knowing what's going on.
Thank you to all who have replied on this thread. Since my post (#13 in March, 2013) I have been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. It turns out that the propranolol is can control tremors. Therefore, when I missed the med the tremors, which had likely be present in some form for a long time, appeared. In addition, I take Requip for what I have thought was restless legs. Requip is indeed a Parkinson's drug. I have been on the propranolol for over 20 and the Requip over 10 years. So, long story short, I have probably been suffer from Parkinson's for over 10 years but the meds I have been on have controlled it until now. I am now also on additional meds for the Parkinson's. Thanks again for all the comments.
I can't tell u in any comforting words how sorry I am to hear about your Parkinson's. my dad has it and its been difficult for him. I would never have thought propranolol could mask other deseases like that. Know that I will be praying for u
Nana, thank you so much! I am, I feel, good care and am trying to educate my self as much as possible.
I was told to one 40mg Tablet a day whether I was anxious or not, and up to 3 on days where I had to do something out of my comfort zone.
I soon noticed that I was taking 2 or 3 most days, and as a result I became very lazy and ill motivated, tired and even 'zombie like' to my friends. I couldn't sleep and one night during the early hours I went to the bathroom and saw myself in the mirror, I looked as white as a ghost and couldn't feel my lips and fingers.
I'm due a review, where I intend to tell my doctor I want off of these tablets as soon as possible.
But don't, like me, try to stop them suddenly. I tried 3 times to stop suddenly and I only ever made it to day 2 each time. Sweating, cold, weak, feeling my worst. My uncle even said I looked like he did when he had a heart attack.
Garry, 27yrs old - 40MG a day for Anxiety
I was on 20mg a day, i took them for Eptopic heart beats, (missed heart beats). They have helped with missed beats but I've had lots of side effects while I've been on them, tiredness, zombie like, headaches, dry mouth and throat, ulcers on my tongue, my taste buds have been horrible couldn't taste food properly, stomach feeling yuck. Heartburn and i dont get heartburn normally, I've always been able to hear my heart beating in my ear for a few years now, but it seems even louder now when I wake up in the morning, I feel these tablets have made that situation worse, also I have now gone down to 10mg a day, 1 a day, I've started to get lots of shooting pains in my arm, back, chest and head occasionally, I've even felt a very slight and quick feeling of tightness in my chest, but that hasn't been very often, sick of being on them now, need to get of them, I've even been referred to have blood tests, to illiminate everything.
I have been on 80mg of propranalol for about 25yrs.I just stopped taking them about 4 wks ago.I am having horrendous headaches, sweating, feeling cold, but my worst thing is my blood pressure has shot up to 182 over 112.last week. This week it is 152 over 100.I am SO FED UP as I have lots of health issues and am virtually bedbound.(also am diabetic) Please help if you can!!
Did u stop cold turkey? CuZ I did that the first time I quit and it was a nightmare. The migraines were insane and my heart was beating out of my chest and I only took it for a year. You've been taking it for 25 so u really need to go slow. Four weeks is way to soon to be off . It's a slow tedious process. Best of luck to u. Sounds like u need a break from all these health issues.
Dear Nana. Thanks for replying to my problems with my cold turkey after 25 yrs of taking 80 mg of propranolol.I also came off enalapril ( blood pressure tablets) 9weeks ago as my BP was 99 over 61.I do not know what to do now.I am so disheartened as I felt happy about coming off 9 tablets a day(it felt really good) until all the side affects kicked in.What to do now???
What are your side effects coming off the Bp pills. I find that stopping any prescription medicine usually makes everything worse enforce it in finally gets better. my specialist keeps increasing my thyroid meds cuZ my pituitary gland is sleeping(I think it's in a coma lol) so my goiter won't budge. I recently went to a bio resonance treatment and feel a thousand times better. A lot if people think its bologna but it seriously has saved my life. It woke up my pituitary gland and I am not taking any meds the past two days and feel so much better. The lady I go to gas helped with diabetes too. If your sick enough u are willing I try anything and that's where I was at.
Dear Nana. What is bio resonance treatment?? I had been on my BP tablets for 20 yrs and cold turkey with these also.I am in an horrendous state. My feet and fingers are all dead(but SO PAINFUL)due to Diabetes.I have severe Arthritis, severe Fybromyalgia,an Hiatus Hernia and stomach ulcers. Also my teeth are all rotten and dropping out and my hair is also falling out.I also have breathing difficulties.I am at my wits end and do not know which way to turn.Oh and I might have Glaucoma!!! I will try ANYTHING!! Any alternative methods?? xx
Im on the same dose only been three months and i cant take the chest pain anymore so do u just keep taken half twice a day till your pills are done? I got 60 pills
You have got to be kidding me. you poor soul. Could the meds have caused the aide effects of hair and teeth falling out? i know ive read those are some side effects from thyroid meds and propranolol. I can't explain it as well as if you google bioresonance and they explain it much better then I can. It's sound waves and it aligns your problem areas with those sound waves. It takes about three hours and you sit holding two steel rods that are hooked up to a machine and the person doing the treatments tests your organs and problem areas and then uses the machine to align your problem areas. Like I say google can explain it way better.
I was taking 120mg a day and so I tapered off really slowly the second time around. ( my dr demanded I go back on propranolol back then and so after finally weaning myself off started the curse all over again. I took it every other day for two weeks then the third week every third day and then every fourth the next two weeks and so on. Don't freak out if u need more time cuZ that's very common but you haven't taken yours for very long so you won't need much effort before your good to go
Hi Nana.I was on them for 25 yrs and BP tablets for 20 yrs.I have gone cold turkey on both and I will NEVER go back on them.Tablets are dangerous and after all these yrs I blame them for a lot of my conditions.I have NO LIFE and I do not think there is ANY WAY OUT.Side affects are horrendous, but WHO CARES??
Stopped taking propranol 80mg daily, 2 weeks, and I am still light headed, sometime I get the spins when I stand or make quick movements, bp went to 150/100. Yes I got off the med coldturky, I was just tired of taking 7 pills a day. Comming off of the drug is like comming of Paxil. Libido has improved immmedatealy. I wonder if the side effects out way the cure. Anyony know how long it takes to come off the effects. Thank you for all the information on this blog everone
Dear Craig.I went cold turkey 4 weeks ago after being on 80mg of propranalol for 27yrs and also 10mg of enalapril which is a BP tablet for 20 yrs.The main side affect I am having is sky high BP.also shaking, bad headaches, dizziness, anxiety and sweating and then feeling really cold and just feeling unwell basically.I know they will start to ease off in the future.(hopefully) I will NEVER GO BACK ON THEM!! If my BP stays at this level I MIGHT have to consider a BP tablet( I hope not) as I have tons of medical conditions, including Diabetes and I am virtually bedbound.Anyway Craig hope you can cope with the side affects as it will be worth it in the long run.xx
I was prescribed Propranolol 80mg slow release capsules about 2.5 months ago. I'd entered a hideous triple-whammy phase of anxiety, depression and insomnia following cancer treatment. Zopiclone knocked me out but magnified my low mood; I was so anxious it broke through Temazepam, which then left me hung over all day, and I only slept one day in 3. I had to give up driving for a month, I didn't feel safe. The GP swapped in the Propranolol for a diuretic I was taking for HBP because of its anxiolytic effects. Gradually the anxiety rolls quietened down, although I'm not able to say whether that's the Propranolol or whether things are just gradually improving.
My sleep had improved but is currently going through a bad phase - I get somewhere between 2 and 7 hours sleep a night, though generally just short of 6. Sometimes I can't get to sleep; most times I wake up too early; sometimes both together. I have dreams that are vivid and disturbing, rather than actual nightmares. Sometimes I dream with great clarity that I can't sleep, so when I wake up in the morning I can't tell whether I've slept or not.
When I can find the right incantation that will actually get me an appointment with my GP of choice, I plan to ask her about coming off the Propranolol gradually - I can't wait to sleep properly again but, of course, I don't want the anxiety rolls coming back. I wondered if anyone had a) had sleep issues with Propranolol 80 and b) if they'd resolved by coming off it and c) how gradually did they come off?
Ta.
Dear Elspeth.I was on them 27years(80mg) Came off them cold turkey!!about 5 weeks ago.The withdrawals are not nice ,BUT I will NEVER GO BACK ON THEM.I only sleep about 2 to 3 hrs a night, but that is not new to me.I too have silly dreams.I think tablets are the worst things on earth and cause more problems than what you are originally taking them for.KEEP OFF TABLETS unless absolutely necessary.Hope that has helped. xx
