Heart (Cardiac) Overview

The heart is a muscular organ found in most animals. This organ pumps blood through the blood vessels. Heart and blood vessels together make the circulatory system. The pumped blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the tissue, while carrying metabolic waste such as carbon dioxide to the lungs. In humans, the heart is approximately the size of a closed fist and is located between the lungs, in the middle compartment of the chest, called the mediastinum. In humans, other mammals, and birds, the ...

Multaq and weight gain

I've been on multaq for my afib diagnosis since April and have gained 12 lbs. in such a short time after just having lost 40 lbs in the many months prior to diagnosis. My healthy eating has not changed and exercising doesn't help to rid the pounds. I can only attribute this new additional weight to multaq. Has anyone else experienced weight gain being on multaq? ## Yes, that is a possible side effect of this medication, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, and dry mouth. However, it should top out around this gain amount and should not continue. If it does, you should contact your doctor. Are you on any other medications? ## Only other new Med started at the same time as Multaq is Eliquis. Otherwise I've been on couple other meds for years. ## I have been taking Multaq fo...

Multaq side effects

Does the tiredness go away after being on Multaq awhile or does the tiredness continue? ## Multaq made me tired for about 6 weeks and then I started to feel more energtic. I love this drug as I have been in rythem since last April. Stick with it, I am sure you will feel better soon. Take care! ## Has anyone used Multaq for v-tach? ## Multaq contains the active ingredient Dronedarone, it is used to treat atrial fibrillation. It is hard to say what might be causing your tiredness, it could be the Multaq, or it could be your heart problem. If it is the Multaq, as was already said in one of the other posts, it will eventually taper off, but it can take 4 to 6 weeks. Are there any other questions or comments? ## I am a registered nurse. My very good friend has been in the hospital many times...

Taking Deplatt as an alternative to Ecosprin

Hello. My mom just underwent an angioplasty and had 2 stents put. She is advised to take ecosprin 75 mg along with ticagrelor 2x a day along with citogard, cilacar TM 1x, and cilacar 5 mg. She has slight high blood pressure and slight diabetes as well. After the surgery she has developed very bad ulcers in her stomach as well as a UTI. She is also anemic... Everytime she takes ecosprin she becomes sick. Is there any alternative to this medication? She used to take deplatt and she was fine. Can she continue with deplatt only?

Asymptomatic Mitral Valve Regurgitation

My wife recently underwent knee replacement surgery. The day before the procedure, she had an ECG and 2D echo tests. The doctor informed us that she has a mitral valve problem and inquired if she had been experiencing any symptoms such as murmurs, dyspnea, or excessive tiredness. My wife has never experienced such symptoms and is reluctant to undergo any further check-ups unless she develops these symptoms. Could you please tell me the name of the medicine that cardiologists typically prescribe for this type of valve problem? ## She should definitely have it checked out, before developing symptoms. Once symptoms appear, she could have already experienced permanent damage to her heart, and there is a risk of complications from MVR being fatal. Ref: Mitral Valve Regurgitation Information ...

Isosorbide Mn Er 30mg

Isosorbide mn er 30ml was added about 8 days ago to my mother meds. She is 85. Two and a half days ago she started complaining of pain from her upper thigh going down toward her knees in both legs. I am wondering if Isosorbide could be the cause since this is the only thing that has changed in her routine. ## Hi Sandy, Is your mom taking any other medications that could potentially have an interaction with Isosorbide? There doesn't appear to be any related side effect information that mentions leg pain or inflammation within the lower extremities, so I'm thinking that Isosorbide could simply be interacting with another med or that this is more or less a just a rare side effect of the drug that isn't listed with the other more common side effects. In either case, it sounds li...

Multaq and thinning hair

I have been on Multaq for about two months. I have an artificial heart valve and atrial fibrillation. The drug seems to work well so far, however my hair is thinning. Has anyone else had this problem? Yesterday the doctor said my heart rate was normal. What are other side effects that have been experienced? ## Only problem I've had is it doesn't work for me. Cardioversion has not worked either. Guess I'm one of the 40% that has Afib after By-Pass surgery. Looks like Coumaden or surgery. ## Been taking Multag for 3 mos and my hair is coming out really bad. Also, my scalp itches. I can put up with other side effects but not losing my hair. Think I need to call my cardiologist about this. ## Hair thinning, and hair loss are not listed as known side effects of Multaq, the FDA li...

Brilinta issues

Hi I have had 2 stents placed around 2 weeks back and was put on Brilinita 2 tablets of 90 mg each per day. Ever since I have started using this medication, I have had a headache all around my head - its not very painful but it is annoying, seems like slight electricity in my head all the time, along with this I am having chest pain on my right side which comes and goes - my cardiologist told me its got nothing to do with Brilinta - I am not too sure as my other issues such as blood pressure and diabetes is very much in control. Nothing else is wrong with me. Anyone else has had similar effect while using Brilinta? ## Can Brilinta cause diarrhea/loose stools? I've been on it for a year. At first I had diarrhea. It went away but the loose stools never really did. And I still have occ...

Multaq and heart rate

I have been on Multaq one week. I do not have reduced a-fib and my heart rate is still around 80 which is normal for me. My doctor made a point of telling me to get my coumidin checked. I could go too high or too low. ## Are you also post MI with structural damage to the heart and low ejection/fraction? Just wondering what a safe heartrate is for someone with these issues and if a heartrate in the 80's makes the heart work harder. ## Sandra, any elevated heart rate means your heart is working harder, but a level in the 80's is not dangerously high, mine also typically runs that high. Some people just tend to have higher, or lower rates then others. What heart rate does your doctor look for? Jackie, how are you doing on the Multaq, now? Has there been any change? Are you also tak...

Alcohol and Brilinta

Can you consume alcohol while taking Brilinta? What are your experiences? Thank you ## It would be best not to imbibe, without your doctor's approval, because alcohol can also cause blood thinning, and coupled with the Brilinta, it could cause your blood to become too thin, which can be very dangerous. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Brilinta as possibly including nausea, dizziness, risk of bleeding, diarrhea, and slow heart rate. Ref: Brilinta Information Are you on any other medications?

Brilinta vs Plavix

Brilinta is newer than Plavix and a superior medicine if you can tolerate it. I experienced dizziness, confusion, and chest pain for about three months while taking Brilinta following a stent procedure. I recently switched to Plavix and the side effects have gone away. I recommend trying Brilinta if you can tolerate it because it is slightly superior for avoiding a heart attack or stroke, however if you continue to have side effects you might want to switch to Plavix.
