I have been on Propranolol for about 13 years. Initially 3 x 40mg a day for severe migraines. As I have got older my hormones have changed and the migraines decreased both in intensity and frequency, so I lowered my does a few years ago to 40mg per evening as my life had changed too. I have been having nightmares/terrors which affect my husband's sleep and well being. I never had them before taking propranolol. I've also had restless legs, trouble sleeping, lethargy, mood swings, palpitations, cold feet, low libido . Recently i have had joint pain and was prescribed Amitriptyline which certainly helped joint pain but i felt tired, larthargic, had sluggish memory and was moody the next day. I've decided to come off propranolol after reading it could be the cause of many of my symptoms over the years which I hadn't connected with the propranolol until researching night terrors. I stopped taking both propranolol and amitriptyline 3 days ago and feel so much more positive and enthusiastic about life. i'm waking up refreshed and ready to go. I have been having headaches though and feeling a little bit racy, but happy still and so i can cope with that if it's only temporary. Also I haven't had the stiff hands and joints either that have been troubling me for the last year or so. Be interested to know if my husband notices the difference in me that I certainly feel positive about.

I have been on 80mg/once a day for 6 mths for migraines. I have never had a weight problem untilI started propranolol. I workout 5 times a week and maintain a low carb 1200 calorie a day diet. I have gained close to 20 lbs and there is nothing I can do to lose it. My dr tried to tell me the the propranolol is not the issue, but I know my own body and I've never had weight gain in my belly or neck until I started propranolol. She had me try to wean myself off twice but I couldn't handle the chest heaviness, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath. I decided to see a cardiologist. He had me alternate 80/mg 1day and 40/mg the next day for a week. The first 2 days were tough but I made it through. Now I am starting 40mg everyday for a week. Once I'm okay with that we will alternate 40mg one day& 20 mg for a weekand so on...Hoping it works!!!! I just want to be off this and lose this weight!!! I'll take a migraine over this!!! Did it take anyone a while to lose the weight once they were finally off it????

Dear CJ.I was on 80mg of Propranalol for 27yrs.I have come off them "cold turkey" at the beginning of August.I am suffering horrendous withdrawal symptoms,BUT it is worth it.I could NEVER understand why I was as big as I was because I only had a small appetite. My main worry was my hair loss and breathing problems. The medical people were not interested,so I took matters into my own hands(so to speak)My breathing is a LOT better as I am NOT having as many episodes as I used to have.My hair loss is no better,so I will probably come off some of my other tablets.I am "virtually bedbound" so don't exercise like your self BUT I have lost 2 stone.I NEVER put this problem down to the tablets BUT since then I have found out that they CAN cause weight gain and breathing problems.WHY DON'T the medical people tell you this?? I NOW SAY THAT TABLETS CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS THAN THE CONDITIONS YOU ARE TAKING THEM FOR.I HATE TABLETS FULL STOP.I am experiencing sweating episodes, trembling, dizziness, severe headaches(all withdrawal symptoms)BUT it is better than taking THOSE TABLETS!! So CJ I am sure you WILL lose the weight when you come off them. What would Drs.do if they didn't automatically dish out horrific medication??? No more new tablets for me EVER!!!

I'm now on day 10 since stopping propranolol. I have been getting headaches daily and feeling a little racy and anxious. Sometimes I feel a little tightness in my chest. My moods and mood thoughts are a little worrying too. I have made an appointment with doctor for next week and am sure I'll get a telling off for stopping abruptly, but just want to get my BP checked etc to make sure all OK. I'm determined not to go back on propranolol unless my migraines come back. I'm hoping the symptoms will soon settle down but not sure how long it takes. I will keep you posted on symptoms etc. which may be helpful for anyone coming off propranolol.

Your post sounds like I could have read it myself! If I skip my propranolol for 1-2 days my hands start shaking, then gets worse and spreads with each dose skipped. A neurologist told me that I probably always had a tremor, and never noticed it. I knew that was crap! Im convinced that its a withdrawl of the medication. At one time I stopped taking it for a month to try to get off of it. I had to beg the doctor to put me back on it! I couldn't take the tremor, and it was effecting my job. I guess I will have to be a life time user of propranolol.

Well its now 31 days since I stopped taking Propranolol. Doctor supported me and advised that if migraines do return to weigh up if they are worse than side effects of propranolol and vice versa. After two weeks I started to feel normal again with headaches subsiding. However, I picked up a virus and had flu - hot and cold chills followed by chest infection and am now on antibiotics! Perhaps my immune system was low? Still have cough and waking up with headaches - probably caused through coughing so much but hope that I will soon feel better again. It's difficult to say if coming off Propranolol is the root cause of symptoms or whether I'm just attributing them to it. I will post an update in couple of weeks time but still am determined to stay off Propranolol. As a positive, my night terrors have ceased and I have not experienced restless legs since either and anxious feelings have gone. I suppose after thirteen years on Propranolol - one month off is early days still.

It has been a month since I started weening myself off 80mg of Propranolol. I am finally down to 5 mg/day and hope to be totally off it by next week. I had a very hard time going off this medication. My headaches were horrible but the chest palpitations have been the worst! I would feel like I was having an anxiety attack...but have never had anxiety...or so I thought..before taking Propanalol. The best part so far has been sleeping better through the night. On the medication I had very disturbed sleep and the dreams were insane. I also have so much more energy than I did! My migraines & high blood pressure are back so my Dr is waiting until I am totally off the med to see what we need to do about the BP.

I have been on 80mg for ten years for heart issues which I am now told I do not have! So I've stopped em abrptly. Having all symptoms as listed by folks here but determined to stay off em. I've gained weight too and have ] very small appetite. I asked six times to be reviewed before doc did - or I could have come off em years ago!

I took pranolol for over a year a year later i found my self frusterated as my girl friend and i where unable to have intercourse because the pranolol decreased my libido. Been off it for almost a month and still a little skeptical about if that was to blam for the malfunction.

You are a ridiculous man, a victim of the placebo effect. The drug helped you (it helped me for over 20 years) perhaps it helped you for a very long time as well.. your mind is why you can't stop taking it Yes tapering off is for the best because it's not easy t. But if it takes longer than six or seven days, you are probably dependent.. Yes, I understand that abruptly stopping propranolol causes rebound hypertension. but six months is more than pointless . Understand thy Self (you didn't want to stop).

Whoa there Steve! We are all different and react differently to taking the stuff in the first place and to coming off it. I took Propranolol 80mg for over twenty years and started to think it could be the cause of some problems. Doctor advised tapering off and that worked fine until the last 10mg. As soon as I try to stop that last 10mg (which is, let's face it, a tiny dose) the migraines return big style. I feel like a real person again on the lower dose and various symptoms have gone. So you can keep cold turkey.

I still wake every morning with a headache, but it trends to go away with the propranolol. Everything else has changed though. No motivation to do things, no libido, constipated, gained weight, tired vision, cold at night, and can't sleep. I also want up stop these pills, I've only been taking them for 3 Weeks, but see too many side effects to continue. My Dr wants me to continue longer, but I'm going to quit. I have to.

I'm doing the same thing. Ten milligrams at morning and night. I went cold turkey for four days and in the middle of the night my heart is racing. I went back to ten milligrams to keep a lid on things. I am taking it for heart palpitations, of which it does almost nothing for.

So sorry Clive, I was in a mood that day. You are doing better than I am, I still get hand tremors when I take less than 20mg. Good luck to you.

I was on a Propranalol 80mg a day for 27 years.I just stopped them COLD TURKEY.Yes the withdrawals were horrendous but I stuck to it and it "paid off" That was last July/August time and also came off 10 mg of Enalapril COLD TURKEY which is for High blood pressure and I was on these for 20 years.I expected my Blood pressure to zoom up BUT it lowered and it is really TOO LOW NOW.(I don't know why this has happened??) I HATE TAKING TABLETS AND CERTAINLY FEEL BETTER NOW I HAVE STOPPED TAKING THESE NINE A DAY.
