Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 59) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Marge,
I Need to go back on it.
If your Mom was better on Lopressor I would try & get the Drs. to put her back on. I have been off of it now for 3 months. No better. Heart rate always over 100. Here & There MAYBE 95. B.P always in the hypertensive range where none of them were elevated.
Thanks Suzanne, You're right it is poison. Since I stopped taking it a few days ago I've had the worst few days of my life. I really feel for these people who are trying to get off this stuff who have been on a higher dosage for some time. My doctor prescribed it like it was completely harmless. When I went to get the prescription filled the pharmacist said "I'm sure you're doctor explained some of the side effects of this drug already but....." He went on to tell me all the scary stuff. My doctor didn't tell me anything. After the pharmacist got finished, my eyes kind of teared up a little. I'm already on an ace inhibitor and diuretic and I'm thinking when will this end, more and more drugs. When the pharmacist saw how I was a little upset he said "I can guarantee you that you will live a lot longer than someone not taking these medications." I didn't believe that for a minute. Still can't believe he said that.
Ray, I'm sorry you're going through the horrible detox from this nasty drug. I think it took me more than 6 days but I'm feeling better now. Hang in there!
Please see my post from March. Take action. I didn't sleep for 3 days because of a rapid heart rate. I had a TIA (mini stroke) within the first 24 hours after being taken off cold turkey! Woke up Saturday morning with no short term memory. Within a week, I was in the hospital transported by ambulance with shortness of breath and pressure in my chest. Fortunately, it was not a heart attack. Side effects were completely gone in 10 days. Please don't wait get medical attention now!
Did you have the a fib before starting the beta blocker ? Why were you put on it in the first place? Where these things from the drug or pre existing conditions.....
One more comment, the dr never admitted to making a mistake, and I ended up paying all the medical expenses. I do have a new doc for my Bp meds now. You have to be proactive for your health. Don't trust the dr office for second hand medical advice!
I sympathize with all of you. Rick I'm going through a similar thing right now. After getting off Metoprolol I started taking some new natural supplements for BP that I hadn't tried yet (I've tried everything), I cut way down on salt and for a few weeks my BP was excellent. I was so happy, I thought I had found the answer. I was still on Lisinopril and HCTZ diuretic but I had hope that I could get off those too eventually. THEN, all of a sudden my blood pressure went up a lot to 150's/ 90's. I watched it for several days and it remained that way. I called my Dr. Monday of this week and they got me in that afternoon. She all but said the reason it was high was because I stopped the Metoprolol. So now she gives me a double diuretic, the HCTZ and Triamterene. She tried to give me this in August but I wouldn't take it. It raises potassium levels which can be very dangerous so you have to have your levels monitored. I hate going to the doctor and didn't want to do that. So I took the prescription this time because I know I need to get my BP controlled. OMG within 5 minutes of taking it yesterday I felt nauseated, light headed, headachy, horrible, I couldn't drive so I had to cancel everything for the day! And my BP shot up even higher. I called the Dr.'s office told them how I felt, she called me back later saying "you're not giving it time to work, these drugs don't work that fast" I can't remember too many times in my life when I felt that bad. I also started having chest pains since the Metoprolol. She listened to my heart and said I think you're fine but I'm sending you to a cardiologist for a stress analysis. My insurance won't pay so that's out. I feel like these drugs are slowly killing me. Out of desperation I made an appointment with a naturopath who specializes in cardiology. It won't be cheap but I want my life back and to be free of all these drugs. When I filled my prescription Monday the pharmacy was short 18 pills. They said they would have more by the end of the week. When they call I'll tell them I don't want them, keep them because if I pick them up they're going in the trash. I don't care if I paid for them or not. I have read this before and I believe it's true, the blood pressure meds themselves keep you needing more and more meds to control it by depleting magnesium and other things that would keep your BP down normally. Good luck to you all.
Well my doctor is not in the office today I'm still sick and now her assistant is strongly suggesting that I go to the hospital so I'm on my way to the hospital.
I am also getting off this drug can anyone help me please... {edited for privacy}
Travis, how were you taking the medication when you were on it? And how are you weaning off right now?
Ruby, I was only on this drug for less than a month. When I got off it took about one to two weeks to feel better but lately I'm having racing heart at times and my blood pressure is all over the place. Last night 144/107. This morning 101/78 with a high pulse rate. I just wonder if this drug did some kind of damage in only 3 weeks? I feel terrible, shortness of breath. So depressing. Are you feeling any better?
Becky, same thing is happening to me. I took the med for 3 weeks as well. All the side effects are gone and blood pressure is pretty reasonable. Except my heart rate is always in the 90s during the day and early evenings. After midnight it sometimes goes down to the 80s. But I'm worried that it won't go back to normal. I've been off the medication fully for 3.5 weeks now.
My heart rate does the same thing and my blood pressure. Dr. Stephen Sinatra is an intergrative cardiologist, he has a page where he answers questions. Of course without your medical history he can only say so much. I described my symptoms and he said it sounds like A Fib. Surely this medication didn't cause that in 3 weeks?? I'm scheduled for a stress test and I have to wear a holter monitor (not sure of the spelling) for 48 hrs., maybe they can find out what's causing this. My insurance won't pay for either one but I have to at least try to figure this out. My doctor scheduled these things because of the chest pain but she said I know you're fine. She makes me feel like a hypochondriac. Time to find a new doctor.
Travis, I am feel the same way. My sense of consciousness is cloudy and I get shots of dizziness. It is getting better. I was on metoprolol for over nine years so I expect it to take awhile to get back to normal. I look forward to being drug free in April. I started with 75 mg, then 50 mg and now I am taking 25 mg. It will get better just make sure your being weaned properly.
Hi John, I posted yesterday but don't see it. Anyway, I've been off the medication since early September. After 2 or 3 weeks I thought I was fine and then the racing heart & chest pains came back even worse. I hope that doesn't happen to you. I'm scheduled for a stress test and I have to wear a Holter monitor for 48 hours. Hopefully I'll find out something that may be causing this.
Hi becky... what do you mean by a racing heart? How fast does it get? Is it just alway fast or is it like mines where its normal then itstarts besting fast out of no where?
Hi Travis, sometimes it gets in the low 100's. A lot of times it's in the 90's. It starts racing for no reason. When my blood pressure is high, my heart rate is low (upper 70's, low 80's) and when my blood pressure is low (good low) my heart rate is high. I asked my doctor about it and she seemed to have no idea why. I can't imagine just taking a drug for 3 weeks would cause that but I never had these problems before.
Travis, are you on any BP medication at this time? Have you ever been treated for anxiety/ panic?
200/110 is a very high BP. Have you informed your doctor that it's spiked this high?
I know 'staying calm' is impossible during times like this. Hang in there...and keep going to different Dr's if you're not getting results with your current ones.
Weird... I responded to you rick but didn't come up ill wait and try again...
Becky.... I noticed the same thing. That is kinda weird. Ill also ask my cardiologist about that. So far how have you been and how long are you off the pill now?
