Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 58) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Re: RV (# 2480) Expand Referenced Message

So I started loosing weight when they took me of the clonazepam. It started coming back when I took the metoprolol. But I had different side effects on the metoprolol which prompted me to want to stop.
I did loose muscle as well as fat. Metoprolol blocks the adrenaline in the heart , kidneys, and skeletal muscle (that’s it’s main course of action) so it’s not surprising that I lost muscle and fat.
The weight loss was pretty drastic. I lost like 30 lbs in less than a month so definitely not a normal weight loss.
I have not had that specific testing done.

I can say I agree with the doctor from India as far as I do not think it’s a neuro disease. I think it’s still your body trying to adjust back to life without metoprolol. Anytime you take anything your body makes adjustments to it’s presence. Say drinking coffee every morning. Your body adjusts to it presence. Once that adjustment is made and you stop drinking the coffee your body must make additional adjustments to the absence of the caffeine. It works like that for any chemical or substance. It’s not a quick adjustment either. It takes time. Your body has to create new neural pathways to those chemical changes which sometimes can take a couple of years. If it’s getting too drastic you can go back on the metoprolol, wait until your body stabilizes and then do a very slow taper. Jumping off of 25mg is a high mg to jump off of in my book. I only jumped off 12.5mg and I’m still suffering over a year later.

Hi! Welcome. So sorry you are dealing with all this nonsense too. I have been off metoprolol for 408 days and I can say it’s so much better than the beginning. I do think I still deal with side effects from it and my body is super sensitive to everything but it’s getting better. My IST seems to be getting better as well and I all only on one dose of 2.5mg of Corlanor once a day. If cardizem is a channel blocker, I took 1/4 pill in December as a one off pill when I randomly dealt with PVCs and it helped. I didn’t have any side effects from a one off pill like I did beta blocker so you might be ok trying it. Are you doing any better?

RV- what’s going on? Are
You still feeling bad? Any diagnosis?

JULIYA- how are you doing girl? Any better ?

Re: TxCandy1 (# 2504) Expand Referenced Message

Glad you are doing better. It seems like the process takes so long. Much longer than I had hoped. I'm 13 weeks off (10 if I want to count the few days I had to take it again for bad withdrawal symptoms). Having a mix of good days and bad days. They seem pretty equal right now. Still have some high heart rate days and notice if I exert myself too much then the next 3-4 days are bad. I'm having frequent palpitations (pac's) that are mostly worse at night. I'm wondering if anxiety is playing a part in this. I haven't taken any other meds out of fear. I feel more sensative to everything even foods and sugar will definitely give me palpitations now. I even feel more sensitive to my own emotions if that makes sense! I needed the metoprolol when I started it but it has definitely ruined my life right now :(

Re: Tinker (# 2522) Expand Referenced Message

Oh gosh! How do you deal with ectopic all day long?? What has your cardio said about it?

Good call for rheumatologist just in case. That might provide some answers.

I’m telling you beta blocker jacked me up good! I never had all this crazy and crazy sensations until I took that damn pill. I’ve been off it for over a year and still don’t think I’m totally healed from it.

I’m kinda wondering if I had COVID in January 2020 before it “hit the US” . I was the sickest I had ever been. Was in bed for a better part of a week and tested negative for flu and strep. Obviously there was no COVID test. Then in March 2020 we went to Ireland right before it got COVID crazy in us and everything shut down and well later after being home is when this all started for me and sent me to the ER. I wonder like you if that’s what has caused all the crazy and sensitivities to beta blocker but I’ll never know. Sigh

I’ve been off cornalor for a week and for the most part I feel normal but I do see that my HR on some days can go a little higher. I don’t feel it but I can see it on my watch. So the question is, do I want to be on meds, or just deal with the possible day that are higher due to potential IST. We shall see what my EP says tomorrow. I sent in my loop recorder reading earlier today so he could look at them and be ready for tomorrow’s call. I really really just don’t want to be on medication.

I was given the calcium channel blocker as a pill in pocket before corlanor and I will say, I would take 1/4 of the pill and it would settle things down for the moment. I never had any side effects using it like that. I didn’t use it often but for days where I felt
Bad, the 1/4 pill was fine and no bad effects. It’s not like the beta blocker

Have you been evaluated for SIBO?
I’ve been following this chain for the past 6 months as I’ve been having similar symptoms as many others on here. My initial symptoms started as tachycardia after I had a virus back in December. Doctors couldn’t figure out a cause since all my cardiac tests came back normal, so they put me on a small dose of metoprolol. I felt like I had every side effect under the sun and tapered off after 2 months. Still having issues 6 months later. It wasn’t till my last ER visit that the doctor referred me to a GI specialist. There is a strong connection between the gut and nervous system and cardiovascular systems. I am now being treated for SIBO and hoping this helps. Just wanted to share in case it was an avenue you haven’t pursued yet.
Metoprolol can decrease the activity of DAO which is an enzyme that breaks down histamine. SIBO also decreases its activity and could explain any new sensitivities to food or medication.

Ugh this sucks! I’m
Super annoyed with my EP too. I feel like they just write it off as anxiety because we are young.

I’ve been having weird dizzy sensations this week and it’s freaking me out. I don’t even know who to go to at this point. I see a hormone specialist next week. Hopefully she will listen to me and maybe help me get to the bottom of all this crazy.

IM SO SICK OF IT

Well, my SIBO turned into full blown Mast Cell Activation. Luckily I was able to get in with a functional medicine doctor who made the diagnosis and is now treating me. I’m still not stable, but hoping I’m at least on the right path now.
I wonder how many of us who struggled with metoprolol actual have underlying MCAS. With MCAS, people have a tendency to react to inactive ingredients in medications. Metoprolol can be extra problematic in that in can inhibit DAO which is the enzyme that breaks down histamine.
For me personally, I think the MCAS caused my initial tachycardia. Since the root cause was never identified, I was given metoprolol as a “bandaid” and that only made things worse.
Just wanted to share my story in hopes that it is helpful to others.

Hi Judy-wondering how long it ended up taking before the side effects went away? I was on 25mg, weaned down to 12.5, then every other day, then every third day to now-I have been completely off for 7days now. Yesterday I felt good and today I feel horrible again-dizzy, light headed, heart palpatations, nauseous. I'm hoping I'm thru the hardest but would love to know how much longer to expect. Any info would be appreciated!

I have been off Metoprolol six weeks and still have shortness of breath, swelling of ankles, etc. I just wonder if they will ever go away or if, as I read, this RX has caused the RX induced Lupus in me. I had a bone marrow this week and cannot hear full results until the 19th. I was on 12.5 and would appreciate hearing from someone as to how long the side effects hang around after you discontinue. I hate to think the rest of my life is going to be like this all because of a poisonous RX I should never have been given.

Watch out. I quit sleeping, experienced short term memory loss. But thought I was getting better, before I experienced shortness of breath, extreme pressure in my chest and rapid heart rate. I had to be transported by ambulance. Don't wait keep your doctor in the loop. A Dr. in ER suggested going back on the medication which I via-mutely declined. After more research, I found that that was a good idea to go back on the medication at a low dose and slowly get weened off of the medication. Don't mess around with this drug and keep your Dr. in the loop. Good luck!

Toni, I was only on 12.5 mg. and I did wean off for five or six days at half of this dosage and then every other day the next week, even though my doctor told me to quit cold turkey. I had read enough to know you were supposed to wean off. I still have shortness of breath and swelling of the ankles and legs. I was on this for about six-seven months. I just wonder if it takes that long for it to get out of your system. I am really scared that I shall never by normal again.KETXL

WOW 100% improved? Did your MD replace the Metoprolol with another med or have you been totally med free?

I was on Metopolol for about a year and a half and stopped it this past winter after having all the terrible side effects it produces or can produce, including shortness of breath, sore tongue, hallucinations, etc. etc.and then I was sent to hematologist-oncologist who diagnosed me with a rare disease called Amyloidosis-anybody else on Metoprolol come away with this diagnosis. I have been to Mayo and it confirmed and I start treatment this next week.

Hi Guys! Sorry just seeing the replies. I been off the awful med since June 6th. The doc told me just to stop the metoprolol. OMG the first 2 weeks were the worst. I was so dizzy and weak it was unbearable. I was having horrible body aches I could barely get out of bed. I seriously thought I was going to be stuck feeling like that forever.
BUT It is so true that you start feeling better a little everyday. After the first 2 weeks off I started getting more energy. The dizziness comes and goes now.. it was a 24/7 ordeal before. I was even dizzy laying down. That medication also caused me severe anxiety.Seems like it is very common for medication like this to bring anxiety on. So I really feel some of us are having an ongoing anxiety issue (which causes some awful symptoms) from the medication more than withdraw after a certain point. Just my thoughts :-/
I also started a supplement called Intramax. Which helps rid toxins from the body. It has also greatly helped me.
This has been the worst thing I have ever when through :-( I just pray that all of you start feeling better also. I do not recommend just coming off metro cold turkey but get off anyway you can!

It appears to me having gone off of LOPRESSOR 2 different times it REALLY does effect your vision and balance. I will also note that I went on the medication at 100 mg in 1990 and within a couple of weeks I went from weighing appx. 100 lbs. to 150.

I suffer from Gastroparesis. I have found LOPRESSOR does help with the nausea for some reason ... Anxiety relief ...

I will simply say it IS so very difficult to quit.

I believe from my reading here I have been on LOPRESSOR longer than anyone.

Also, there IS a Major difference if the pharmacy changes your generic... The Blue pill has Always been fine for me BUT ,,,IF it is changed to the White tablet it Doesn't work & I had to specify...

After heart surgery, the doctors took my mom off her metoporal cold turkey and since she is out of it. She has a cloud in her head, no balance, and has weakness that has already caused her legs to give out? It has been a month. I am Seriously starting to consider to put her back on. Any suggestions? I am a nurse so I can monitor her, but these doctors arent doing crap and heart surgery at 81 is bad enough. She is not recovering even though they say her heart is great. Her pulse is up in the 90s most of the time. But no other problems but the extreme weakness and the dizziness and the fog in her head.
