Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 60) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Hi Travis, I'm doing better the last couple days. Sunday was when my blood pressure went up, I could feel it, I knew it was going to be high when I checked it. It's been good since Monday. I'm not eating a lot of sodium. I also stopped drinking my 16 oz of caffeinated coffee in the morning. This has happened before where my blood pressure was really good for a week or two and then for no reason went way up without doing anything different. I've been off Metoprolol since about mid September. Hang in there Travis!

Hi Tracy & Travis, Tracy that's interesting. I notice lately I have anxiety pretty bad. Never thought about that being a side effect of the drug.

Travis, I started feeling better in a couple weeks after getting off the metoprolol and my blood pressure was actually good for 2 or 3 weeks and then suddenly went back up for no reason. It's been good and bad, since then. Some of the side effects started after I got off.

Susan, I haven't experienced back pain. I looked up the side effects and they have them listed in 3 categories. More common, less common and rare. Lower back pain is listed under the rare side effects.

Hey Michael it could be a side effect. My back has been hurting since I went off it, and my blood pressure and heart rate did go up on Friday to where I was dizzy. and on Saturday my heart rate was racing. Today I felt nothing. You just have to be careful with exercising until you know that these side effects will go away.

Hi... susan
I've been completely off little more then a week now. I have had the rapid heart rate where it spikes up to 140 at sitting which is very scary, dizzy, scared anxious feelings, feeling like I can't beath. That has gottin better. I only have been taking it for two mont hs and it has really messed with my head . Lately I've just been feeling like I'm dreaming or things in a way aren't real or just different. Maybe its because I was so messed up taking the meds for a while my mind has to get use to reality. Has anyone f elt this way?

CZ, I did a search and found a lot of useful information on Metoprolol and tremors. I'm unable to post the link. There is a chart by age group of people who experience tremors on this drug. I'll skip the younger ages. Ages 50-59--21.35% experience tremors, Age 60 plus-62.02%. So it seems more common in your age group.

Hope this helps!

Ive been taking 1 Metoprolol 50 mg 1 time daily for 2 months and I have had high blood pressure readings I am starting ti take one lisinopril 12.5 mg 12 hrs from the time I take the Metropolol last time I checked my blood pressure it was 178/100. How long do you think it will take to regulate my pressure or get it down a bit? I also have to incorporate 2 500mg metformins in a day any suggestions?

Don't stop cold turkey. Taper off over eight weeks. You are physically dependent and must taper slowly.

I have no idea why my. Doctor put me on this stuff. My bp is bottomed out(which it already was) and my testing heart rate went from 48 to 40. I have a valve issue but nothing to worry about at this time. I have gained weight and feel like crap 24 hours a day. Light headed, can't sleep, fuzzy, lethargic. I'm taking 50gms a day since Feb1,2014. I'm getting off this stuff!

My doctor put me on metoprolol for pac's not so bad on the medication. Then found out I was off for a work conference at high altitude and did some research about beta blockers and altitude. Wasn't great. I was on 50mg twice a day. My doctor doubled it to 100mg twice a day which I only did for one day. Then I was taking 150mg a day then the last 2 days I have only take 100mg a day. My doctor told me to just stop and go onto avapro (which I've been on for years for high BP) but a little nervous to stop cold turkey after reading all this. I don't know what to do!!!
