Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 61) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

I kind of have the same symptoms. I've been on Metoprolol 25mg twice a day for nearly 2 years. Started seeing a new doctor and told how i did not like this stuff, so he had me wean off of it and switched me to lisinopril for high bp. So slowly over a months time through the month of april 2014 i halved the dose every week and on april 31st i took my last pill, that was about 2 weeks ago, didn't feel anything at first then last wednesday when i was just sitting I all of a sudden got really dizzy, tried to lay down but I was still dizzy, went to bed hoping it will be gone the next day but it wasn't and now i was feeling feverish/nauseated i really didn't like it. Went to walgreens and got Dramamin to treat motion sickness since thats what i thought and it did help though I can still kind of feel it, feels as the blood pumping in my head just makes me dizzy every pump i feel and of course I noticed my vision is a bit blurry mostly on my right eye, so I covered it and i admit it does help me maintain balance and a bit better. So yeah thats what i've been dealing with so far. I'm glad it is a common symptom for those also getting off of the pill. Sounds like some people were able to get better in about a weeks time so if thats true for me then I should be feeling a whole lot better in about 1 or 2 days time and if not i'm scheduled to see a doctor in 2 weeks anyways and tell her my sad situation.

Although I was asymptomatic a heart cath recommended I have my aeortic valve replaced, which I did in mid april due to stenosis attributed to a lifelong murmur. Have been on metropolol 25mg ER tabs taken right before bed. I have the weirdest vivid nightmares on this. I have kept myself in good shape and have never had high bp. There are some days I am so fatigued I can't get out of bed and everyday at least twice my heart pounds like it's ready to jump out of my chest. After relaying this to my cardiologist, he told me to stop taking it. He didn't say anything about weaning off the drug but my pharmacist told me I had to. Am trying to space out the time between doses at increasing daily intervals. Yesterday was fine after skipping nightly dose. After taking it again last night, I had a recurrance of the same side effects, breathing difficulties, heaviness in chest, nightmares, that I hadn't experienced in weeks. Quitting will be hard.

This is day 5 for me without meds. All the symptoms continue to improve, including bothersome heart palpitations. After I started the meds, I have not really experienced the sinus tachy that got me on it the meds in the first place. I got bothersome heart palpitations that didn't feel normal, but I chalk it up to side effects to med, because they just felt different from my original symptom.

Generic Ativan helped my withdrawal symptoms (I only take half a pill), but I used it sparingly. Mostly I just beared through it. Thankfully symptoms got so much better each day. I read on the internet it takes up to 3 days for the med to be out of your bloodstream, but a month to be out of your cells (don't know how true this is).

I know going through this is hard and frightening at times. I really hope you start to feel better soon.

I AGREE with you! DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE NOT REAL! Don't give up! You are the only one who knows what you feel and doctor's are limited by what they learned in medical school years ago and do not know how to think outside the box! If they haven't picked up a recent medical journal report and read about it, or didn't hear about it at a medical conference then it does not exist. It took YEARS for the medical field to start taking the very real issue of heart attacks in women seriously, a growing cause of death here in the U.S. Doctor's are mere mortals who only THINK they know it all. My message to everyone out there who is scared, frustrated and angry: Don't give up! Find a doctor who will LISTEN to you and adress all your complaints and do all the necessary tests to get to the bottom of what is going on.

Yesterday doc said stop night dosage of metoprolol. Wake with racing heartbeat of 122. BP was 202/99 pulse 131. Has taken over three hours to come down after taking lisinopril and a.m. Metoprolol. Now have a bad headache. An hour ago pulse 146/80 pulse 76. Praise God! I am horrified by all I'm readin here. Thank you all for sharing!! I'm going to call pharmacist later.

Frustrated in Oregon, I take Metoprolol to help regulate the beat in an upper chamber of my heart. Works great and the only time it hasn't is If the pharmacy starts switching brands around on me. You mentioned the confused and flustered state, that's how I know when I missed my pill LOL

Hi Anne
My husband was put on Metropolol and he has shortness of breath like you had. After you went off the meds. did the shortness of breath go away? We are so worried that this will be permanent. We would appreciate your help. The cardiologist is no help at all.
