Muscle/nerve Ache With Eliquis And Niacin Or Statin (Page 5) (Top voted first)

Updated

Since starting Eliquis, I have felt much stiffer and sore in the mornings and during the day with muscle tightness in my neck and back affecting my upper arms. A general sense of early aging that is unpleasant. Anyone else with these symptoms?

I am experiencing the same thing. I started Eliquis March 28, 2017. I am 57. Very stiff and achy in the morning, and if I sit for longer periods...like after driving. Once I move around, it gets better. I will try the Tylenol..

I never related my muscle weakness and pain to eliquis until a tv commercial caught my attention. I walk with a cane, so bad when I get up that I can hardly get to the next room. Seem to get worse every day. I'm going to ask him to give me coumidin. I went to a meeting at a friends recently and could not get up off her couch. How ridiculous!

Thank you. I will remember that. As for age being a factor, i am 75 so that would qualify me lol

Thanks for the input, Wade. Yes, Eliquis does mess with our muscles, just as you are experiencing. And it also affected my breathing, but I think it was due to muscle involvement that affects the breathing process. Seems to be a muscle issue akin to that caused by statins. Just my guess here, but appears similar.
I have been switched to Coumadin, 5 mg, for about 6 weeks now, and I am much better. But still a residual muscle tightness, mostly in my neck and shoulders. I do feel like I am about 90%. Hope all goes well with you.

Judy - I noticed your post was from 2015. Curious, I am in the same boat, blood clot from Hormone Replacement, on Eliquis for six months, stiff joints - omygosh. Feel like I have aged 20 years, too. Did it resolve? How long? I have been off Eliquis now for 10 days. Thank you.

I visit the dentist every 4 months just for check up and usual polishing. I had spoken to him about bleeding gums and he gave teeth the scaling and told me not to be afraid of any bleeding while brushing.

When I went abroad in July/Aug I only used bottled water to rinse simply because I go from a very soft water area to one that's full of minerals, but this time my teeth were hurting like hell, and when I came back home, decided to use good toothpaste and Corsodyl mouthwash. The mouthwash takes your taste for food away so I have been using it just at night so perhaps it would be better to use it at least twice a day.

Last night had frequency of urine and to say tested it with urine sticks shows a good bit of blood in it but told this is a side effect of Eliquis. So many problems with this drug and I ache all over have not had blood work done for just over a year, so I will contact the surgeon to remind them that it's time, and once I get results I will post it on this site.

I don't know Stef but I am doing the same thing and have been for a few years and the cramps/spasms are gradually getting to be an every night all night thing that is wearing me totally out, I do not take Eloquis or Statins. I have had Levaquin in the past that caused the same symptoms and there is a black box warning that it and it's family of antibiotics can cause permanent tendon damage.
I went to a Neurosurgeon who did an MRI and it said that I have a buldging disc and spinal stenosis in my lower back and the stenosis in two more areas also. From the pain I would say middle and neck area. His nurse asked if I would like to schedule steroid shots in my spine to alleviate some of the pain. I said no, I
will forego those. I am allergic to corn and the allergy gets quickly worse all the time, and I'm fearful of getting corn in the glucose they use. I could die from anaphylaxis while they have me sedated for the shots. I have had two surgeries before for bulging disc and stenosis in my low spine. I have read that spinal stenosis can cause leg cramps. Mine was nothing like this before. I have to have some relief. Both my legs go into spasms at the same time most nights, and that includes the entire leg, front and back from hips to toes. Sometimes my hands and even my ribcage spasm and cram. If surgery will give me relief, I will have another one. But I do not want to have one and wake up to the spasms still. So I am trying to rule things out first.
I hope you find out the cause of yours soon. If you do, please post here. Thanks, Bren.

This is MAD MATT again. All I can say is that Eliquis almost put me totally out of commission. Muscle weakness and pain, and tightness in my neck and shoulders. I felt like I had aged 20+ years. At age 77, this is awful. It also messed up my brain. So I demanded a switch to the old standby, Coumadin. I have been on it for 2 months, and almost totally back to normal. As I have for 40 years, I run on the treadmill for at least 4 miles, and can go much more. My comeback was a little slow, but noticed lots of improvement in the first two weeks. SO BE PATIENT if you decide to switch. Eliquis seems to hit us older folks who are very active hard. Just my opinion here. DO NOT LET YOUR DOCTOR TRY TO TELL YOU THIS IS IN YOUR HEAD. THEY ARE DEAD WRONG. Yes, Coumadin requires blood tests, but this is well worth it in getting your life back. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!!

Hi, you are not alone in this problem and if you read messages on this article you will no doubt see that I reply to lots of people. I originally had A.F but that's what TO said despite me being given the all clear by my Cardiologist. I had an Echo Cardiogram along with EGG and Carotid Scan all were negative however new doctor suggested I should take an Anticoagulant really I was never very happy about it but was told well you don't want to take a stroke do you. I then decided to start this wonder drug twice a day and I've now been on it for almost 3 years. It affects my Spinal Stenosis causing burning like pain in feet and legs and I can assure your doctor that I DO NOT have an arterial problem. I walk every day and do not sit about. I now have terrible burning pain at top of fingers. I have more episodes of IBS than ever before and that IS one of the side effects. I have terrible tinnitus, joint pain, including neck, knee and everywhere else there is a joint.
Throbbing sensation over sinus. Terrible insomnia, lucky if I get 2-3 hours of sleep. All in all, we ALL can't be wrong and I for one don't make this up and just wish I had never started it. The crowning factor about ELIQUIS there is no antidote that is of great concern to me and I just wonder how many people know that if you were to be in a road traffic accident you could simply just bored to death and that's not a joke.

I am now on Xarelto since my surgery in May. I have little to no side effects. I would ask to try Xarelto if any of you are having stiffness and soreness. It is a night and day difference switching from eliquis. You can read my past 2 posts to see how awful it was.

Yes I have had horrible experiences. Very sore muscles and very weak. Almost like a person with MS. They ache so much I get little sleep. It upset my stomach as well and I felt like I lived in a fog. I’ve off it for five days and a I feel like a million bucks today. I’m done with it.

Re: David (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Eliquis is like having MS. constant pain in the thighs, weakness, unable to stand for long. Total muscle weakness. It is the worst bleeder of all the thinners per my gall bladder surgeon and has the most side effects. Find another one.

Re: MAD MATT (# 177) Expand Referenced Message

Yes I agree I have had a bit of stiffness from the xarelto so I will watch. It is so much better than the eliquis it is unbelievable. It is strange because they are supposed to be very closely related.

I was able to go natural for 11 years. That's such a good choice when you can make it work.

Re: David (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

One of the first and most prevalent side effects I encountered with Eliquis was shoulder and neck muscle tightness. This led to balance problems for me. I felt terrible. It also caused some mental fogginess for me. My leg muscles got so weak that I could not do my treadmill workouts. Normally, I brisk walked and jogged at about 4.0 MPH and 1 to 1.5% incline for about one hour, 3 times a week. On Eliquis, I was not able to do anything. I was MISERABLE. I am age 77, and have done the treadmill for 40 years. I switched to Coumadin, and now I am back to my old and VIBRANT self. No more of these "new" and tempting anti-coagulants for me. I NOW FEEL GREAT on Coumadin.

Re: Jackson (# 190) Expand Referenced Message

Sounds pretty much like the experience I had with Eliquis. It almost did me in, and also affected my breathing, I just wonder if we are exceptions, or if this is more common than being currently reported. The manufacturer does mention muscle weakness, but nothing about the fogginess. Keep in mind that serious drug reactions are rarely reported by doctors. So for every report you see, there are likely 50 more than recorded. THAT IS A FACT, and FDA is aware of this under-reporting.

Re: Jackson (# 192) Expand Referenced Message

If you feel that you have been irreversibly injured from this drug, I would consult a reputable drug injury lawyer. Also, talk with your doctor about what this drug may have done to your body. You must have some type of medical diagnosis or explanation from your doctor. The situation with doctors is that they are very concerned about litigation against them, so this is tricky. My opinion is that the doctor is not legally liable here, since this is an FDA-approved drug. Just my two cents worth here. I wish you the best, and hopefully healing of this issue.
