Coming Off Propranolol (Page 5) (Top voted first)
Updatedi have stopped taking propranolol 80mg 3days ago and would like to know if there is any side effects coming off them
I have been on a v high dose 200mg/day mainly cos I built up a thes meds over a year. The B-Receptors increase in response to the drug so your tissues are swamped with them and when the drug isnt there in size your central nerv sys is going crazee. Im dan to 60mg now and tapering back at 20mg a week. Get flushes, chest and arm pains and kinda striking anxiety. kept weight off with constant cardio but notice the abdominal fatness diff to shift. Looking forward to using these only on occasions. even then u get rebound anxiety but not like ths
Yes! Yes! Yes! Ache in joints and stiffness all over. Major hair loss. Depression, anger (haven't EVER been an angry person and I'm 50) ankles swell and anxiety attacks and wild dreams. Add to that insomnia. All just since I have taken 10mg in morn and 20mg at night of propanalol. I'm getting off!
I have been on 160mg Inderal for over 2 years for anxiety. I really felt it was time to come off them, Dr prescribed me 1 month 80mgSR then 1 month of 40mg and then said to stop. I have just stopped the 40mg 3 days ago and my lord i feel terrible. I have tremors, i cant think, as soon as i do anything like energetic i feel like im going to have a heart attack. I have a phone appointment with Dr in the morn so will see what he says. I hope it gets better than this as i am pretty much useless the way things are. One other thing is i have given up smoking 3 days ago also as that didnt agree with my anxiety at all so im sure that is having an effect too! Has anyone successfully got off these and were there side effects whilst doing it?
Cristy,
That's exactly what I did, and it worked! I have my life back, so happy!

I've been off these pills for over six months now and my life has improved tremendously as a result. I am age 60 and was on 80mg per day as a migraine preventive which a string of GPs shrugged off as minute when thinking of the doses given for other reasons such as dangerously high blood pressure. It took several months to completely get off them and needed to slowly get down to the tiniest dose of half a 10mg tablet per day before I could completely stop (yes, I was actually cutting pills in half). It seemed like the last bit was the hardest. On the down side the withdrawal symptoms were heart palpitations, migraine, vivid dreams and general agitation. On the plus side it felt like I was becoming myself again and, although it seems we are not allowed to talk like grownups here, my libido soon came back to normal. The latter alone is one big reason why I would tell guys to think carefully before letting your doctor put you on these. They will say it only happens in a few cases. My advice to anyone coming off them would be the sooner the better but do it gradually - even if it takes months. So what do I do to avoid migraines these days? We can all tell the type of headache that is likely to turn nasty and when I feel that coming on I take a prescription Imigran (sorry I don't know the formula name) and a couple of Paracetomol, sit upright in a comfy chair and an hours rest does the trick.
Hi, Sincere thanks to all who have contributed to this thread and shared their stories. I wonder if anyone can help. I have been taking propranolol 30-40mg twice a day for 10 weeks for anxiety - to stop my heart pounding and reduce anxiety. Recently have discovered that it was the cause of my insomnia so have had to reduce to 20mg taken early in the morning so that its effect has expired by bedtime. I did not have time to taper the evening dose because I would never sleep! I then plan taper the 20mg over a few weeks.
Trouble is that from the time that the 20mg expires (mid-afternoon) to bedtime I have no protection and am subject to pretty constant heart pounding which circulates extra adrenalin and exposes me to anxiety. Is it reasonable to hope that my body will adapt to this withdrawal of the drug and that the pounding will stop? Any sense of how long this might take? Many thanks and good health to you all.
I haven't taken it in years, but as I said earlier, I took it to help my restless leg syndrome, which it did to a degree. I've taken benzo's for over 20 years for anxiety. It's just my opinion, but the prop wouldn't have done a damn thing for my anxiety. It is known to help the anxiety of say speaking in front of a large crowd, but I myself have never heard it used as an anti-anxiety in the way that a Xanax, Valium etc., are. I recommend starting out with a low dose Ativan, like a .25 mg., twice a day. A lot of doctors aren't that understanding anymore of the need for a true anti-anxiety. I was lucky, to others I say be insistent. You have to take an active role in your medical treatment as well and asking for some like I described is not asking for enough that you're going to feel on cloud 9, but you'll really notice the lack of stress.
Ativan has a longer half life, Xanax and Valium are stronger tranquilizers, though. I take 2 1/2 mg of Xanax daily. One in the morning, 1/2 in the afternoon, and one in the evening. For insomnia I take 10 mg. Ambien. It's been a life saver for me because I've been known to go for over 2 days without sleep and along with my depression problems, that much lack of sleep is not a good thing. I admit, though, that I come from the belief that if relief can be found in a pill that I don't consider dangerous, take it.
The miracle herb Valarian tincture helped me get off off propranolol and stay off, I'm sticking to mother nature as she has al the answers. God Bless.
Kind Regards Louise Johnson
My doctor told me to take 400mg of Riboflavin, 400mg of magnesium, 400mg of CoQ10, and a baby aspirin. This combo has worked for me, but the side effects of weaning off Inderol are scaring me. My blood pressure is high, dry mouth, chest pain, and heart palpitations.
Hi Dawn,
I have been on deralin for 2 years now for essential tremor. And like you on low dosage...with horrible results. Weight gain, puffiness, vomiting, sleeping all the time....the list goes on!!!! Really! I have since discontinued the medication as negitive symptoms have out weighed the one positive...eg shaky hands.
Im just wondering how long before I see my body return to normal....belly fat?
Thank you
Louise
I have been off propanalol for 3 days now still getting light headednes headaches pains in chest lethargic aching every where periods all over the place stomach sore cold to the bone pins n needles to my toes and hands n lower calf muscles does ant one know how long this effects you ??
This drug propranolol is the DEVIL! Omg...my joints ache, my stomach is huge..bloated...I'm tired and fatigued..depressed for No Reason. My migraines are fewer...but the rest of me is jacked up. I've never eaten a lot and never been lazy...hard to go to work and forget working out. I weaned myself off. It's only been a week. I'm miserable. Good luck on ur choice to stay on or get off. Very few people have little or no side effects at all.
I had neurosurgery 20 yrs ago for epilepsy, and thankfully have been very successful. After surgery, I started getting panic attacks and was put on 80mg propranolol a day. Last Christmas I was slowly weaned off all of the drug. I felt awful, my mouth was continuous swallowing day and night. I was very down, and depressed. I have been back to the Dr and he is slowly putting me back on. I could not stand the side effects after coming off it.
I was taking 1 10 mg in morning and at night also and had to stop as I was having many of the same side effects except add horrible nightmares in there. I'm talking very vivid , woke up shaking so bad from these couldn't get back to sleep nightmares. They helped migraines but I would rather take meds to alleviate the migraine than have all those side effects. I also found out I had hypothyroidism about 2 weeks in and had to start on levothyroxine and wasn't wanting to start 2 meds at same time. Good luck I will be talking to my doc about anot her prevention med til then the propanol ol is out for me.
Is it normal to have slight palpitations when reducing dose of propranolol from 80mg to 40mg daily and will this subside
I weened myself from 60mg to 20mg then cut it in half for two weeks then stopped taking Propranolol. I had only been taking it for a month. Now I'm having worse migraines and when I stand up I can feel the blood rushing to my head and my BP has spike to the 150,s. I'm going to start doing cardio. I'm just worried this blood rushing to my head every time when I stand up is going to have some kind of negative effect on my health. Any ideas?
Hi I've had exactly the same,I've been on propranolol for 8 wks,it's made me more anxious,I wake up with rapid heartbeat.even went to get my eyes tested as everything is so blurred on these tablets.doctor gave them to me for severe panic attacks which it's helped slightly but the side effects arnt worth it.ive also lost half my hair and gained weight even tho I train 5 days a wk.going to try and wean myself off and try cbt
Hi all, my ENT Dr put me on propranolol 40mg twice a day he thinks, I may have anxiety or panic attacks. Start taking them for last three days, I am telling guys they are awful and harm to the body, they reduced my heart very low and had more symptoms. Still gets hot and cold, numbness and tingling in my body and becomes very weak.
I have stopped taking them to day, I felt like am having heart attack, right now. Feel dizzy so didn't help me at all, I am going to see my GP tomorrow to let them know. I will see my ENT in a week time, and I am going to tell him it didn't help at all. Up to now Dr still didn't diagnosed me with anything as yet all blood test and scans and MRI all good, so it confuses them what is wrong with me, I suffers from dizziness and very weak and feel confused.I have to accept what I have and get on with it. I am off work for the last 4 weeks, but I think I am going back by next week and try to live my life, I am the only person who can help my self and be supportive as no one can understand the illness I have.
Re: Daisy (# 9)
You’re the First person to mention dizziness. I’ve been on propanolol for over a year now, and I’m trying to come off it. I’m trying to taper by taking only one every other day as opposed to one per day large dose in this morning I’m extremely dizzy.
I just recently completely stopped taking Propranolol and for years and years I tried to stop, but couldn't because I would feel too much anxiety without it. I found that ever since I started doing a daily yoga practice, it has practically healed my anxiety and I no longer require any medication whatsoever. I started doing yoga every single day 39 days ago and it has changed my life. I do it at home with the help of "Yoga with Adriene" on Youtube. She has a few different 30 day challenges and it is the best thing I have ever done for my chronic anxiety and obviously the side effects for my body have been amazing! If anyone is struggling to get healthy mentally and physically, PLEASE TRY YOGA!!!
