Coming Off Propranolol (Page 4) (Top voted first)
Updatedi have stopped taking propranolol 80mg 3days ago and would like to know if there is any side effects coming off them
Last posted on here about 9 months ago with all the usual symptoms including ED (which this site will probably change to "libido" - when can we be allowed to grow up? It is what it is!). Now I am totally off Inderal and all the better for it. The last 5mg per day - I was cutting a 10mg in half - was by far the hardest part to cut. It's like the body screams for just a sign that there is at least some Inderal there. You just have to get through that and the rewards are there. BUT I was taking Inderal as a migraine preventive - not for blood pressure - and I cut it down under my doctor's guidance. Yes there were palpitations and some irritability and some very weird dreams but that's all gone now. However, I would be interested to hear whether any people who are clear of the stuff have had any other health issues since stopping. I now get dry eye syndrome (which oddly is a possible symptom of taking Inderal) and get dehydrated overnight with sometimes a sever headache on waking up which goes once I have had enough fluid. But I still won't be going back to the beta blockers.
I was taking the same as you, i just stopped taking it and was fine after the first week. Ive been off it nearly a year now and feel no different yay
I was prescribed this for chronic anxiety attacks and high generalized anxiety. For panic and stressful situations it is a miracle drug - I found myself starting to panic briefly, in a claustrophobic environment (large children's play structure with big tubes). The propranolol *blocked* the adrenaline dump - heart rate remained below 80. Miracle. Problem: complete exercise intolerance for me if I work out within 4 - 6 hours of dose (was NOT on XR but regular). I experimented with this to make sure I was not having anxiety-related issues - when I take the drug I can't exercise, when I skip a dose or two I can exercise again with NO breathing issues. Note: I am also on CPAP and was a 20 year smoker who quit 10 years ago. CPAP can cause mucous for me. A year ago I could life weights vigorously without issue so I was sure that my physical conditioning didn't deteriorate that quickly. If you are having exercise intolerance I would see your doctor ASAP to find out if it's the drug or another condition exacerbating by the drug or something unrelated to the drug, especially if heart problems was the reason for the original prescription. Also, with tapering, I use a "split the tablet in half" approach and go down 50% of the previous dose at a time. HOWEVER, the duration you stay on each successive step-down dose should NOT decrease. Do 2 or 3 weeks at each dose step. It's counter-intuitive but with some drugs (like SSRI antidepressants) you need LONGER step down periods with successively smaller dosages. Example: the body can "miss" 5mg of drug going from 10 down to 5mg where it didn't miss 40mg when going down from 80mg. I am not sure why this is, but withdrawal can be just as significant at lower taper dosages. Do not mess around. Stick to a taper schedule to avoid feeling sick or worse, bringing on heart-related issues. Good Luck. I am not a doctor. Always discuss medication intolerance, new symptoms, discontinuation and tapering with your doctor. Second opinions may be warranted if you have serious heart issues. As for me, I plan to use propranolol for travel/work anxiety on an as-needed basis but I will *not* work out or do strenuous activity for min. 48 hours after my last dose.
Yes, I having the same problems on Propanolel. Low dose of 40mg, 2x day. Sweating, excessive sleepiness, poor concentration, vivid dreams, nightmares, no energy, feeling faint, weight gain of 40 pounds! I am now weaning off due to the side effects.
This is an adverse reaction to the beta blocker I know because I had to dig to find it. Get off of them ASAP....
please begin to research magnesium deficiency for all of these posts - you may find some eye opening and helpful information. Good luck to all of you
That's what i am on I felt worse on them always crying and feeling depressed and hungry they've put me loads of wait on I am weaning my self off them now and I feel much better now
Since I started propranolol is was great, two months down the line I feel pins and needles in hands and feet, skin flushed in these areas too (occasionally),pressure in nose, dry eyes, numbness in tip of tongue, sparatic itching, light headed, and feels like a rubber band on my forehead when it's at its peak. So annoying waiting on Doctor to call and let me know to stop or not. I tried weening myself off only from 10mg and I already started shaking at the end of the day and my heart beated a little harder, so I gave in and took 5mg and I was okay. I take this for anxiety, I do not have blood pressure problems. I believe this pill your body does depend on although it's not addicting.
Hi Neil.
This is common practice now. I came off my steroids using this same method. Another friend is coming of a pain relief medication using this same approach. I can see the logic behind it ( one day on one off) This way you do not really get the time to feel the lowering of the meds too badly. I would say that It is perfectly safe from my own personal experience. Like all things though Neil. If you do not feel happy with this. Get some more information first. There are plenty of places too look. Hopefully also. If the doc recommended this method. I would hope it is safe. Stay safe Neil and good luck with the meds. It is the best thing I ever did coming off them. Others would not agree I know but we are all very different with medications.
I'm on 80mg slow release. Just had the weekend without tablets as Dr didn't fill out my prescription in time. Never have I felt so bad. Felt like I was coming down with flu or something. I'm on them for anxiety. Was told as it's a beta blocker it would slow heart rate and help with anxiety symptoms. Now I have to say it has helped plus keeps tremors at bay . I have functional Neurological Disorder and I have tremors as part of it. I have noticed more headaches with it, but I'd rather put up with them than my anxiety and tremors. I'm also on 40 mg Citalopram for depression and 300mg x3 daily Gabapentin for pain. I'm also on metformin 500mg x2 daily for diabetes. I have always had sleep issues and the vivid dreams I've had whilst on them have been quite entertaining tbh. But I do see the drawbacks. I was actually getting quite scared at how ill I felt the past couple days. I used to be on diazepam as well but Dr told me to stop taking them but keep hold of any remaining tablets just in case I needed them. Took a couple last night and it seemed to start relieving symptoms thankfully. I am starting to wonder if there is anything else they can give me after reading comments here. It wasn't until I remembered my last visit to the Dr and they said if I have issues with coming off diazepam (was to help with tremors too) they'll increase Propranolol. Think that would now be a no with recent experience. Debating now whether to cut down on it or not. Why don't they tell you how bad it can be if you miss doses or don't follow a weaning off process?
I was taking 120mg a day and so I tapered off really slowly the second time around. ( my dr demanded I go back on propranolol back then and so after finally weaning myself off started the curse all over again. I took it every other day for two weeks then the third week every third day and then every fourth the next two weeks and so on. Don't freak out if u need more time cuZ that's very common but you haven't taken yours for very long so you won't need much effort before your good to go
I have been on 80mg/once a day for 6 mths for migraines. I have never had a weight problem untilI started propranolol. I workout 5 times a week and maintain a low carb 1200 calorie a day diet. I have gained close to 20 lbs and there is nothing I can do to lose it. My dr tried to tell me the the propranolol is not the issue, but I know my own body and I've never had weight gain in my belly or neck until I started propranolol. She had me try to wean myself off twice but I couldn't handle the chest heaviness, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath. I decided to see a cardiologist. He had me alternate 80/mg 1day and 40/mg the next day for a week. The first 2 days were tough but I made it through. Now I am starting 40mg everyday for a week. Once I'm okay with that we will alternate 40mg one day& 20 mg for a weekand so on...Hoping it works!!!! I just want to be off this and lose this weight!!! I'll take a migraine over this!!! Did it take anyone a while to lose the weight once they were finally off it????
I'm now on day 10 since stopping propranolol. I have been getting headaches daily and feeling a little racy and anxious. Sometimes I feel a little tightness in my chest. My moods and mood thoughts are a little worrying too. I have made an appointment with doctor for next week and am sure I'll get a telling off for stopping abruptly, but just want to get my BP checked etc to make sure all OK. I'm determined not to go back on propranolol unless my migraines come back. I'm hoping the symptoms will soon settle down but not sure how long it takes. I will keep you posted on symptoms etc. which may be helpful for anyone coming off propranolol.
Does this drug affect anyones libido?
It has been a month since I started weening myself off 80mg of Propranolol. I am finally down to 5 mg/day and hope to be totally off it by next week. I had a very hard time going off this medication. My headaches were horrible but the chest palpitations have been the worst! I would feel like I was having an anxiety attack...but have never had anxiety...or so I thought..before taking Propanalol. The best part so far has been sleeping better through the night. On the medication I had very disturbed sleep and the dreams were insane. I also have so much more energy than I did! My migraines & high blood pressure are back so my Dr is waiting until I am totally off the med to see what we need to do about the BP.
I have been on 80mg for ten years for heart issues which I am now told I do not have! So I've stopped em abrptly. Having all symptoms as listed by folks here but determined to stay off em. I've gained weight too and have ] very small appetite. I asked six times to be reviewed before doc did - or I could have come off em years ago!
I bee taking proposals for a few months.I had side affects from it I felt like I was closed in and had panick attack.I called my doctor told me to reduce to 1tablet a day I did that and now I feel terrible. My finger triangles bad headache heart racing but not real it's a terrible feeling
I still wake every morning with a headache, but it trends to go away with the propranolol. Everything else has changed though. No motivation to do things, no libido, constipated, gained weight, tired vision, cold at night, and can't sleep. I also want up stop these pills, I've only been taking them for 3 Weeks, but see too many side effects to continue. My Dr wants me to continue longer, but I'm going to quit. I have to.
Hiya ive been taking 10mg 2a day for 3 years for panic attacks i then reduced myself down to 1a day. Ive gained 2stone since i started these meds. So i have stopped them. Do you loose the weight when you stop??
