Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 33) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

I recently went off Metroprolo after being on it for 13+ years.I had many issues with weaning process;urgent care&holter monitor.I am on 2 new BP meds and BP is under control;heart rate is still high.I had back pain and just started ear acupuncture and biofeedback.I also started wearing a pain patch and will try a formulated cream for OA.I will pick up scrip tomorrow for muscle relaxant to be taken up to 3 times a day. Also trying I Rest Yoga for anxiety and stress;should help heart rate&depression as well.Good luck to everyone trying to wean off Metroprolo;its a terrible drug for so many of your body's systems.

Hi.. tracy
Yeah I think it did the same to me. I'm going on 3 weeks now. My body feels much healthier but my mind doesn't feel the same. Nothing actually feels the same I think in a way I'm depressed and have anxiety and depersonalization... I just keep telling myself that my mind is playing tricks on me. My depersonalization last all day and night. I'm thinking of seeing a professional. I'm just scared that they will think I'm crazy. Is this a common thing ?

Britni, please go to the doctor or ER ASAP. I just went through the same thing two weeks ago and almost had a heart attack. My doctor weaned me off metoprolol way too quick and I became very I'll.
Just my two cents...I would go to the ER. Keep us posted.

Hi everyone. ... well I'm finally of my heart monitor after two weeks. My doctor said they found that I have s-v-t where my hearts electronic sigals are messed up. I was just wondering if the meteprolol has caused this because while weening off or anytime with taking these pills my heart would beat fast also... does anyone have any experience with is? All and all my blood pressure is fine but the anxeity is crazy I didn't now anxeity can cause physical pain with it or that's what my doctor says because every unusaul pinch or pain I feel really scared... I finally called a therapist to talk to and see him next week does anyone also no anything about all this cause I've never went through anything like this .... any help would be very helpful. ...

God bless to all...
And hope everyone is getting better.

I've been on it a little over a week. 25 mg 2 times daily for afib. A couple days ago started feeling a tightness in my chest. Cardiologist said cut dose in half. I did. ....and planing continuing to do so till I. Am off this! I feel worse now between the tightened chest and the dizziness than before with the Afib!!!

I am #165 above and have finally begun to feel more like myself. Getting off this drug was at least as bad as when I started. Maybe it was easier because I wasn't on it for too long, but I'm glad it's over. Fight thru all the awful symptoms to get off & eventually it will get better & you will feel more like yourself.

To #157 bb : your post got my attention about the ear, ringing, first my ached for one day, since then my research shows that it could be from an inner ear problem, nothing will cure it except two months of waiting. It will cease. I had vertigo, room never stopped spinning, sick to stomach. I also have stopped Metoprolol ,been on it 14 yrs, afib,bp was crazy on it,better in 5 days off. I put ear drops in,feels better,no moving head side to side fast, look straight ahead, try to use texting less. Tryl this,Dr.won't help, they just write script.

I was put on metoprolol tart 25mg 2x day due to a sustained sinus tachy event. I did this for 3wks, then dropped down to 12.5mg 2x day for 3 wks, then 12.5mg 1x a day in the evening, then 12.5mg every other day. Each reduction of dosage was because I complained I was so ill from the side effects, it was debilitating.

When I moved to taking half pill 1x a day, my issues with sob got worse (would wake up with it). Racing heart and sob when I lay down or get up or if I try to sleep on my left or right side. Also so many unsettling feelings in with my heart and chest at the get go, but did get better alot each day.

When I moved to half pill every other day, SOB significantly worse on the night and following day after taking the dose.

Today is day 4 of not taking the meds anymore. SOB has improved. My ability to sleep in different positions getting better. No sustained sinus tachy.

I'm finding comfort in knowing others experience similar issues with this med. My regret is I wish I advocated sooner getting me off or dosage adjusted lower quicker or is there something more gentler I could have been on.

I expect more months of rehab from being and getting off this drug.

Yes.very terrible side effects .l took for about two months and couldn't tolerate the weakness, headaches, fatigue, unsteady gait when walking, activity intolerance ,chest pain and discomfort. I have been off metoprolol for about a month now and still haven't been my normal self.

Annie
Please do call a pharmacy or the doctor. I take Metoprolol and from what I understand, you have to wean off.

I TOOK FOR ABOUT A MONTH! My Dr. had my stop "COLD TURKEY" totally after bad reaction with other med. ITS TAKEN ABOUT A MONTH TO GET OVERIT!!! I still feel like im not right in the head. Anxiety, vision focusing, chest pains, palpitations, dizzy, muscle spasms all over. Some days are worse than others. When I think I'm getting better, then another bad day comes. I CANNOT WAIT TO BE BACK NORMAL. I hope this is not a permanent problem. Anxiety has never been a problem for me before. I'm a veteran that used to fire weapons and all that good stuff. Now there are times I cant handle everyday situations. I had to get up and leave the room from WATCHING A MOVIE! I'm even thinking of smoking cannabis to help calm myself, or just sleep a good nights sleep. Alcohol seems to make me feel worse, so cant do that either. I feel sorry for everyone here. We all have the same problem. I'm on week 3 now. Better than week one, but got a ways to go...

Im taking metoprolol for 3 weeks and never thought the withdrawal effects would be this bad. Before taking metoprolol i was on bisoprolol for one week but i couldnt tolerate the side effect so Dr switch me to metoprolol. Since taking this meds my life not normal anymore. My BP is normal b4 taking this meds. Im on this med to control my heart rate. After met doctor last 2 weeks, she told me to stop metoprolol since my ECG seems ok. She prescribed me another beta blocker which is propranolol but only to be taken when needed. I have bad experiences with beta blocker before so i limit myself from taking propranolol. (already take it 2 times due to palp n rapid heart rate that cause me panic). Now after 2 weeks off metoprolol, i stillhave the side effects that really affects my life n work. I hope the effects will gone soon and i can feel normal back..

Ray, that is saying it like it is. I was on Metopralol for 4 years. Been off now for over a year. I have never felt the same or myself sense. I have had all kinds of medical problems encluding blood clots on my lungs. That stuff is poison. Just doesn't kill you quick but makes you suffer all kinds of withdrawals. I am afraid to get off any medication for fear it has a withdrawal.I sure don't want anything else like I went through with that. I couldn't take it.

I have those problems if I miss a pill. Weirdness is what lets me know I've forgotten to take it. The doctor prescribed it for me because my heart beat was irregular (not lower AB thing, but an upper chamber). I believe it was originally designed for high blood pressure, right? Then they figured out it helps with some heart issues?

Ray, you are so right, easy to write, but not as much knowledge as you would think they would have. My older doctor who retired, said that any drug taken for a prolonged period of time, should never be stopped cold turkey, too hard on the body. I guess I should check it out and see what info there is on Metoprolol/Toprol, how many years it's been available, just all the skinny. Will my skin turn purple and will I grow horns after 10 or 15 years of use LOL? I'm sort of curious, because any drug that can make me feel this weird when I forget a pill, has to have some long term effect, don't you think?
