Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 32) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
I posted earlier but it's not showing up?? Anyway Ruby, sounds like you've been through a lot. I will pray that you feel better soon!!
I stopped Metropolol 25 mg twice a day for three days and am having all the side effects mentioned above. I started taking it again yesterday so I have had three doses. Does anyone know how long it will take for the withdrawal side effects to go away?
Suzanne, I only took 25 mg for a month. Do you think it's necessary to wean myself off after that short time? Maybe it is, last night was another bad night for me.
I've been reading these for the last few weeks. I had taken 25mg once a day for 53 days when I decided that I didn't want to deal with the side effects. I cut back to 12.5mg per day for about a week and then went off completely.
I have had some terrible days. According to a Dr. friend of mine the meds remain in your system for about six days then you deal with the "bounce back"effect. I now normally have a couple of good days and then have a bad to terrible day. Mine started last night about ten and has run all night and all day. My HR fluctuates between 100-165 and it wears me out.
Don't understand why I was even prescribed this med as my normal resting HR was 55 before and was "Pre Hypertension". On this med my HR went to high 40's to low 50's.....I hope everyone prevails but I expect I will have deal with these withdrawal symptoms for some time.
It also induces lupus, and because its a beta blocker vitiligo. FDA needs to ban this poison.
Did they ever find out what was causing your issues in the first place? I'm having similar problems, started from nowhere, seen a million Dr's and they don't know where this came from. I'm also on Metoprolol and it makes me feel terrible.
Anyone know about how long it will take for the withdrawal symptoms to go away? (In general since everyone is different). I took metoprolol tart 25mg once a day for 3 weeks...hated the SEs. Dropped to 12.5mg once a day for about 10 days, then 6.25mg once a day for about 4 days. Then stopped. Its been 3 days so far and have experienced heart rates from 90-104 per min. Hoping it stops soon. Thanks!
Thanks Becky! I noticed at night my HR sometimes would drop to the high 80s, which is a lot closer to my original HR before taking metoprolol. A week seems doable. Hopefully that would be the case for me too. When you were coming off the medication, did you sometimes feel your heart beat when trying to sleep? That's one other thing I've noticed. Thanks again
I have been on metoprolol 25 mg twice a day for 3 years then lowered my dose to 12.5 twice a day for several months then quit cold turkey 4 days later I went into atrial fibrillation for 8 years needind cardizem to get out of it. They then put me back on it and I'm weaning off horrified to say the least I started this medication for anxiety now I have sinus arrhythmia and constant palpitations and all tests come back good has to be the beta blocker. I wouldn't suggest cold turkeying this from experience.
l've been on Metoprolol 25mg since Oct.12-2013 and am having depression and shortness of breath. There are so many side effects from meds that its hard to tell if its a side effect from the drug or just age related, but l know mine is from this medication. l am going to wean myself off this medication. Just waiting for my doctor to call me back so l can tell her.
Anne, I'm sorry you're having to experience the side effects of this nasty drug. Since I got off I started having chest pains, not excruciating but just a tightness. I don't know if it has anything to do with this drug or not. At first I thought it was anxiety. I'm making an appointment with a cardiologist.
I've been on 50 MG of Metoprolol for just over 9 years. Going on it I had no issues. I had A Fib and Mitral Valve Pro-laps. Last year I went into A Fib and would not come out. I was Cardioverted and went back into A Fib. I tried a few new arrhythmia drugs and was Cardioverted again only to go back into A Fib. At that point it was time for a cardiac ablation. After the ablation I went back into A Fib. Then I knew it was time to get my valve repaired. While having open heart they performed a maze procedure which is an external ablation. A few days after the open heart I needed a pacemaker because my heart stopped. Went home for recovery to find out I was in Tacacardia. They upped my Metoprolol to 75 MG and I almost fainted while driving. I was put back to 50 MG and all was well. I needed another ablation which was successful. One year later, which was three weeks ago, I was bumped down to 25MG and that's when my problems. I've been dizzy, PVC's and very cloudy!!!! It's really beginning to scare me. I also have suffered from anxiety since my open heart and take a med for that. Thanks for letting me share my info. This is the first time I have posted my events and I really hope somebody can get some form of knowledge out of my rant.
Toni...I've set up a follow up appointment this Saturday with a NEW doctor, who is taking new patients. So, if I like her and her approach to getting me off the metoprolol correctly, I will sign up with her. (I am lucky with my insurance, in respect that I don't need a referral to go to any doctor...as long as they're on my list, I can go to whomever I want.)
Thank you also for the advice on getting back to the doctor...I had no idea how sick I actually was. The hospital told me it was very wise that I didn't wait another day. BP was very high, then low, heart rate very high, potassium and magnesium very low, dehydrated...I had no clue. I just knew I didn't feel well and really felt my Doctor was downplaying my symptoms.
I am having a lot of side effects and I think I'm going crazy
okay so ill start from the begining....
I went to the ER three months ago because while at work I started feeling light headed and dizzy then my heart started to pound and my BP went up sky high. The Doctors at the ER said i was dehydrated from all the drinking i did during the weekend. A few days after that i went to my doctors office and he gave me Metoprolo and Lorazepan. Metoprolol for my blood pressure since it was high at the ER and Lorazepam if I feel funny or my heart starts pumping out of my chest. The First night I took it.... in the morning I got up to use the restroom. I got so dizzy and fell off the toilet. Called my doctor and he said to take only half the pill so 25mg from 50mg. I took the 25mg for 2-3 weeks and felt like i was losing my mind made me nervous, scared, my feet would get very cold, the anxiety made me crazy, I felt dizzy and like I wasnt in my own body. I went to the ER maybe 3 time because of all that. I was also taking 1mg of lorazepam 3 times a day because i felt terrible from taking the BP med. For those 2-3 weeks i felt so sick and medicated out. I almost lost my mind. I kept calling and calling my doctor about the pill and he kept saying it was me and my body needs time to adjust and to keep taking the Lorazepam if i feel bad. Then I started to ween off after reading about the side effects. I did the half dose for a week then half of that and ect.... until I had to cut it with a razer blade. After everytime I halfed a dose same day my heart would start pounding to 130-160 bpm then my blood pressure would spike and i would panic and go to the ER. But slowly I would start feeling more alive everyday. At the ER they did blood test, EKG,Cat scans, chest x-rays, ultrasounds of my heart and I even did a stress test with my cardiologist which i got after my normal doctor gave up and said i need to see one. All test came back as i have a perfect heart. It drove me nuts knowing im feeling like im dieing and having all these test come back normal. But now I have been off all the pills for 6 days. im starting to feel more alive and less dizzy. I still feel anxious and nervous but i think its slowly going away. Today also my chest started feeling heavy and started feeling like i couldnt breath without really trying. So far only two days ago my heart started beating fast around 160bpm and my BP shot up to 200/110 but it only lasted 30sec and i didnt go to the ER so im hopeing that was the last time because of getting off the metoprolol. When that happens its so scary cause it comes out of no where and i feel like im dieing and going to pass out. oh.. also im 31 and have never been sick in my life like this..Im wondering what everyone thinks, what should i do, has anyone felt like this, and how long does these side effect last because if it aint the pills then something is wrong with me and im just so freaked out about all of this that im starting to get really depressed. i havent left the house to do anything but the doctors and ER in three months just dont know what to do...
thanks and much aloha's
Hi...rick
No I have never had anxiety before and I'm not on any bp medications. This all just started at once. My bp now is around110-125/77-83 and 60-80p. But when I was on metoprolol it was always higher. Within a day or so after I stopped taking it evertthing went down. I'm just hopeing that I really was dehydrated the first time and my doctor jumped the gun and put me on the medications..that's pretty much where all my hope is right now. before all this my b lood pressure was pre-hyper but I have last 25pounds so I'm hoping I am normal now. Ive been searching everywhere for someone withthe same symptom s as me but everyones experience differs maybe because there are so many side effects. Is there anyone that has completely got off and feel 100 percent again?
I feel the same way Travis. Last week she gave me a double diuretic. HCTZ which I already take and Triamterene. Within 5 minutes of taking it I was so sick. Ruined my whole day, I couldn't do anything, especially drive. I can tell my Dr. is getting frustrated with me. She all but said the reason my blood pressure is high is because I stopped taking Metoprolol. I'm already on Lisinopril which gives me a dry cough and HCTZ. This has been the most frustrating thing in my life. I feel like I went from healthy to feeling like crap most of the time because of these drugs. You can't talk to most doctors about the side effects because they deny they exist. I'm just trying to do what I can by eliminating most sodium, sugar, caffeine etc. Sometimes my blood pressure is too high but I don't know what else I can do. It sucks.
Okay so day 8.
I'm kinda feeling a little better today. I still get those waves of feeling anxious, nervous, and kinda shakey. No pounding heart moments yet for 4 days. I feel like I'm just waiting for it to happen. But I'm starting to move around the house more so maybe its a sign I'm getting better my bp and bpm have been pretty stable and normal. I just want to be over with this already. I still don't have the feeling or interest to leave or drive anywhere since I'm scared to do anything but I guess I must build up some confidence in myself sooner or later. I think maybe ill try waiting an other week. I don't know if its that or I'm in some kind of depression....
My doctor just took me off Metoprolol and the second day I noticed my heart rate and blood pressure up. does this medication also give a side effect of back aches. Also today I had to take a half an ativan to relax my anxieties and a baclofen to help relax my muscles. Have any of you experience back pain after going off this drug
Hi Susan, I have had anxiety. I'll have to check out the meaning of depersonalization that Tracy mentioned. I'm almost scared to. My heart still races occasionally which could be caused from the anxiety. There are so many side effects of this drug that it's hard to know what is a side effect and what isn't. The bottoms of my feet hurt very bad after I've been sitting for awhile. Is it the joint pain that is a side effect or plantar faciitis that I suddenly developed around the same time I started this drug. Who knows.
