Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 113)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2240) Expand Referenced Message

I had a pretty good Tuesday until late in the evening when i found out my folks got tested positive for covid. I got anxious and had the same weird feeling just below the neck for a few minutes . Checked my heart rate it was normal but felt this thing which made me more anxious and got nightmares. I was this close to going to ER but i thought let it be enough of this bs already!

How was your day?

Yes. It’s a long story...... I was put on clonazepam for 30 days from a traumatic experience causing nightmares , I didn’t like the way it made me feel so my doctor told me to just stop taking it. That I hadn’t been on it long enough to cause a dependence. So I listened. Two days later my heart rate was up to 178 upon waking, severe panic attacks, resting heart rate was like 125. I was in the ER every day for like two weeks (I constantly felt like I was going to have a heart attack, I even passed out twice). I now realize I was in SEVERE benzo withdrawal. But no doctor (even ER doctors ) knew that’s what it was. Because I had only been on it for such a short amount of time. I finally got a cardiologist appointment and she put me on Metoprolol for the chest pain and tachycardia. After about 3 weeks the benzo withdrawal went away and the metoprolol was causing my blood pressure to be 80/40 and my heart rate dropped to high 30’s low 40’s. Which is too low for both. I’m not an athlete so 40’s is bad for me as far as heart rate goes. But when I stopped the metoprolol the chest pain, anxiety, and ridiculously high heart rate came surging back!

Juliya (# 2242) --

So just 3 weeks on metoprolol wreaked this havoc. What a horrible drug this is and after 3 weeks you tried to wean off 6 times? When i went to ER for first time i told them my heart rate went to 199 but that was just for a fraction of second i now wonder i was wrongly put on this drug( like you pointed out earlier) i had chest pains for two three days and high bp.

Even the heart rate now if it goes to 50s it scares me . Also, how long is the echocardiogram valid like how often frequently you should do it?

For an echo I think it’s every 6 months. Things don’t change on echos overnight.

Makes sense. Do you think heart beating fast when One wakes up from a nap/sleep could be from anxiety?

Re: RV (# 2247) Expand Referenced Message

It’s cortisol surges. Your nervous system regulates your hormones. It’s highest in the mornings and when you wake. I still get that every day!

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2250) Expand Referenced Message

You had that too ?? you are probably one of the few forum members who has every single symptom this medicine should be stopped . I got a doppler done in July wondering if i should visit an ER? What did you do? Did it stop finally?

Re: RV (# 2252) Expand Referenced Message

Yes, I even asked my sister if she could see hers through the top of her stomach and she said yes. I actually never looked again. I forgot about it. LOL. Let me check. I can see a few beats. My sister said she can see hers too. And she had a scan for her gallbladder too and all was normal. I think sometimes you can see it but it’s NOT an aortic aneurysm

I already knew my system was Uber sensitive as taking prednisone was a HELL no for me: but that damn beta blocker sent me for a LOOP

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2253) Expand Referenced Message

Haha thats sweet of you to check it again and its reassuring as well. This thing has scared me and now i am wondering what should i do now.

What baffles me is if beta blockers are so bad why are the majority unaffected and its just selected few of us who have to rely on such forums for some first hand info

Re: RV (# 2254) Expand Referenced Message

I think we’re the ones who have sensitive systems and are unfortunately plagued by the side effects to our CNS. I do think we will heal completely, it will just take time.

Only you can make that call, but I think you’re fine. But if you need reassurance, I totally get it. The ER will be able to give it to you.

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2255) Expand Referenced Message

Its funny that we never noticed so minutely the physical/emotional sensations and now we are so fickle minded.
They did perform a doppler around the abdomen for kidney, liver, intestine in July which was normal and 2d echo as well. Thats why i asked Juliya the other day how often or how long are these tests valid for . Right now not thinking about this much since parents got covid. Hope you are doing good .

Re: RV (# 2256) Expand Referenced Message

Hope you guys had a merry Christmas!

Oh no, are your parents doing ok so far? I hope their symptoms are mild.

I had been doing well all week and today I woke up with some hefty PVCs and I’m trying not to freak out. I really don’t want another ER visit. They are just hefty today and I have some shooting pains which of course freaks me out like heart attack. Apple Watch says all sinus rhythm. I’m not having tachycardia just the PVCs. Why can’t this all just bloody GO AWAY

How are you feeling juliya?

I’m on the struggle bus today. The palps have not let up all day and I’m having some shooting pains and hair really funky sensations. I’m really trying not to freak out & I can’t decide if a 1/4 channel blocker is needed :( this really sucks. I don’t want to have to go to ER for validation ::: cry face emoji :::
