Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 106)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Not taking supplements also makes sense but after reading and researching i started taking magnesium glycinate since i read it helps with palps and anxiety i dont know how helpful it is i take 50% of RDA which comes around 200mg. I also bought CoQ10 but didnt take a single pill. Sugar intake is around 1 tsp i read that metoprolol increases triglycerides and hba1c dont know how true is that. I try to walk around as much as i can gradually building up. Do you have bp spikes?
Re: RV (# 2101)
Yup. If you do not come off of Metoprolol correctly it shocks the nervous system and causes a dysfunction in your autonomic nervous system. So high heart rates, fluctuations in blood pressure, fluctuations in bowel movements and digestion, breathing, mood. Everything the the autonomic nervous system controls is now out of wack until it heals.
Re: Juliya (# 2100)
Yes, it was a calcium channel blocker. Only 5mg and no prescription to go home on. Just the one time deal. I’m currently waiting for my cardio to call me back after he’s seen my reports. His nurse had me transmit all implant recordings manually so they could see everything that went on last night.
I did mention the PVCs and then asked if that was normal. She has a strong accent so it was hard to understand but i thought her say “not normal” I thought PVCs generally were “harmless” I don’t think I’m having the 20,000 a day that says that when it becomes a problem but I guess we’ll see what the cardio says this afternoon.
Re: Juliya (# 2102)
I weaned off in 8 weeks from 100 to 75 to 50 to 25. I don’t know whats the correct way but i thought taking 25 every alternate day or halving it would make me more anxious. Did you keep a daily log of all your withdrawal symptoms? I always wonder how did people cope without internet and these forums since metoprolol has been around from sometime.
Re: Juliya (# 2102)
Also since you have some medical background i was meaning to ask you how accurate are those heart rate apps that use the led to detect the heart rate? I think they use ppg technique to monitor the heart rate!
RV (# 2103) --
Yeah you came off way too fast. You shouldn’t have went down to the next dose until your body told you it was okay. Also you should have went to at the very least 12.5 until your body said okay. Then 12.5 every other day. And I’m not sure about the Fitbit ekg and heart rate. But I know the Apple iwatch is accurate within 4bpm so it’s fairly accurate. I just bought the iwatch 6 so I can run my ekg and monitor my oxygen level as well. I know next year they are releasing the iwatch 7 series which has just been FDA approved for blood pressure monitor as well. So I’m excited about that.
Juliya (# 2105) --
Yes but now i am off metoprolol since 22 days wouldn't make sense to go back now the other doctor said 25 is a small dose and weaned me off. Ohh apple watch is fairly accurate but i was wondering about these apps on iPhone where you put a finger on the camera and led flash .
RV (# 2106) --
I don’t think those are very accurate. Iwatch was designed for the sensors to specifically look for those things as indicators. Your phone wasn’t. You can try it out though. You can measure it against your heart rate on your blood pressure monitor and see how accurate it is for you.

Check out my reply down below. It barely got approve ::eye roll::
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2103)
For some reason, I don’t get notifications of your replies. It’s like I get one notification once there is like 3 or 4 replies already. What is going on with this forum. PVCs are generally harmless. And are pretty normal if they happen at rest. They are very concerning though if they happen during or right after exercise. I think you’ll be fine mama. I can’t say you won’t have any rebound tachycardia from the calcium channel blocker, but it’s not going to effect the progress you’ve made off the metoprolol. It will depend on your body’s sensitivity to medications.
Re: Juliya (# 2108)
Yes thats what i wondered i checked my resting heart it was 55 and 30 seconds later it was showing 36 bpm and i checked in oximeter it was in 60s. I have developed this constant urge to check heart rate constantly don’t know whats going on in my mind! Sometimes i feel i’ll die from fast heart rate sometimes i feel i’ll die from slow heart rate! There is no inbetween
Re: RV (# 2111)
That’s your body adjusting to the chemical imbalance of glutamate and gaba. It’s trying to reach homeostasis so the chemicals will fluctuate until they find a normal balance. If you don’t mind my asking we’re you put on Metoprolol for a high heart rate or for blood pressure? And how low did the 100mg take your heart rate down?
Re: Juliya (# 2112)
Hey so i was a bit overweight but a regular gym goer and would 3-4 miles daily but that obviously stopped after covid. In july my uncle got diagnosed with AML (blood cancer) and i was under tremendous stress could barely sleep and for a day or two i felt random chest pain which never happened to me so i panicked heart rate spiked to 120 and went to ER ecg and troponin levels were checked everything was normal except my blood pressure which shot up to 170/100 so as a precautionary measure they asked me to stay for a day till they could rule out other causes which could be secondary hypertension. So i underwent 2d echo test , renal doppler , 24 hour urine VMA, another ecg to rule out other things. They monitored my blood pressure there which was 150 90 during day and 130 80 when i was sleeping so they put on metoprolol 50 twice a day. After that i consulted a cardiologist through zoom and he added an ACE inhibitor because my blood pressure was 140 90 after taking that for a month i felt uncomfortable and he suggested to try calcium channel blocker 5mg a day after starting this my blood pressure reading were 115/75 and i also lost 5% body weight through walking and stopped eating sugar. Then from mid September onwards started weaning off metoprolol because it made me lethargic , affected my breathing , made me anxious and i finally stopped on 16th November gradually decreasing 25mg after every 2 weeks. Blood pressure has remained constant around 115-125 and 75-85 its just that anxiety , palpitations , sometimes fast heart rate , breathing issues that's bothering me. But what i am going through is hell. Also lost almost 10% bodyweight through diet, workouts and walking.
Re: RV (# 2111)
I’m the same way but with HR & ecg. I’m constantly taking both to make sure I’m in sinus rhythm and even more so now that I’m having these ectopic beats or whatever that just started. Those really freak me out!
My cardio did call and it looks like I have SVT so will be talking about a catheter ablation in January. Hopefully that fixes all this mess and I can go about living life normal without checking my pulse and my ecg 24/7 thinking I’m about to have a heart attack or flat line. This stuff is NO joke.
Julia do you think taking a teeny dose of channel blocker would be fine on the days the ectopic beats are miserable would be fine, or would they cause an addiction/withdrawal
Re: RV (# 2113)
Oh that’s amazing! Good job on the weight loss! Beta blockers usually aren’t first in line for high blood pressure. That’s odd that was the first choice
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2114)
As long as your cardiologist says it’s fine I assume it would be. I am not a cardiologist. My degree is in polysomnography. I diagnose sleep disorders. What I know about this metoprolol has come from constant research on my own because I was curious about what was going on with my body.
Re: Juliya (# 2116)
Do you think channel blocker will incur the same withdrawal hell as beta blocker? I don’t plan on taking it regular just when the palpitations become too much to sleep through.
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2117)
Any medication you put into your body has the potential for withdrawal. It’s a chemical that your body adjusts to having in it. With sporadic use you will lessen the chances of your body adjusting to it presence and should avoid withdrawal. But also take into consideration your medication sensitivity.
Re: Juliya (# 2118)
Yeah I’m going to only use it if I had tachy like two nights ago where it wouldn’t go down. The rest I’m
just going to have to deal with until the ablation. And then hopefully my body can fully heal from
This ordeal and my HR back to normal
Re: Juliya (# 2118)
I remember the girl later down on this board saying she had the ablation and she felt so much better. I’m hoping this for me too. My cousin had then same thing and had the ablation and she is 100% fixed. I’m wondering if this is genetic
