Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 107)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Juliya (# 2115) -

I know but i think at the time i complained of a slightly higher heart rate maybe it was due to anxiety or panic. And weirdly apple watch showed it went too 199 bpm for just a second and came back down dont know how it works.

I think the Apple Watch misfires sometimes like
That. If it goes back down within a split second, I don’t think you were really at that heart rate. The watch was just adjusting. Now if it stayed at 199 for a couple minutes I’d say that, that was true probably. But the split changes, no.

Yes yes it does like it would go to 180 for 5 seconds and then back to 90 bpm and it stayed around 80-100 but it scared the hell out of me. How did your doctor think its SVT? Your holter monitor results were good right? Are your PVCs better now?

Re: RV (# 2124) Expand Referenced Message

Ugh all this is so frustrating! I’ve called the cardio 3 xs this week and I’m sure they are like lady! But this stresses me out so much and I’m sure the stress doesn’t help.

My short holters ( I did one for a week and one for a month) back in April/may all come out fine just showing the sinus tachycardia but I was still having all these spurts like you are where they would go up and down and then I was weaning off beta blocker so that was making it all worse. We agreed to do the implant so he could monitor longer to really figure out what was going on with the HR spikes. He said Arrhythmias can take a while to show on a monitor if it’s not happening a lot and lots of time it never gets caught on a short holster unless you’re to the point of it happening ALOT. Which my cousin had had her symptoms for 4 years before she got it checked out and then at that point her holster showed it right away.

I guess with the stress of finding out that our friend had Covid this last week, the palpitations or whatever they are started this week and then I had that episode of the high HR on Sunday that I went to the ER for, my implant monitor I guess finally showed that it was SVT. He said he would talk about it when we have our follow up in Jan and talk about the procedure. But I’ve called back 3xs this week just to make sure it’s nothing because now that the palpitations are here, they won’t go away and it’s stressing me out. It feels so gross and like I’m skipping a beat ( even though I’m not) it happens quite frequently since it started and now I’m constantly running ecgs to make sure all is sinus rhythm which it always is. I’m not a sit and wait person so this is brutal. The nurse had informed me every time I’ve called that he said it’s not a major arrhythmia, I’ll be fine, please stop stressing, and they will be monitoring me daily so not to stress until our appt. but that’s easier said than done when you feel like your heart is constantly “skipping beats”

Oh boy this is so sad. And the worst part is our anxiety is always through the roof its like my mind needs a new symptom everyday to think about today it is tingling feeling in my right feet , breathing is always a constant. I hope you don't have any arrhythmia and i know this is futile but try to watch some comedy shows like office , Seinfeld let your body heal

Re: RV (# 2126) Expand Referenced Message

I know I really need to not stress and think worst case scenario over every symptom I have. I think the stress makes everything worse.

Even if I do have SVT, I know the ablation is about a 95% success rate and I just want to feel normal again. I don’t have AFib or the other serious arrhythmias, those have been ruled out but I just want to be on my way back to normal

I’m wondering if this is genetic due to my cousin having the exact same thing. She had her ablation about 4 years ago and has never had an episode again. She’s 100% cured.

I wish we could share pictures on here so I could show you & Julia what I feel and how it shows up on the ECG.

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2127) Expand Referenced Message

Should practice before i preach but really everyday is like assuming the worst case scenario for me. This medicine makes you mentally drained and weak i think.

Afib and Vfib are the only dangerous arrhythmias i am aware of. And most of the irregular rhythms are caused due to coronqry artery disease which is pretty difficult to have at late 30s if i am not wrong thats how old you are. By the way did you have any weird breathing side effects?

Re: RV (# 2128) Expand Referenced Message

Yes, afib and vfib have Been ruled out and both the ER doctor and cardio who is an electrophysiologist specialist said it’s not CAD but an electrical issue. Extra cells that are causing an extra electrical pathway which causes the SVT. Not sure which SVT I have yet as the nurse said he didn’t give details but that’s why the ablation is usually successful because they go in and burn off the extra cells that’s causing the electrical issue.

Yes! I felt like I couldn’t get a good breathe in! And actually I’ve been feeling like that today too and I’m wondering if it’s from the calcium channel blocker I took and not taking anymore. I feel like my chest is kinda tight and has that same feeling. The knot thing that gives me comfort is that I know my oxygen is at 99%

I felt like I got an adrenaline rush tonight and Over all funky feeling which of course made me freak out like I was having a heart attack... but I’m wondering if that’s from the channel blocker I was given on Monday :( I just tried to breathe through it and remember I’m ok! It’s nothing serious. This really SUCKS guys

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2129) Expand Referenced Message

Thats great to hear also i read that stress can contribute to irregular heart rhythm as well but i think we continue to live in stress 24*7 even after stopping metoprolol.

I had taken calcium channel blocker 2.5mg twice a day for 15 days and i dont think it will cause you any withdrawal effect i stopped it abruptly but i was still on metoprolol at the time.

Re: RV (# 2132) Expand Referenced Message

I definitely had dizziness!!! Right when I was weaning M I had to go to the ER because I was so dizzy it was scary. Then I had residual dizziness here and there for some time.

I wonder what these adrenaline rushes are. Body still detoxing the last of the nasty beta blocker?

Re: RV (# 2132) Expand Referenced Message

I did and still do get dizziness. The body is reaching homeostasis. It’s trying to balance the chemical chemistry in the brain. Metoprolol increases the gaba and blocks adrenaline so the receptors become sensitive to the adrenal activity that comes flooding in when you stop beta blockers. It’s just trying to readjust. Waves and windows. Remember that. You will get waves of high glutamic activity (anxiety, high heart rate, dizziness, fatigue, weird breathing, weight loss, ect). And windows of normalcy where gaba increases and balances back to normal for a bit. It takes 6 to 12 months for the balance to adjust.

Re: Juliya (# 2134) Expand Referenced Message

I wonder if that’s what I was feeling last night. Waves. It felt like the old adrenaline rushes and weird feelings, lightheaded etc. I hate all those rushes of feelings. Its so hard not to stress out over it.

I’m just feeling so funky today. Dizzy, waves of the adrenaline... do you think that’s a wave from the beta blocker? Or a reaction from the channel blocker on Monday and not taking anymore? I hate this feeling. I’m so just ready to feel normal.

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2133) Expand Referenced Message

Hahaha wow none of the doctors are ready to acknowledge these withdrawal symptoms. Palpitations have occurred less frequently now but anxiety is through the roof , weird breathing issues , dizziness, assuming the worst case scenario all the time, counting the days till i see my cardiologist and each day as it gets closer i am getting anxious i dont know when this will end but this is torturous.

By the way what are those adrenaline rushes that every body talks about? Are you feeling better today?

Re: Juliya (# 2134) Expand Referenced Message

I’ll do this one thing re-read your replies to my message it comforts me . Was checked by ER last Thursday and he said everything is fine but somehow i assume the worst case scenario which is SCA i don’t know its just overwhelming also a reason could be just 4 months ago i know someone who died due to sudden cardiac arrest who was 31 years old and it has scarred me i think. Sorry for bothering you so much and thank you for being kind enough to reply .

Re: RV (# 2137) Expand Referenced Message

Did the 31 year old have that run in their family? Did they say why she/he had SCA? That’s definitely not the norm and try not to stress and think about that.

Re: RV (# 2137) Expand Referenced Message

It’s not a problem. Please don’t ever feel like a bother. I’m glad I could help. It’s definitely very scary. I was at the ER multiple times before I did my research. Now I just tell myself it’s withdrawal and it will pass with some slow breathing and it calms down. It’s a VERY scary feeling.

It’s possible. Waves can last a few days up to a few weeks. It really depends.
