Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 108)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Re: RV (# 2137)
I just had a NP friend look at my Apple Watch readings which I thought were the PVCs and then she asked the dr on call who’s her friend and Both said they were nothing at not PVCS. And that I need to stop stressing and stop trying to interpret my own ecg and that my dr knows what he’s doing lolol that stressing will make the palpitations worse. They said it in a nice way but yikes, just shows how stress can be evil and make you self diagnose yourself for stuff that’s not even happening
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2138)
The worst part is i dont even know him personally i just heard from a friend about him but it still stresses me out because that friend who knew him said he had high blood pressure so thats what affecting me i dont have any other info.
How is your day going?
Re: Juliya (# 2139)
Thank you . I know it is kind of difficult to convince oneself that nothing is wrong and we need to give ourself some time. Need to remember waves and windows . Last week ER suggested i take medicines for anxiety or stay on a minimum dosage of metoprolol after going through this i said no.
Re: RV (# 2143)
It’s your call because it’s your life obviously but if I were you I’d just wait it out unless it gets dangerous (like blood pressure too high). There were times I had to reinstate metoprolol under doctors orders because of my heart and then had to try and get off again. Each time I tried to come off after that made the withdrawal worse. It’s called a kindling effect. Each time you reinstate you kindle those neurotransmitter receptors. If you do choose to go back on a low dose, stay on it. Learn from me. Don’t keep reinstating and stopping! I was bedridden for 6 months, could barely walk. My withdrawal was so bad from reinstating and stopping so many times under doctors orders. It’s probably going to take me around 5 years or so to heal. But I did it to myself. I was so desperate for relief I listened to the doctor and reinstated. Then it made my blood pressure drop too low again and I was told to stop it again. I dealt with a vicious cycle.
Re: Juliya (# 2140)
So last night was awful. The palpitations would just not quit. Ended up falling asleep at 5:30am finally after I took 1/4 of a channel blocker.
I was thinking was is possibly new that caused this sudden onset of palpitations. And when this started the only thing new was, the stress of friend having Covid which I’m not stressed over anymore and I started a diet of soy protein isolate. I started researching soy and it not great. Do you think the soy is causing my palpitations? I have been eating it 5 times a day. Here’s a few things I found:
“If you are not feeling like yourself, and have symptoms such as nausea, bloating, gastric disorders, unusual weight gain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or lack of energy, it's worth trying to eliminate soy from your diet for a period of time to see if it is contributing."
“For the past 2 days I had a chocolate soy milk with lunch and immediately got palpitations”
“Yes! I went vegan and my old PVC's came back. I knew soy has hormone-like qualities like estrogen, so it was highly suspect. Hormones affect heart rhythm so I tested this hypothesis. I eliminated soy in the diet and the PVC's went away. However, some things have soy lecithin which I never had a problem with. I have yet to isolate whether it is certain ways soy is processed or the natural soy bean itself that triggers the PVC's.”
Re: Juliya (# 2144)
So july was the time you finally quit the M or did you continue to reinstate it after July as well? I hope i don't have to end up to take that low dose. Right now the biggest three factors that affect me on daily basis are 1) cardiac anxiety 2) weird breathing 3) sometimes feeling weird around the chest. If these go away i’d be quite happier but sadly all these things will take time to go away!
When you say waves and windows do you mean waves could last for a few days as well or is it for a brief amount of time?
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2145)
I feel palpitations when i am laying or resting is it the same with you? I wonder is it because i am resting i become super sensitive since i am not doing anything and end up concentrating too much on my heart. When are you aware about palps?
Re: RV (# 2147)
Yes it’s when I’m laying down but last night was brutal :( but I’m starting to think it was the soy protein isolate I was eating 5 times a day. I didn’t eat any today and I’m not going to eat any tomorrow. We shall see
Re: RV (# 2147)
I’m definitely having rebound tach today from the 1/4 pill of channel blocker. Just walking around the house it’s 125 :( when is this ever going to stop. I guess when I get an ablation
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2148)
I tried to increase soy intake so that i could increase protein intake since i am a vegetarian too. It was on hard my digestive system made me feel , gassy i suggest you to not take it for a few days and see how it goes for you.
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2149)
Sorry guys, I had to take a day. I had a rough day yesterday with severe muscle pain, I could barely move. It hurt so bad it felt like my body was literally on fire. You can be sensitive to any substance at this time including food. So it may be the soy. I can’t take magnesium. It revs my heart up too bad and causes massive PVCs and high heart rate. So anything is possible. You can try to cut it out and see if it helps any.
Re: Juliya (# 2151)
Hey Juliya, hope you are doing good today did you get a chance to see a doctor? it has been rough couple of days for me as well mainly anxiety and i get a weird feeling around chest no pain , no tingling just feel weird. Today i was checking oximeter while resting heart rate went down to 48bpm for a second and then went back up to 60-65 bpm. Also i think i spoke a bit too early blood pressure shot up to 140/85 highest in a 25 days since i stopped taking metoprolol. I have rescheduled my appointment with cardiologist on Monday .
Re: Juliya (# 2151)
My bp monitor showed a heart sign is it something to be serious about? I read that when there is 25% variance it happens my bpm was 57 at the time
Re: RV (# 2152)
If you see that, I would wait a couple of minutes and take it again. If it’s still there you can speak to your cardiologist. It is possible it was just a faulty reading (could have been due to a number of reasons) if it just randomly happened once.
Juliya (# 2153) --
It happened only once i took it again 5 mins later it didnt show any sign later but nevertheless my bp shot up from 123 to 145 as i got scared. Its 4 am right now in India and i cannot sleep. How was your day?
Re: Juliya (# 2151)
I’m so sorry you had a bad day yesterday! I wish all of us would get past this thing and feel NORMAL
Re: RV (# 2152)
What is a heart sign on BPM?
Re: Txcandy1 (# 2157)
Depends on which monitor you are using but you can google the omron blood pressure manual which is a pdf file and on page 9 they have this information about irregular heart rhythm alert where they will display a heart sign if the variation in the beats is more than 25% from the average beat.
Re: RV (# 2158)
So once you start getting ectopic beats do they never go away? :( there are MUCH better than they were last week but I can still feel
Them through out the day if I’m at rest and then when I lay down to go to bed. I’ve never had these before so don’t know what brought them on. I’m still thinking it was the soy but now will they not go away? I haven’t had soy in two days. Also when I get the ablation for SVT, will all of this go away ( praying it’s a success) ?
Re: Juliya (# 2154)
Hey Juliya, just wanted to check up on you how are you doing today? Hope you are better
