I'm 53 yr old Govt employee. I'm taking Desval-ER 500 mg for the last 3 yrs for nervous illness. Earlier I was taking Lithosun SR 500 mg b.i.d for the last 14-15 yrs..Dr. switched from lIthosun SR 500 mg to Desval-ER 500 mg as lithium accumulated in the blood due to which drastic weight loss had occured.. I use carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia since 1999. Last couple of years have tested low for sodium. Are there equivalent drugs without this side effects ## Hello, Mary! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. There are several others that you can try, include Neurontin and Lyrica. They are also anticonvulsants that have been shown to help with certain types of nerve pain. Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes. What has your doctor suggested? How low is your sodium?

I DO WANT ALTERNATIVE TO SERIQUIL BECAUSE I HAVE GAINED POUNDS IN MONTHS ## Hello, Jonathan! How are you? Unfortunately, all of the current bipolar medications available are known to cause weight gain, due to the nature of the way they work in the body. They can also cause dizziness, somnolence and dry mouth. You've usually just got to make sure to get lots of exercise and eat healthy to try to minimize it. What condition is being treated? Depending on your condition, there may be other options, but I can't say, without knowing this detail. Thank you!

Can anyone recommend a new psych medication? I am bipolar and have tried lithium for 3 years, tegretol, abilify, respedal 4 mg& seroquel which worked the best. But due to vision problems I needed to stop after 3 years. Now I am on Zyprexa 20mg 2x a day for anxiety. Not feeling it. I need to find a drug that will work with my topomax.(Topomax 100mg for migraines. )does anyone have any suggestions? ## Hello, Modelo! How are you? I'ms sorry about the problem that you're having. What type of doctor have you been seeing? Sometimes, people do better with a combination of medications, when others aren't working by themselves and a psychiatrist would be the best person to help you find the right combination for you. From your list, it seems you've not tried Depakote, yet. It ...

I was diagnosed Bipolar over 20 years ago. As many who have this "disease" I have been off and on many different types of meds. Many of those meds stopped working, no longer work, or I have an intolerance to. I have been on Equetro, Serequel, and Klonopen now for quite a while with success. I am "older" now and this years has been the worse year of my life with my bipolar. I am scared that it will overtake me again and so am vigilant with my meds NOW. After a really bad year of trying many different meds and combination of meds, I am finally doing well. However, when I get busy with all my life's responsibilities, I may forget a dose of my meds. This never use to bother me. I would just take the next dose and move on. LATELY though, if I miss even one dose, it is not...

Symbyax works 100% great on me. But SOO DARN expensive. Is there any thing that works AS GOOD BUT 3/4s cheaper? ## Hello, Dawn! How are you? Symbyax contains Olanzapine and Fluoxetine, both of which are available separately as generics, so you may want to check the prices at your pharmacy. It might work out to be cheaper for you to have your doctor prescribe them separately. There is nothing special in the formulation of Symbyax, it just combines the two drugs. This medication may cause side effects, such as nausea, sedation, somnolence, headache, dry mouth and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with?

I just started taking carbamazepine 200 mg. I was curious as to when this medicine reaches its full benefit? Also, will this medicine cause depression? Thank you ## Hi Dawn, According to the manufacturer, it has been stated that several weeks are often required in order for carbamazepine to reach its full effectiveness. However they also go on to note that improvements in symptoms may occur sooner in some patients. I would just recommend keeping an open line of communication with your doctor to discuss how things are going for you during the first few weeks of being on this medication. In certain situations it may take up to several weeks before you even notice enough changes in your symptoms to decide if this medication is really right for you. So I wouldn't worry if you don't ...

I took 1 Tegretol (first time) today. I am dizzy, falling down, room is spinning. My daughter is getting married tomorrow. I need these side effects to go away now. I am also on Lamictal, Clonipin and Vyvanse. Can someone please give me any specific advice as to get rid of the side effects now. I would never be able to function at my daughter's wedding as I am now. ## Wow, Sarah! I am very sorry! Starting so close to her wedding was likely not a great idea. Did your doctor advise this? How are you feeling? How did the wedding go? There's really no way to get rid of side effects that fast, it takes time for them to wear off. ## My Son AK (6 yr) has been on Tegretol since his 3rd seizure attack (primary generalized seizure as per EEG) on June 18-2014. I take 5 mg of altace (ramipril) daily for high bp. Can I take lithium orotate along with the Altace for depression? ## Hello, Nick! How are you? No, the Lithium really shouldn't be taken with an ACE inhibitor, because they tend to increase its toxicity, which may be dangerous. Has your doctor prescribed them both for you? What other antidepressants have you tried? ## Ok thanks. I'm not currently taking any antidepressants but heard very good things about lithium orotate. I have tried ssri's in the past and they don't seem to help.

I have been taking 400 mil Lamictall for bipolar 1 --for about a year and have noticed I have gradual memory loss and confusion since I've begun this drug. I leave water running, put stuff in the wrong places and can't seem to focus anymore. I feel spacey most or all of the time. Is this a normal side effect for this drug? ## Yes, most of these types of medications can cause that, with long-term use. Of course, the worry is the possible danger, say if you left the stove on, or your car in gear, thus I'd suggest speaking to your physician, perhaps there's a different medication you can try. Are there any other questions or concerns?

I am hoping for positive results as statistics show that the effecs of cymgen differ from individuals, some react negatively and some react positively. I took my cymgen pill today at 2pm I already feel a bit different and its only been a half hour. ## That is true of any medication, actually. Some people have great results and some don...

Hi, I have Bipolar depression since my childhood. I have been on Epitec 200mg for 9years now. I have not picked up any weight and honestly look terrible with being so skinny. I approached my Doctor and he tried to put me on Epilim but it did not seem to keep me stable so i moved back to Epitec. I've spoken to someone which introduced me to Zyprexa. I would like to know if Zyprexa would give me the same mental treatment as Epitec but will increase my weight. ## Hello, Mee! How are you? It might, but there's no guarantees and, even if it does, it will only last while you are still taking it. How tall are you and how much do you weigh? It would most likely be best to stick with using the medication that works for you, rather than trying something else, just because you're worri...

I was hoping somebody may be able to help me. I was taking 2x250mg tabs of LITHICARB morning & night & due to weight gain weened myself off of them approx 4 weeks ago. I felt fine at first however the last two weeks have suffered badly from depression & feel extremely angry. Some days I am ok but have felt worse & worse. Do you think this could be the fact that I've stopped the Lithicarb? I am puzzled as I felt fine at first. I have been feeling a little off colour & often get depressed when unwell but this seems extreme. Thanks in advance. ## Hello, Aj! How are you doing? Are you still suffering depression?
