I just started taking carbamazepine 200 mg. I was curious as to when this medicine reaches its full benefit? Also, will this medicine cause depression? Thank you

Hi Dawn,

According to the manufacturer, it has been stated that several weeks are often required in order for carbamazepine to reach its full effectiveness. However they also go on to note that improvements in symptoms may occur sooner in some patients.

I would just recommend keeping an open line of communication with your doctor to discuss how things are going for you during the first few weeks of being on this medication. In certain situations it may take up to several weeks before you even notice enough changes in your symptoms to decide if this medication is really right for you. So I wouldn't worry if you don't experience significant benefits within the first few days... It's just one of those things you have to patiently wait out before you can draw a decisive conclusion on how it's really working.

As far as depression is concerned, changes in mood and behavior are listed as general side effects from taking this medication. But this is not to say that these symptoms happen to everyone who uses carbamazepine.

I hope this info helps!
