Tussigon/hycodan 5mg For Dogs (Page 2) (Top voted first)

My dog needs this med every day for a collapsing trachia and I can't find it anywhere? Can you help?

For anyone whose pet is suffering and is in need of this medication: I found Hydrocodone aka Tussigon 5mg at University of Pennsylvania's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital (215.746.8387) ask to speak to the pharmacy. Your vet can probably call in the prescription and they will mail it to you. My springer spaniel was diagnosed with lung cancer and his cough was horrible. Ever since we started his on this medication (One 5mg pill per day), he has been absolutely fantastic! I can't remember the last time I heard him cough now. I would recommend this product anyday!!! Good luck :)

we got tussigon 5mg no problem at VCA in West Los Angeles, just last week. Walgreens et al were not carrying it, but the vets are.

It is available from Prime Mail pharmacy. My local Walgreens doesn't seem to be able to get it any more.

My 15 lb. terrier had his fractured leg splinted at vet today. The pain pills she sent home are called Hycodan (Tussigon) on the label. They were 15.00 for 5 pills!! The dose she ordered is 1/4 th tablet every 4 hours. That's only 1.25 mg But that didnt help at all. Does anyone know the dose for a 15 lb dog.

Rite Aid drug store can also get it but you need a day's lead time - they don't keep it stocked. Just as an aside, medications not approved in the US can still be obtained from Canada - your vet just needs to obtain special permission to have it imported for your dog. I had to do that for a medication my dog was using to help with his Cushing's Disease.

You have to go to a compound pharmacy to get this for your animals, I had a tough time getting it and I asked the vetinarian hospital and they directed me to a compound pharmacy. I was able to get 16 tabs for $15.11. It did indeed come in the generic form of Tussigon/homatropine.

I HAVE GIVING MY DOG THE HYDROCODONE 5MG TUSSIGON BUT HE ISN'T DOING TO GO HE IS STILL COUGHING WHAT ELSE CAN I GIVE HIM?

11 yr old Yorkie dx'd with Chronic Bronchitis. Rx'd Tussigon, 5mg, 1/2 tab BID. Can't get it down her with any of the old tricks -- cheese, peanut butter, etc. Any help appreciated. How do you just put it down their throats? No doubt this med helps when dosing is successful.

Just crush the pill up on a saucer with a spoon and heat up a bite of food(I use can corn beef hash). Then scrape the crushed pill onto the food and mix it up. I have a 19yr old Shih Tzu that takes Tussigon and this is the ONLY way I can get her to take it! Hope it works...

To Stormie's Mom --- thanks so much. I did not know that you could crust it -- will check with vet to be sure. But obviouly has not interfered with the effectiveness for you.

I give my dog tussigon everyday. Simply place the pill between two small pieces of soft whitte bread firmly closed around the edges. Your dog will feel he or she is getting a treat.

Try wrapping the pill in a thin slice (deli style) of roast beef or turkey breast. This is the only way I can give pills to my Pug. Also some dogs like the EZ Cheese that comes in the can. If your dog will eat it, this is GREAT for pill popping.

I don't know if you're still looking for help, but my doctor ordered prednisone along with the tussigon for cough. Made a huge difference.

Thanks everyone -- what a great group! Our little fur baby has had rough side effects with this medication and the vet has discontinued it for now.

With the 2x day dosing she could be totally out of it or periods of high anxiety and what looked like some kind of psychosis. Poor thing.....It "did" help her cough when I could get it down her --- and your ideas for dosing were most helpful.

Have you tried tucking the pill inside of an empty capsule? You can buy empty #3 or #4 capsules from a pharmacy or you can order online from www.capsuline.com I cut the capsules as small as can- the longer portion is cut big enough to hold the pill and then I cap it. Tuck it right into my dogs food and she never knows it's there

get it in liquid form, that is what I did, because I also have a poodle that will not take a pill.

High anxiety from the tussigon? do you think it was increasing the heart rate or just a bad reaction? Hope your furbaby is doing well soon!!!

My yorkie has been on tussigon for 4 weeks now after tracheal stint implant, I started with all the things you named and now I can only sneak it to him with meat, so grilled chicken breast, beef or any meat you feel comfortable giving, I only have to give a small amount and I bury the pill in it and he scarfs it down and has been doing that 3x's a day now for well over a week.
