My dog needs this med every day for a collapsing trachia and I can't find it anywhere? Can you help?
Re: shana (# 3)
I just received this for my older Pom on Saturday. Why would you say it's not available? I have 4 Pom's and my littlest guy at 6 lbs had a trachea collapse which cost me $10,000 in surgires. He's doing great but has his moments. I do a enhaler twice a day which costs me $260 to get it refilled through Walmart
This was really helpful when I first started looking so I'm providing an update for this area for how to find Tussigon generic is Hydrocodone-Homatrop 5-1.5mg tab.
I was finally able to find it at Rite Aid. They special ordered it for me -with a prescription from the vet. As of June 2017 it's $41.99 for 45 pills. I cut them in 1/4ths for my Maltese (collapsing trachea and enlarged heart). At the vet they were costing me $2.09 per pill. Incredible savings. Thanks Rite Aide! I had checked with numerous other pharmacies and they said they couldn't get it. In addition to Hydrocodone-Tussigon, she is on Vetmedin (Pimobendan), Benazepril and occasional meloxicam. Hope this helps someone else.
Hi he would get a quarter of a tab so yes you cut the half in half :) I had a pom on it and he was 10 pounds so I know the dose.
I have a few Tussigon/Hydrocodone 5 mg. tabs for my 17 lb. daschund...1/2 a tab per dose. I want to give some to my 9.9 lb. Chihuahua...would it be the same dose or should I cut the half-tab in half again for her?
My pharmacy closed at noon today and I forgot to pick up this med for my dog. Is there anything I could buy at a grocery store or dollar general store that I could give him until my pharmacy store reopens Monday morning?
tussigon yes you need a prescription from your vet or you can get hydrocodone/homatrophine 5 mg this is the generic brand and tussigan is the brand name
I have to get mine at a pharmacy that does compunding. Look those types in your phone book or the internet. Regular drug stores do not carry this. If you still can't find a pharmacy call a Urologist and ask for the name of a store that does compounding, They will know of one!
Thank you Cherie. I try not to let people like this rattle me, but I've been disabled for over 10 years now & am so tired of all the misinformation out there. And it always seems to be those who've never suffered who are the "know-it-all" of the medical world. I just truly hope people like this won't have to suffer, maybe one of the lucky ones & not have to eat their own words.
amen to this post, Marilyn.......
Your tone is a little less than cordial. Perhaps you have never suffered from any physical ailments. Lucky you. Maybe you should review History 101 & see how well the prohibition of alcohol worked. I do not have drug habits, nor does my dog. We take our medicine, as prescribed by a licensed pain management doctor. As stated previously, people who are in legitimate pain should not be lumped into a category with all the junkies in the world. There's a reason why opiates are produced, they have a proper place in medicine. Since obviously, you suffer no physical complaints, you do not know how government interference has hurt people. Do a little research before you encroach on territory that is not your strongest selling point. Last, but not least, thank god you're not my doctor.
Want do you want? -- open sales of Opioids ?-- really, I don't think you are suffering by the DEA limiting the use the Opioid drugs but "if you need them" - if you feel compromised I would suggest you may want to have your drug habits reviewed by a physician but please don't open up the sales to everyone. That's what they do in 3rd World countries -- isn't that going well.
I feel for you. But do not be embarrassed that you're on pain meds. As you said, we need them, trust me when I say, there's no "recreational" going on here, with me or my dog. Another item the media seems to have missed. Illicit drug overdoses are on the rise. Well fancy that. I listen at the doctor's, I see a lot of them. My mom is 86 so I go to her appointments also. People who are in true pain are being cut off, cut back, let go of by their doctors. They have no recourse but to go on the street. These are not your everyday junkies, but people who are in dire need & don't know what their doing getting involved in street drugs. The government mandates coming down are not just ruining lives, their killing people, in my opinion. Know my words are harsh, but get real, is the country in that great a shape that all that's left to fix is the junkie on the corner. Get real.
I sooo agree with this statement. As in your situation, both my dog and myself are on RX pain meds.....needed, not for recreational use as some would like to think......the media has been on the addiction train big time lately, I'm thinking at the behest of the government....restricting pain meds as the gov't has mandated and the media has hollered about has made me embarrassed to say I'm on the medication even though without I would have no quality of life whatsover and the same for my poor little dog.
Yes, many people have abused this drug & others. The problem is, those with legit medical problems are being punished along with the abusers. My dog, who is a rescue no one wanted because of her medical problems, why should she suffer. I also am in pain management. Had 14 surgeries on my right shoulder, 1 on my left, now facing 1 neck surgery as the plates in the right side are falling apart. I'm in my 50's now & had always enjoyed good health. I never really understood until I went through this. Without these pain medicines my dog would cough all day & I'd never get out of bed. They have given us both a quality of life we'd never have enjoyed otherwise. I still believe firmly & strongly government has no place in medicine. There will always be people who abuse anything & everything. People, pets in need should not be made to pay the price for them.
People like Rush Limbaugh were abusing this drug and the drug trafficker were delighted to supply him with it.
My dog is also prescribed this medication. I live in Virginia where a written prescription must be had to buy this. Most pharmacies don't stock this. Since this is an on-going medical problem, I usually call my pharmacist a week in advance, before her meds are due & give him a heads up. Don't know what state you live in, but I've been getting this for my dog many years & never had a problem. Only change is it used to be a call in drug, where is now one must have a written prescription. Government!!!
I feel your pain. As an owner of a 6pd 8yr old yorkie with a collapsed trachea, I know your pain and frustration first hand. The positive benifits of his meds is amazing. Here is my suggestion to you and any ppl in a similar situation. First find a vet that will prescribe "hydrocodone-homatropine s" 1.5mg/5ml, the syrup. I find it easier to give and find. Most neighborhood pharmacys will either have on hand and in stock or order, esp. with the "promise" and understand that it isn't a one time fill. ***Avoid pharmacy chains(they are often both more expensive and less likely to help) atleast imo.
My dog takes 0.75ml every 6-8 hrs and a 100ml bottle costs $25.00 so very affordable as well.
This was what I did and have had tremendous success in both trestment and acquisition.
My vet gave me mine for my maltese. She has enlarged heart, collapsed trachea. Her cough is awful without it.Check with your vet. It 35 for 20 pills.
Try using the Greenies Pet Pockets. Best thing I ever found. Finally I don't have to fight with my rat terrier to get a pill in her! Come in several flavors and sizes. Chicken and Peanut Butter so far. Not cheap but worth it!
