Suboxone And Pre Employment Drug Screen (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am prescribed suboxone for an opiate addiction maintenance program. First, will it show up in a ten panel test? Second, can an employer discriminate if they have already offered me the job? Third, is this violating any privacy laws?

Well, I finally heard back. I was upfront with them and had all the necessary paperwork but they denied me the job. They said I have a medical condition and I would have to be off subs for a year before I can apply again. Oh well, I guess that's what I get for being honest and upfront with them. Thanks for all the help and information.

Suboxone will show up on some standard testing now. Typically pre-employment no, but I know that most probation/court review, drug courts and welfare do. Depending on jurisdiction probably and county and state funding, I'd imagine, as well.

Point being though that in my experience suboxone doesn't have to be individually, specifically tested for in a lab setting anymore. My court review (I'm on no probation or drug court) was an instant result, 10-12 urine panel test, that had an immediate result of positive/negative for Bupe.

The test was relatively new as I had only been there a couple months prior and this was not included before and I actually had to explain what Bupe was and show proof of my prescription. Civil rights violations aside, it was there and I've heard about it becoming more common in more settings. Up until a few years ago suboxone was practically unknown in the mainstream but for years some states have made mandated testing for it a requirement in their judicial system. One being Maryland.

If you haven't experienced a standard urine test for suboxone yet you will soon. Don't belittle others because they've had a different experience than you and actually know what they're talking about from THEIR experience.

And no suboxone does not test positive as an opiate, it metabolizes in your body as an entirely own drug, BUPE.

Ash...Figures they'd catch up to test for bupenorhine , but if you're under treatment with it and have a valid script, it should be ok. But since it is a valid treatment for opiate addiction (classified as a disease) disclosure walks that thin line of privacy and HIPPA...however I'm voluntary on private insurance, so maybe that's different. But without a valid script, it'll probably cause a problem. Shame, cause it's worked wonders for me keeping me clear of oxy and heroin.

Amen brother. Tried the rehabs and 12-steps many times...if they work for someone, great. But the suboxone treatment is the closest to getting back to feeling like myself before opiate addiction. The DEA MAKES IT DIFFICULT, allowing a small number of licenses limiting patients. If more $&$ were spent on this program, it would allow people to resume productive lives.Guess we can dream and hope they see the light.

Wow...not sure if the reason I had such a hard time processing your reply was caused from the terrible grammar or your lack of obvious experience and actual facts.

I never wish too often to say "I told you so" but in your case I do wish I could be there when the time came.

If you had actually used your eyes and the grey matter in your skull called a brain you would've read that I stated most obviously that pre-employment screening does not typically test for it. Probation and courts in MANY JURISDICTIONS do.

Read my friend. Your "advice" is just what you think someone wants to hear, neither factual, educated or honest.

Ash...I hope you're not replying to my post, but rather David's. I have no problem using both my eyes and grey matter and was simply agreeing with your statements on the success of sub treatment as opposed to the 12-step programs. (Science vs. prayer.) My grammar seemed fairly clear, and I based my reply on personal experience and facts as I have researched. I' m simply offering information and opinion, again based on what I've experienced personally. I apologize if you took it the wrong way, but it seems I agreed with your viewpoint and was offering support to your post .

If I take a drug test for a job and they put my piss in two different bottles. Does anyone know if they do that if they would be testing for suboxone?

When I was pregnant I was taking subutex.... my doctor knew about it, my OB knew about it and everyone was okay with it. throughout my pregnancy I drastically reduced the dose so that by the time I actually had my son I was taking a half of a two milligram per day. my doctors were amazing throughout my pregnancy. flash forward to delivery time. My doctor induced me because she didn't want to have me go over my due date due to my medications. Note at the time I was only on subutex, period! after I had my son they had to do a c-section... my nurse took it upon herself to decide that I did not need any type of pain medication even as my stomach was entirely cut open and I was walking to the nicu every two hours for five days. my doctor who knew me very well prescribed them to me however my nurse took it upon herself not to tell me that I could have them so therefore I was walking to the NICU having taken just motrin. the nurses were literally talking about me outside of my hospital room telling each other that I was a heroin addict and that my son should be taken from me.... which I have never done in my life. In the NICU they had me so terrified that there was something wrong with my baby and as being a first time mother I didn't know any better. they told me there was something wrong with my baby because he did not sleep 3 hours straight as a breastfed baby. breastfed babies are lucky if they sleep an hour and a half to two hours at a time. However as a new mother I didn't know this and therefore was freaking out. cut forward to discharge from the hospital. took him to the pediatrician they tell me that he is perfect... totally healthy baby, no signs of withdrawal from anything and that I have absolutely nothing to worry about. They were appalled that I was treated the way. I was in the hospital and made to believe there is something wrong with my newborn baby. it was so bad that my mom who was a RN at the hospital where I had my baby went to the head of the Nursing Board and reported the hospital for the way that I was treated. All because I disclosed the medication that I was prescribed by my doctor. they had child services in my room about 6 times. They did three separate drug test on me and my son to which came up negative for everything. they actually wrote on his discharge paperwork that mom had a history of heroin which was a full out lie. and good luck trying to change a hospital record that is now on my son's permanent record at that hospital. I did what I was supposed to do. When I found out I was pregnant everything stopped. he to this day is my world and has totally changed my life for the better. I am an amazing mom and do everything for my son but I was treated like a bottom gutter junkie. And yet my doctors who knew me stuck up for me but the nurse is still made their own opinion. To this day it just pisses me off to no end that a person takes the steps to get clean, acknowledges that they have a problem and seeks out the help that they need.... and is treated like a piece of s*** because they are honest about their addiction!!!! hell a real heroin junkie could stop doing it 3 days before delivery and it probably wouldn't even show up.... Pisses me off. As to the drug testing, it did not show up positive for anything on the NUMEROUS drug tests they ran on me and my son. Now granted I was taking a very small dose... Hope this helps. To everyone who is taking a suboxone for the right reasons.... keep doing what you're doing and walking the right path to get better. Don't beat yourself up for a slip up, just take each day one at a time!!!

Be aware, i have seen questions about D.O.T pre employment tests. You can NOT be on either suboxone or subutex and legally drive a professional vehicle with a cdl!!!! Doesnt matter if it is prescribed or not it is on the banned list from the government. So do not volunteer the information at time of test if asked.

Say that I do test positive, will they call me to produce the prescription before they tell the company? what if they ask if Iam on any meds right before the test? Bc I have all these papers to fill out about medical history and stuff. Im just gonna leave everything off of there. Hopefully they call me to produce the script b4 they call the company IF IT IS Positive.

Yes they would call you first, at least any reputable center would. When you test make sure you let them know you'd like to know when results are in, what they were (pick up the copy) and just say you'd like to be aware so you can expedite your hiring process.

Let us know how it all goes please :)

I have a pre-employment drug test coming up next week which involves a urine test and a hair follicle test. Will the bupenorphrine in suboxone show up on the hair if not the urine? I'm thankful for suboxone but if my life depends on this job. I just don't want to not get it just because im prescribed suboxone. This job means the world to me, my recovery and most of all my family. Im debating on stopping it now so i'll get the job. Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry I didn't see this message until today. But either way I can't tell you for sure they wont test, but I'm pretty sure they have to request it specifically in a hair follicle, but these standards are changing so I can't say 100%. Can I ask if you taking suboxone and working there can't coexist? I know some enployers won't allow certain scripts because of side effects and liability issues.

If your just worried about people finding thinking less of you if they know it's prescribed for addiction maintenance you can deny this and state it's prescribed for pain. Unless your applying for a CDL, your medical history is no one's business but yours.

Good luck and please let us know how it went!

I know some CDL carriers have been forced to stop taking subs or quit...they always opted for the first. It's a tough call, I would take the test and not mention the suboxone at all, unless they mention the bupe in your results. Call the laboratory and simply ask what their usual standards are for testing. You can do this anonymously.

Let us know what happens, or what yoy decide to do :)

I Am wondering if the employer has to tell you whether or not they test for sub's.I am not perscribed suboxone and have been taking one per day for five months. I believe it is a 5-10 panel test (lab) urine test. Will it show up. I am worried that it will show up. I am in ohio. It's not a driving position. Do employers tell you they test for Suboxone.

Suboxin not narcotic. Simply works on same receptors (mu). Quit trying to scare people a#=hole! seriously how can you consider yourself a credible source on the site. People don't have to disclose that if they don't feel like it, cuz it could possibly in my be held against them..
