I have been on Propranolol 160mg for 15 years and as a result of a recent chest infection the doctor recommended I come off the beta blockers - I took them for cluster headaches and they have been wonderful. So, I decided to just give them up and here I am three weeks later with mild chest pains (I notice discomfort in my chest but it is not painful) but I am a bit shaky. The main issue I have noticed is my ability to write - my handwriting is very scruffy at the moment and I do not seem to be able to control it. Also, I find if I do something energetic I get a racing in my heart for 30 seconds afterwards. Hope this helps. As an FYI, I'm male and 48 years of age.

I have experienced exactly what you described. I would never have been able to go that long without a pill. I am now trying to come off of 60 mg a day after approximately 40 years on it. The doctor said just quit taking it and I suffered the feeling of someone pressing on my chest, shortness of breath, weakness, increased heart palpitations and feelings of doom. When I told him that once I couldn't find my medication, I suffered these symptoms, he really didn't believe me, I called him when they started and he sighed and said take them. I don't really want to be on such a large dose because it messes with your lungs. I have asthma and I think since I've gotten older, the effects of the medication on my lungs are worse.

Hello. How do you feel now? I am only on 10mg of propranolol per day and I am wanting to come off as it lowers my energy and impacts my ability to sleep. I hope you feel well. I would like to withdraw very slowly because I HATE HEART PALPITATIONS. Thank you!

Propranolol is the second most dangerous drug to stop suddenly, it can cause a whole raft of effects including sudden death, heart attack, grand mal epileptic fits and seizures and many other problems. Stopping it suddenly is a gross medical negligence. The effects of Propranolol after a head injury can be profound as I have found the effects of medication can become heightened so that 80mg might have the effect of 160mg or more. This slows your heart rate to dangerously low levels and causes fluctuation in blood pressure.. My Consultant Neuro surgeon took be off Propranolol suddenly and I suffered seizures, shaking, sweating etc. I can now no longer take any medications except Paracetamol, Propranolol at a low dose 2.5 mg once or twice a day down from my 18 years at 80mg a day split into two 40mg doses. Diazepam 2mg up to three times a day but acts like 10 or 20mg. A second bleed on my brain was missed because a MRI scan was not carried out before discharge and the second bleed was missed on the CAT scan that revealed the original subdural haematoma. I was discharged from hospital and suffered severe headaches, total 24/7 insomnia, and a feeling of constantly feeling as If I was going to the right (concussion) I gradually become more and more sensitized to medication, which resulted in my collapsing and being in hospital where the neurosurgeon stopped Propranolol due to my low heart rate and fluctuating blood pressure. upon discharge I started suffering seizures, due to Propranolol withdrawal, a MRI scan revealed a second bleed on the brain that was missed on the first CT scan. A MRI scan should have been done before I was discharged after the original CT scan following the head injury. MY GP didn't pick up on my headached nausea and concussion when I should have been referred back to The Neurology Department and didn't pick up on my growing sensitivity to Propranolol, Omeprazole and Prozac. In fact they gave me Codeine for the painful headaches. It was only after I collapsed twice after the Propranolol was stopped that a medic picked up on the withdrawal symptoms and restarted Propranolol that I can only tolerate at two 2.5mg doses per day sometimes my heart rate is too low to even take that, I am suffering from extreme anxiety and panic attacks to the point of being on the verge of a mental meltdown, having suicidal thoughts. After seeing a stroke specialist I have been taken off of all medications except Propranolol and Diazepam and can only take Paracetamol for pain. I am extremely angry and frustrated that my treatment for a severe head injury could have been so bad. I already have a claim against the council for the fall down a public staircase due to worn and broken nosings. I now wish to pursue a medical negligence claim but must avoid double recovery, I understand that this can be done, I also understand that there are other negligence surrounding my treatment, and that some of the effects of the injury and Propranolol withdrawal may be irreversible and life changing. I am awaiting brain activity monitoring, a 7 day cardiac monitor, psychiatric appointment, neuro psychologist appointment, etc.

Hi there, I feel like I can help you. I was on 120mg of Propranonlol and have been off for 2 weeks and am having severe withdrawal symptoms. I did withdrawal slowly from Propranolol. I see a functional medicine doctor these are doctors that go and get to the root cause of why you had anxiety in the first place. I do know that Propranolol can cause hypothyroidism which does a number on your body that is why I got off of Propranolol. I was put on Propranolol for awful headaches about seven years ago. I found out that Propranolol hats cause me to have low thyroid. So I'm coming off and the withdrawals are not fun but they don't last. I would recommend you see a functional medicine doctor. They can tell you why you have anxiety. Also Propranolol blocks the uptake of the thyroid hormone from getting to your cells and it also blocks magnesium from getting to your cells. Magnesium is supposed to do the same exact thing as Propranolol for panic attacks and anxiety. The body does not absorb magnesium really well in pill form a lot of the times. So what I did was I purchased some magnesium oil with you spray on your body and it gets right into your system. A functional doctor will be able to tell you through tests why you have anxiety. A lot of the time anxiety and panic attacks are deficiencies in the body of certain minerals vitamins and enzymes. I would have a lot of tests run by a functional medicine doctor test for your vitamin B your vitamin D for magnesium and calcium and for the thyroid. Most standard doctors do not test right for thyroid period they test your TSH which is overall thyroid but functional medical doctors know how to test for T4 and T3 cell function. I am still on the road to recovery and I will share with you anything I find out that helps with anxiety.

I am slowly coming off of 60mg of propranolol a day. Because my B/P was low. Jan. my Dr. cut it right in half. My B/P is still dropping at night. Now my other Dr. cut it back 10mg. I take 20mg a day. My chest pain has changed and is more severe and my B/P is getting lower at night. What if they totally take me off propranolol? Will my chest pain get even worse and what about my B/P at night?

I weened myself from 60mg to 20mg then cut it in half for two weeks then stopped taking Propranolol. I had only been taking it for a month. Now I'm having worse migraines and when I stand up I can feel the blood rushing to my head and my BP has spike to the 150,s. I'm going to start doing cardio. I'm just worried this blood rushing to my head every time when I stand up is going to have some kind of negative effect on my health. Any ideas?

Please consider seeing your medical provider before jumping off your BP med. Did you get your hyperthyroidism resolved? Have you consulted with someone about an exercise regime or dieting? I have lost weight on propranolol
