Taking Subutex And Percocet Together (Page 6) (Top voted first)

Updated

My doctor just put me on subutex along with percocet. I've been on percocet for yrs for severe and chronic migraines. He told me to take the subutex and if it doesn't work to take a percocet. I usually take 15 mg percocet at a time. I've read some stuff online that worries me. Some people say if you take percs with subutex you'll go into withdrawals. I went through severe withdrawals with fioricet months ago and I don't want to go through that hell again. I took my first subutex about an hour ago and I still have a migraine so I want to take a perc now. Can I do that or will I get sick?

This is a pretty active site, always ignore the haters always. I have been taking Subutex and use 5mg Percs for pain spikes I get from serious activity, then I cut the Percs out as the pain settles down. I have informed my VA doc and my primary doc and the guy who prescribes my Subutex. He is the only one that goes nuts over my use of Percs for really heavy duty pain, or migraines. The Subutex, 24mgs a day only gives me about 25% pain relief, its just not enough for me to do all the things he wants me to do to improve my fitness level. If I am that active I need more pain support. If I do nothing I gain weight lose muscle and hate life. I am living every mnute of everyday because I have CVID also, I have had near death expierence twice at least. I am "DEADMANWALKING." I have had more lives than a cat. My more specific question is: What is the issue with the receptors using Subutex and Percocet irregularly. The guy who prescribes the Subutex says Im defeating the purpose of the Subutex, he is of the "either or camp." The Subutex just doesnt control the pain enough. My pain on Subutex alone is 4 out of 10 versus 6 out of 10 withot Subutex. Before Subytex every morning was 8 out of 10 when I tried to get up. Now its 5 out of 10 geting up in the morning. When I am really active it reaches 7 out of 10 for a short time until I take 10mg of Percocet which reduces the pain and I slow down and rest bringing pain back down.

I've had two decades of nightmarish pain. Most pain management doctors failed miserably rotten attitudes and lousy approaches to medicine. Pain management doctors must be the bottom of the barrel, I would love to print names and cities. Anyway a couple of more progressive doctors Ive encountered saw value in mixing Percocet and Subutex for sever pain. They even saw a value in surgery for a really bad spine. Now because of forward leaning doctors and a surgeon willing to do a radical spine surgery I don't need to cocktail stuff once thought unmixeable. I never had withdrawals, I never got crazy high (sorry recreational users) it just cut mind bending pain.

I ran out of my Subs thanks to a friend stealing them from me and I've been on these and methadone both. They told me the withdrawals from subs was nowhere near as bad as any opiates, methadone, etc. Well that's BS, for me anyway I went through five days of pure hell. Well mainly day 3-5 but everyone's different I guess. I did learn even if you take 2+ a day if you are running short a little is waaay better than none. Just a heads up if anyone gets in the situation I was in, I learned the hard way. Also to not trust anyone around my meds. Hope this helps someone.

You guys are getting your drugs all mixed up. the guy that said he went into withdrawals taking subutex, no he had to be on suboxone. subutex you can take with percs. subutex will not I repeat not put you into withdrawals. lets get it straight. you guys are giving misinformation out there. now suboxone will, but if you wait 12 to 14 hours after your last perc and you take suboxone you will be OK. subutex it does not matter, that is why they came up with subutex. its mainly for opiate users so when they mess up and go back on the opiates they won't get sick. it is making me sick listen to all you guys getting this all screwed up and getting these people all scared and letting them get sick when there is no need to worry. if you have subutex now get it right, subutex is different then suboxone. subutex you don't have to wait, suboxone you do. 12 hours has always worked for me but either a quarter of a strip or a quarter of a pill to start out with then later you can increase, but all you need is a quarter, same with subutex. I only take a quarter of a pill now. get it right folks and know the name of the stuff your taking. subutex is a white pill, suboxone is an orange pill or a orange strip.

If you have a lot of opiates in your system, when you take your first dose of Subutex, the Subutex will compete with, and kick other opiates off the opiate receptors. However, Subutex has 'weaker' opiate effects than methadone - and this reduction in opiate activity may be experienced as withdrawal. As it has been caused by the first dose of Subutex, it is called 'precipitated withdrawal'. You can reduce the likelihood of precipitated withdrawal by:

- lowering the amount of opiates you take before Subutex
- delaying the first dose of Subutex (wait and take it when you are in early stages of opiate WD)
- Starting with low Subutex doses (high doses of S can remove other opiates off receptors and cause GREATER precipitated WD

I had a neck fusion and 2 lower back fusions in the past 8 years. I went on subutex strictly for pain.
I just went to the er for tooth pain that turned into an infection. They gave me 4mg morphine and antibiotics through an IV drip. They sent me home with a prescription for antibiotics and Percocet knowing that I'm on subutex. Can I take both subutex and Percocet?

I agree completely with what you said! I had my hip replaced, had to taper off subutex, to start taking narcotics (they WERE needed because of the surgery). But now my pain Dr wants me to STILL take the narcitics (they make me feel CRAPPY) & the pain is mostly controlled with OTC anti-inflammatory meds. I have been tapering off opiates very slowly, but the withdrawals are kicking my butt, especially at night. During the night (last night) I couldn't handle the sweats, jumpy legs, feeling sick, etc. So I took 2 mg if Subutex & it worked like a miracle! I WANT to be off opiates & just get back to Subutex, I feel SO MUCH better on them! I suffer from chronic pain & some may argue that Subutex doesn't help with pain. It helps ME to live a semi-nornal life, narcotic-free!

Just to also clarify AGAIN AS A FEW HAVE CORRECTLY stated subutex has no naloxone in it so if your using it you can theoretically feel euphoric effects from naroctic analgesics but most likely you wont. The bup in it is stronger than most all opiates out there and over powers it. You will not withdrawal if you cross use these medications. Now suboxone is different and also different with each individual. It will put you in withdrawal and the time for which this happens varies person to person. Best advice is to be in withdrawal before you take it and even better advice is to refrain from opioid use if your taking either. The drug's purpose is to maintain your wellness while detoxing ..or getting off pain killers in some cases where someone has legit chronic pain but has a problem controlling opiate use. It's used for pain management. That's why I use it. It keeps me clean and controls my chronic pain... MY QUESTION IS WHY ARE PEOPLE TAKING THESE DRUGS WITH OPIATES? MAKES NO SENSE. IM NO DR BY ANY MEANS BUT I QUESTION A DOCTOR'S KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL AND ETHICS IF HE IS PRESCRIBING THEM TOGETHER. GOOD LUCK ALL.

PARAMEDIC: You are so wrong. THE BUPRENORPHINE ITSELF WILL GIVE YOU WITHDRAWALS. I was never on Suboxone, only, Subutex, and I went into HORRIBLE precipitated withdrawals from doing Subutex too soon after opiates. I have posted this many, many times. DO NOT TAKE SUBUTEX TOO SOON AFTER OPIATES/OPIOIDS!!

I agree, i cant believe a doctor is giving buprenorphine with percocet...because just back in the fall, i know that bup. wasn't approved by FDA etc. for pain management...even though for years its been given for pain in other countries. unless the dr is telling them its for pain but documenting otherwise, even so, it would be harder to explain why their giving perc. also..just because a med is approved, drs must chart why its given and they must not say its for anything besides the diagnosis it says its for..some drs will give stuff for one thing but document another. Posted below is a website with a couple links to specific articles that explain things...yes buprenorphine and percs shouldn't take them both same time, taking the perc just a few hours after bup. and shouldn't cause withdrawal...taking percs first and bup. immediately after...bupenorphine is a synthetic opiate, its part agonist (full agonists are oxy, hydro, methadone etc.) partial agonists activate opioid receptors in brain, but to much less degree than full agonists like percocet, but bup is also part antagonist (full antagonist example is Naloxone). part antagonists blocks other opioids while allowing for some opoid effects to suppress withdrawal symptoms and cravings....put it this way, if someone thinks they have withdrawal symptoms taking subutex and percocet close together, they dont know what very bad symptoms similar to withdrawal really are until they take suboxone even 24 hrs between taking say percocet....thats what true 100% withdrawal symptoms feel like..i know because ive seen people take opiates and suboxone a couple hours apart and some say the opiate wasn't as noticeable as usually and some said the buprenorphine (subutex) effects seemed more intense than if taken alone...but every time ive seen or heard of anyone taking a opiate like percocet in the same 24 hr day as suboxone, they got so sick and threw up they didn't notice if they felt either, the nausea and vomiting is all noticed, and usually they throw both medications up that afterwards they feel nothing... [1] naabt.org/education/opiates_opioids.cfm and [2] naabt.org/education/opioids.cfm and last [3] naabt.org/faq_answers.cfm.....bup is partial synthetic opiate but methadone is probably one of the most effective meds given for pain, it actually helps pain more so than giving so much euphoric effect and lasts longer than most pain meds...

ME: I've done PLENTY of research, as well as having been on Subutex. (that's actually how it's spelled) Sure you CAN take them together, but you won't like the results.

I see what you mean and I applaud you for having a big heart and showing concern for other addicts, but we come here looking for answers and only answers. I doubt you would, but it would be wrong to mislead them in an effort to deter them from using their drug of choice. There are other platforms for that. But like I said, I know it comes from a good place in your heart.

kkh: I hope you weren't offended by my previous post. That wasn't my intention. Personally, I think we need more people like you posting information on here so the less knowledgeable readers can receive honest and accurate answers. Maybe I was mistaken when I thought you were posting info in an effort to deter people from using. I apologize for any miscommunication.

JAMES: You CAN'T "take whatever" with Subutex but not Suboxone. Subutex will throw you into precipitated withdrawals, just like Suboxone will. The buprenorphine itself is the problem (the active opioid ingredient in both Subutex and Subuxone). The binding affinity of the buprenorphine will knock any and all opioids off of your receptors, whether the Naloxone is in there or not. So if you want to risk going into a really bad rattle, don't believe me. Anyone who is saying you can take opioids and Subutex together is probably on a very low dose of both, or doesn't know what they are talking about The Naloxone is in Suboxone to keep people from taking it intravenously. I PERSONALLY went into precipitated withdrawals when taking Subutex too close to opiates. NOT SUBOXONE, SUBUTEX!! I NEVER want that to happen again!

JAMES: Yes, it may not be as extreme with Subutex as with Suboxone because of the Naloxone not being in the Subutex (although it was pretty extreme for me) but it is more about the binding affinity of the Bupe than the Naloxone anyway. I just get so sick of seeing people who have no clue, on here talking about "you are fine without the Nalxone" etc. NO, no you are not. Or saying that if a person wants Subutex rather than Suboxone, it is only because they want to "keep using". You cant keep using with Subutex; believe me, I tried.

I am sorry your child is having trouble. I wouldn't wish this life on anyone. And as you said, it is truly a shame that not all people on ORTs take it completely seriously. But that, unfortunately, is the nature of the beast with addiction, ESPECIALLY opioid addiction, since it is so physical. Good luck to you and your child.

ZACH: Yes, exactly, and yet look at all the comments saying otherwise. It's just a medical, scientific, proven fact. Yup, what Zach said. These *****s are going to throw someone into a really bad time. Hopefully people on here won't believe their BS.

As a nurse, and familiar, with both medication. Briefly put Subutex, taken with a narcotic pain medication, will not cause you to have withdraw. I've had to do that, but you should try to titrate off the percs,at some point. NOW WITH THAT SAID PAY CLOSE ATTENTION, IF YOU TAKE SUBOXONE WITH A NARCOTIC YOU COULD HAVE WITHDRAWS OR ACTUALLY THE NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS WOULD NOT relieve ANY PAIN,BECAUSE SUBOXONE HAS NARCANE IN IT TO BLOCK NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS (opiates) FROM REACHING THE PARTS OF THE BRAIN THAT RECEIVE PAIN SIGNALS.
WITH THAT SAID,MAKE SURE YOUR DOCTOR ALWAYS WRITES (SUBUTEX)IF YOU CONTINUE ON OPIATES FOR PAIN.YOUR FORTUNATE,THAT YOUR DOCTOR IS EDUCATED AND WILLING TO GIVE BOTH,AND IM SURE HE MUST HAVE COUNSELED YOU TO TRY AND USE LESS AND LESS PAIN MEDS, AND USE THE SUBUTEX, MORE AS TO SUSTAIN, A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SUBUTEX AS THE BASE,NOT FOR BREAKTHOUGH PAIN.BUT,I AGAIN REINTERATE,DON'T GO ON SUBOXONE, SAME AS SUBUTEX, BUT HAS NARCANE IN IT TO BLOCK OPIATES FROM REACHING THE BRAIN. GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS, AND BE SAFE,AND KEEP STUDYING, WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY.YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.
