Taking Subutex And Percocet Together (Page 7) (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy doctor just put me on subutex along with percocet. I've been on percocet for yrs for severe and chronic migraines. He told me to take the subutex and if it doesn't work to take a percocet. I usually take 15 mg percocet at a time. I've read some stuff online that worries me. Some people say if you take percs with subutex you'll go into withdrawals. I went through severe withdrawals with fioricet months ago and I don't want to go through that hell again. I took my first subutex about an hour ago and I still have a migraine so I want to take a perc now. Can I do that or will I get sick?
GARBAGEHEAD: You are wrong. The buprenorphine itself IS the "blocking agent". It's unreal to me how many people get this wrong.
Yes, this is correct. When I was severely abusing Roxicodone, I chose to go to rehab. They kicked me out of one rehab (due to an insurance glitch), and sent me to a detox hospital in the hood. I saw a pediatrician- I had to pay him $500 in cash because he was out of network. They had no doctors. They were completely unaware (on an addictions/detox unit), of precipitated withdrawal. I was pursing my lips, refusing to take 24 mg of Subutex pills. They forced me, and I went into the worst withdrawal I had ever been in before. (I had taken strips many times after running out of Roxicodone, & always waited the 24-72 hours). However, people abuse Subutex pills more than strips. And I do think that the Naloxone blocker is stronger. When I used to take strips, I had to wait longer for opiates to work once I got them. With the Subutex pills, opiates worked much faster afterwards. But yes, BOTH send you into rapid withdrawal...
That is surprising because like I mentioned, even when folks go to an inpatient rehab to detox from regular opiates, they are given Subutex pills without the Naloxone. And they absolutely wait the necessary 24-72 hours so that the person doesn't go into precipitated and rapid withdrawal. I wold imagine that the reason why you are taking Subutex after a real opiate is to avoid withdrawal. It is very surprising that rapid withdrawal is not occurring for you.
Finally, a correct response.
Suboxone contains naloxone, so if switching from any longterm use of opiates, especially Methadone, waiting tI'll withdrawal onset is essential, or you're screwed. Subutex contains no naloxone, so not the same applies.
And I had mixed a 30 mg oxycodone with my subutex. No withdrawals whatsoever
Your confused Because thats not true! U can take Subutex and percs! Just not suboxone and percs!
I've been on Subutex for two years but I've had a lot of major dental work. My doctor asked me to stop taking this 24 hours in advance and then I was prescribed 10 mg Percocets. The first time I did it like that and it was fine. The second time I didn't wait the 24 hours and was still perfectly fine. So I don't know why in the world you're going through withdrawals because it doesn't have the naloxone in it. Now if you were talking about Suboxone that would be a different story. I can personally vouch that I was perfectly fine and my doctor told me to do it. I know this post was written in a long time ago but I had to put my two cents in considering I've been in that exact situation. Maybe it's just some peoples bodies are different.
Are you sure it wasn't suboxone, rather than subutex? I just ask because when I went to rehab four years ago, I popped 3 Vicodin outside of the door before checking in and then they have me 2 subutex within an hour of being there and 2 more at dinner and continued for the next 6 days and I felt great. Thanks
So I have been through a c-section while on subs; worst pain in the world. I was told if I stopped taking them my child could die. It was my first son and I was so upset when they told me this bc I did not want my child to be born with drugs in mine or his system. So I've done alot of praying and started cutting myself back myself to a very small dose, less then 2mg while preg. After the c-section the pain meds did not help but I didn't care bc I was just worried about my son but thank god he never showed signs of withdrawals. The doc. And nurses where so confused bc I was supposed to be taking three 8mg a day but when they gave them to me I disposed of them all except a little bit bc out of worry I could hurt my child if I completely stopped. But take it from me, if u plan on having any surgery or need any pain meds wing your self down very low until u can completely stop, go through a couple days of withdraws no matter how hard it is (unless ur preg) then start your pain meds otherwise the pain meds will not help you at all. I pretty much went through a c-section without any help from pain meds bc they gave me my subutex and pain meds and the two together is not a good combination bc it's like they cancel each other out. This is just my advice and in no way should u listen to me. Always talk to your doctor and let him tell u what is best for u in any case when it comes to your med and your pain. He knows what's best for u and what is safe for u. Best of luck and god bless. Also my best advice to anyone is get yourself clean with help from the subutex or suboxone and then wing ur self off that when ur comfortable so that u can control the urge to feel high, but stop them that way when something does happen and u need pain meds u will get help with the pain meds bc take it from me it's so hard when nothing helps the pain.. And in my opinion it takes a good 5 days to get the subutex out of ur system and even then it takes alot more pain meds then it would for a person who does not have a problem to get any kind of pain relief from the pain meds.. I have been clean from everything now going on three years thanks to the grace of god and the love I have for my children and I have never felt better. It was a long and hard journey but anyone can do it if they set their mind to it and work really hard at changing your life. Whether u are doing it for yourself or someone else u can do it, if you try really hard and work at it everyday. God bless and my prayers are with everyone on here. I know what it's like and how it feels as well as how hard this is!
I'm amazed at how many people talk but are actually unaware of what's going to happen, I saw two people that actually knew...Suboxone and opiates don't mix well. It's a process to switch but SUBUTEX and opiates will NEVER PUT U IN WITHDRAWALS. I've literally mixed the two up not just once either. I did it for months. I do realize that I might have not gotten the FULL effect of other drug... I've been on Suboxone now 5 years and 1 year on Subutex. I even taken bunavel which sticks to your cheek and is above all the rest so far, less taste fast dissolve and half the blocker. The half life is a little shorter but you're taking half the dose of Subutex and Suboxone and getting a lot more effect. The kid that talked about Narcan and you wouldn't get sick listen to him, he's smart. These other posts are crazy. Honestly, everyone is different but the best way to find out is to pick up phone, call a hospital and ask them sometime, anonymous though.
Yes u can do it. Just never take a sub after an opiate. U will be in the worst detoxes ever. Wait atleasy 8 hrs to take sub after taking other pain meds
You won't get sick if you take percs with subutex. Although you won't feel any effects from the percs. Subutex is very powerfully and even though it's not an opioid your tolerance for them is high. Iv been on 2 - 8 mg subs per day for 7 years. I had 2 teeth pulled a while back and was prescribed 10/325 norcos. I took 3 norcs as soon as I picked up my script (what can I say, I'm an addict) about an hour after taking a subutex and slept the rest of the day. It probably wasn't the smartest thing to do but it definitely didn't make me sick.
Hi~
Why do people see that it is okay to put others down. They're asking questions help them don't put them down. That is BS one day you may be in their shoes. If you're not already. SHAME!!!!
Yea because subutex has the buprenorphine in it and that's what makes us go into precipitated withdrawal. Trust me I found out the hard way by thinking the same thing.
Forreal, if u take suboxone and a pain killer u will w/d, but subutex is a whole nother thing. It is a opiate. I was on suboxone for 2 years, got pregnant, they put me on subutex and I just had surgery and they gave me percocet 5mg, so u can take them together. It won't give u any euphoric effect, but the pain will go away.
Re: My name is none of your business (# 552)
You are so wrong!! Like the above posters said, it is the BUPE not the naloxone that causes precipitated withdrawals. I work at a pain clinic at Brigham and women's hospital and we get this question ALL THE TIME. Buprenorphine is very sticky to the receptors and if you take say Percocet after either suboxone or subutex you will be fine. The problem comes if you then try to take the subutex or suboxone AFTER taking the perks. Since bupe has such a high affinity for the receptors, if you take a perk and then take bupe after, it will kick ALL of the perks out of your receptors (because AGAIN the subs have a super strong affinity to go in the receptors) and you will be thrown into horrible withdrawal. Trust me I have seen it in patients that didn't listen and decided to take a pain pill and they were very unhappy campers. Precipitated withdrawals can last for a good amount of time (probably feels like forever). But people need to stop posting false information!! Subutex/suboxone are both made of bupe and that is the blocker. If you are on a low dose, say 2mg and you take a pain pill you will get some relief but not a ton. So please people just know that bupe is the problem when it comes to precipitated withdrawals. I have only seen one person be able to take subutex 4 hours after taking dilaudid and she did not experience the withdrawals. The reason, my clinic believes? Is because this person is a rapid metabolizer of opiates. The head doctor put her on methadone and after 2 weeks she started burning through it so fast that she would go into withdrawal 5 hours after her dose, and she took it 4 times a day. By the 3rd week she was in a constant state of withdrawal bc the methadone was being burned so fast. To confirm this "belief" the doctor did a special genetic evaluation on her to see if she was a rapid metabolizer and she was. But that is the only time we have seen someone not experience withdrawals. It's because she has an excess of an enzyme in her body that is responsible for metabolizing methadone.
From experience, Don’t take the Percocet until at least 12 hrs or you will go into precipitated withdrawals! I tried taking subutex on the same day that I had been taking my prescription morphine and it made me feel like crap! Good luck and God Bless!
Wow!!
I think this would work better for everyone that's on medication. Do what you're supposed to do. Do what your doctor tells you to do and move on with life. Then you won't have to worry about "will I get sick, will I not get sick" when I take a Percocet. What will or won't happen. I take my medication like I'm supposed to. Maybe you should try it, it's not so bad.
Good health to you.
Re: Mr clean (# 575)
I know for a fact if you take suboxone after taking any opioid you will feel like you are going to die. Trust me. You need to wait till about 24 hrs after your last opioid or you will be sorry. You need to be already withdrawing pretty good before taking subs. I have been taking subs for 10 years. I started with subutex then went to suboxone. When I ran out of pain meds (fentanyl, percocet, oxycodone) I would take a sub and it would be about 10 hrs after pain meds and I still would start sweating, shaking and contemplate suicide, that's how bad you feel. That's why your sub Dr tells you to be already withdrawing for about 24 hrs before starting the first morning of inductions at their office. It's because the buprenorphine has higher receptor attachment and strips any opioid and it's like being raw until your body accepts the new antagonist; it's called precipitated withdrawal and is 10 times worse than a regular withdrawal. That is the truth from someone who has been there.
Re: Asmash (# 587)
I'm so confused. Are you looking for help or are you just looking for a high? I'm just asking that's all. Just please be careful so you don't end up a statistic.
