I forgot that I left my bottle of the liquid Sulfamethoxazole out and it's been sitting in room temperature for over a week. Is it still good or no? ## Hello, Katie! How are you? Most likely not, you should probably just dispose of it. Liquids tend to degrade much faster than other forms, especially if let out at room temperature. I was visiting my sister in PA and developed a bad urinary tract infection. I went to an Urgent Care walk-in. After getting the results of the culture, the doctor put me on sulfamethoxazole tmp ds. I took 2 and noticed that my face and neck was flushed. I had an appointment with my doctor in NJ when I got home, so I told her what I was given and about the flushing. She contacted the walk-in and got the results of the culture and told me to stop taking the sulfa drug and take the amox. After reading about each drug, it sounds to me as though the sulfa drug is better for a UTI. After taking the 2 sulfa pills, I felt like I had no symptoms at all but after 2 of the amox, I have some slight symptoms. Is one better than the other for a UTI? ## Hello, Jean! How are you? is sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim related to penicillin Im allergic to Penicillin I have a cold and I wanted to make sure I am safe taking this drug ## Hello, Renay! How are you? I'm sorry that your sick. No, this is a sulfa based antibiotic in a different drug family. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, joint aches, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, antibiotics will not do anything to treat a cold. Colds are caused by viruses and antibiotics, such as this, are only effective at treating bacterial infections. Additionally, taking it when it isn't appropriate creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Hi, on Saturday I woke up with a fever of 100.6. I decided to go to minute clinic because my primary doctor was not open on the weekend. The nurse practitioner there checked me and told me I have fever and a very small bladder infection. Because it was small, she sent it out to see if it would grow. She prescribed me ciprofloxacin which really messed up my stomach. So I called and she gave me a new prescription which was sulfamethoxazole which also took a toll on my stomach too so I stopped the medication. I have been off it for a day and I'm still having really watery diarrhea. It does not stop since I've taken the first pill of ciprofloxacin. How long does it take until I get back to normal? I have no fever, and the nurse practitioner called back and said I had no bladder infe...

on 5/27/14 i was prescribed Expired Sulfamethoxazole 800mg-trimethorprim 160 mg. The pharmacist wrote an illegible expiration date. How long is this med usually good for? and would it be safe to take almost 1 year later? ## Hello, Joey! How are you? If they are in a pharmacy bottle, the expiration would be one year from when they were dispensed to you. So, the expiration date wouldn't be until 05/26/2015. At that point, they start to degrade and may lose effectiveness. I am throwing up about an hour after taking the medication....I feel so sick from throwing up every 10 minutes. What can I do for this awful problem? Thank you! Daria ## Hello, Daria! How are you? Any of these 3 medications could cause nausea and it's likely worsened by taking all 3 of them. Have you consulted the doctor, again? They may be able to prescribe something to help with the nausea. Oxycodone is classified by the FDA as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. I have found several in my sons room along with some sleep aid but for the life of me I can't figure out what they are!!!! Can anyone help PLEASE??????? ## Hi Amy, Based on your description, the closest match I'm seeing is a white oblong pill imprinted with VP 120 on one side and blank on the other. It's reportedly identified as a Sulfamethoxazole (800mg) + Trimethoprim (160mg) DS tablet, used for treating a variety of bacterial infections. I realize the imprint isn't spot on, but because they are very similar, I get the sense that they may be manufactured by the same company (Vista Pharmaceuticals) - hence the "VP". Perhap...
