Sulfamethoxazole Tmp Ds Vs. Amox Tr-k Clv

I was visiting my sister in PA and developed a bad urinary tract infection. I went to an Urgent Care walk-in. After getting the results of the culture, the doctor put me on sulfamethoxazole tmp ds. I took 2 and noticed that my face and neck was flushed. I had an appointment with my doctor in NJ when I got home, so I told her what I was given and about the flushing. She contacted the walk-in and got the results of the culture and told me to stop taking the sulfa drug and take the amox. After reading about each drug, it sounds to me as though the sulfa drug is better for a UTI. After taking the 2 sulfa pills, I felt like I had no symptoms at all but after 2 of the amox, I have some slight symptoms. Is one better than the other for a UTI?

It depends on what the culture showed, that is what would decide which is the best antibiotic.

The typical side effects of antibiotics, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Thank you for your reply. My last pill is tomorrow and I still don't feel like it's completely gone. I'm thinking maybe the sulfa drug would have worked better. I may call and see if I can get another u/a taken. Do you think that would be a wise thing to do?
