on 5/27/14 i was prescribed Expired Sulfamethoxazole 800mg-trimethorprim 160 mg. The pharmacist wrote an illegible expiration date. How long is this med usually good for? and would it be safe to take almost 1 year later?

If they are in a pharmacy bottle, the expiration would be one year from when they were dispensed to you. So, the expiration date wouldn't be until 05/26/2015.
At that point, they start to degrade and may lose effectiveness.
This is an antibiotic and the FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
