Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 34)
UpdatedI have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...
HELP! I feel like my body is falling apart after taking metronidazole. I have constant shakiness & weakness throughout my body, chest pain, headache & neuropathy all through my extremities. I took a 5 day course for Giardia, and was feeling awful during the treatment, was off 5 days & they put me on an increased dose for 4 days & I finally called my Dr. I told him I was having severe side effects &I he did nothing! It is really scary as I have been completely off the medication for 3 days & still having severe side effects. Is there anything that can help these symptoms? I am physically unable to hardly even walk &I it's terrifying!! Are any of you medical Dr's or is this just a patient forum?
The doctor who prescribed my husband's antibiotics informed us that the FDA has just sent a warning to doctors that Ciprofloxacin (the other one that was prescribed at the same time as the M.) should not be prescribed unless as a very last resort, since it's so very dangerous to the human body. (Look up ciproispoison.com). Apparently, the way Cipro works, is it destroys the DNA of the bacteria, but there's nothing that stops it from also destroying your DNA!! I suggest you stop taking it immediately, unless you want to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair! There are other things you can take to kill germs, natural and also conventional medicine. My husband had diverticulitis, and we stopped the medication when he could hardly walk anymore, and I started giving him Aloe Muciliginous Polysaccharide (AMP). That fixed his diverticulitis. It's gone. It costs around $150 for a month's supply and you have to order online, probably, but it was worth every penny! I got it from Amazon and had them next day it since we were desperate. Now we just need to fix the damage from the antibiotics. That's why I'm looking into Organic Sulphur. It is said to actually aid in rebuilding cartilage, as well as detoxing your body from the meds. I hope you can get fixed up too.
I would suggest reporting everything you have been feeling to the FDA. That's what I did when I stopped taking metronidazole.
Hi, Shelley. I'm so sorry you're going through this—unfortunately, what you're describing sounds like all the classic signs of having an adverse reaction to Flagyl (aka metronidazole), including your difficulty walking (I know, I went through it last year). I suggest you google metronidazole toxicity and metronidazole FDA label in order to learn more about it. The side effects can linger after you've stopped taking the drug—it affects your cerebellum and central nervous system. Some people recover quickly after they've stopped taking it—others can take longer. Doctors do not know how to properly recognize and treat this; don't expect anything from them except denial. They will blame it on stress and anxiety. The biggest thing that will help you now is giving yourself time to heal.
Elaine, thank you for providing a perfect example of just how clueless doctors are. This new FDA warning about Cipro…patients have been complaining about these adverse reactions to fluoroquinolone antibiotics for TWENTY YEARS. It's so common, they have a name for it—it's called, "getting floxed." It's taken this long for the FDA and doctors to realize these antibiotics do this. That being said, there is one thing to note here—metronidazole IS NOT a fluoroquinolone anitibotic. It's not in the same class as Cipro, Levaquin and Avelox, and the recovery rate for metronidazole is better. HOWEVER, it's obvious that metronidazole definitely causes serious neurological and psychiatric affects, so I guess we get to wait another 20 years for the FDA and doctors to get their heads out of their butts when it comes to Flagyl.
Did your brain fog ever go away?...I took augmentin 875 mg for two weeks and I feel like I have a weird blackness in my head and memory loss
Zack...augmentin is a completely different class of antibiotics from metronidazole. I'm not saying it didn't cause your brain fog but I wouldn't look at the rate of recovery between metronidazole and augmentin and expect a correlation. That being said, my brain fog improved greatly over time.
I took Flagyl for 2 weeks, my friend from Sweden, and I had to stop 4 days ago. My heart is still racing and I can't hardly walk because of fatigue. This is the worst feeling in the world. Specially my racing heart..... I hope you all get better and please don't take this evil medicine. I wonder how long do side effects last......God bless you all.
I was given a weeks dose of flagyl , I feel like I'm dying . I have tingling in my left hand , nausea and weekness. Sometimes I feel faint. And for someone who has slept through a earthquake, I'm having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep ... help please

Hello, i am just done with pylera due to the H. Pylori infection. But this treatment was like a nightmare and i am still feeling it even if it's done with. I have a dry throat followed with a heart burn and i belch a lots. My tongue turned green and i am suffering. So what i would like to know if you had kind of the same symptoms or no?? If yes, how long did it tale you to heal??
Kiki, it might be oral thrush (yeast infection of the mouth). There's medication for that but you have to see your doctor. Also, your gut bacteria probably took a serious hit with the antibiotics, so perhaps drinking kefir (a drinkable yogurt with lots of probiotics, very yummy) will help restore your gut flora. You can find kefir at the grocery store, with the milk products--it's usually the highest or lowest shelf.
Do not gnome these symptoms!! They indicate a systemic thrush overgrowth!! Talk to your Dr ASAP as this can wreak havoc K on your body, especially if you are immunosuppressed!! Believe me, it makes your life hell & can lead to death if not treated.
Shellbell41, what do you mean by "gnome" these symptoms? Not sure what slang that is--metronidazole can cause visible lesions to form on your cerebellum. You can see them with an MRI while taking the drug. That's not due to a yeast overgrowth. Sometimes, yes, candida can cause serious problems, not trying to downplay that. But metronidazole can cause many other problems that aren't related to candida, including acting as a neurotoxin to the brain and central nervous system.
My father just got finished taking metronidazole. He took 500mg 3 times a day for 14 days and is an absolute mess. He was treated for c diff with this drug. He is confused. He doesn't know the time or day. He is talking crazy! I can't explain it. It is almost like it gave him the onset of alzheimer's. I know this disease very well since my mother and father in law both had it. He keeps repeating himself and saying things that just don't make sense. I am so scared! He has been to the ER bc we thought he was having a stroke. Ct scan showed nothing and the MRI showed a miniscule blood vessel but they dismissed it. They are doing nothing for him! Help!
Hi, Lisa. Metronidazole can act as a neurotoxin on the brain, and most doctors don't know this (how they don't know this, I don't know--it's on the FDA's medication label for this drug). A confused state is one of the side effects, as well as anxiety, depression, etc. The fact that his MRI came up with little is a good sign. Most people do make a full recovery, but there's no way to guarantee this and his age might also play a factor as well. Just because the drug is out of his system doesn't mean the symptoms will quickly go away--this could take some time. Doctors might be able to treat the symptoms but not the underlying cause. He might benefit from a sedative of some sort--when dogs have metronidazole toxicity, they're given Valium (yes, I know--they treat dogs better when they have a bad reaction to this drug than they treat humans). A sedating type of antidepressant might help (I took mirtazapine, which helped me sleep). Just hang in there.
Hi Lisa
Im sorry about your father. I took flagyl (metrodinazole) , about 9 1/2 months ago, for six days. And i was a mess to, i still struggle. I was very confused to, my boyfriend told me that i talked very strange, like i had been drinking or something. And my short term memory was really bad. My father told me something, 10 minutes later i couldnt remember anything. He told me all this. I also was shaking bad, like i had parkinsons and much more. I still have bad dizziness and off balance, and head pain and eye problems and so on. Also fatigue. But i just wanted to tell you that i also was very confused and talking strange and didnt remember anything. But im better on thoose things. Just wanted to tell you that, so you have some hope. but it can take time for your father to get better.
Chantel, I had all of your symptoms, including uncontrollable muscle jerking all over my body which literally limited me to about 2 hours sleep a night. It has been going on for over two months. This can take many months to resolve & the only thing listed in the Mayo info is Niacin, which does nothing. I feel that my damage is permanent. I sincerely hope yours is not!! BTW, the Dr's never believe you! Make sure to call the FDA. They sent me a form to fill out for an adverse drug reaction. If we do not report these incidents nothing will be done .
I am still having these side effects, including the whole body muscle jerking. It has slightly improved over 2 1/2 months, but I feel my damage is permanent. I too look like a drunk, off balance, dizziness &I trying to stop my muscles from jerking.
