Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 35)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

My severe side effects of total body jerking dizziness nausea constantly vomiting headache numbness in tingling has lasted for over three months and slightly diminished . These are not unusual side effects of metronidazole it's like putting poison in your body and I believe and my doctors believe it did permanent central nervous system damage . Don't kid yourself nausea vomiting and diarrhea are the best side effects he could possibly have

Hi gubs 41,

Can i ask you how long it was since you took the medication? 2 1/2 months? I also had that muscle jerking. It also felt like electric pain or something going on in the body. And i was shaking so bad i could not hold my glass. But i have and also had so much terrible things going on in the body. Still feel like my body or feet are on fire, but better than in the beginning in all this. And for the first 4 months, i almost didn't sleep at all. The muscle jerking is better for me, and the shaking too, not gone but better. But other things is like it has been the whole time, dizzy and off balance all day. Extreme fatigue, and pain in the head and much more. But when i think of the first 4 -5 months, it was a nightmare. I still have hope to get better, but im also scared that some things are permanent. Just wanted to tell you that the muscle jerking is better for me, maybe you can feel some hope to hear that.

Hi Anna,

It has been 3 1/2 months since I stopped the metronidazole and I still continue to have the muscle jerking. The dizziness has not gone away, the nausea persists and a general just lousy feeling especially towards the end of the day. The muscle jerking becomes more obvious as it progresses through the day but my symptoms have not disappeared but slightly dissipated. My dr. blew me off originally and didn't believe that I was having the side effects, so there is actually no treatment for it other than fireman which does not help. I have taken multiple doses. I still have problems with memory, lose my balance frequently and I really really hope it gets better as my quality of life has greatly suffered. This medication should not even be on the market. If I were ever prescribed this medication again I would rather die. I don't mean to be dramatic but this has been the worst experience of my life. I sincerely hope that you improve and continue to get better. Best of luck.

I meant to say ignore spellcheck changed it . From specifically the metronidazole I have continuing total body muscle jerking dizziness falls constant nausea some bomb getting headaches over three months post ending this horrible medication . Because I have no spleen I got thrush because of the anabiotic's which is taken over two months to reverse and still is not perfect and it does affect organs in your body as well as systemically . I'm a critical care nurse have been in this business for 24 years and know the difference between the two .

Hi Again gubs 41
You are not to dramatic. I feel exactly like you. Its The worst thing i have ever experienced and still do. My life is also not The same, it has changed alot. And im afraid to never be The same and have to live like this. But im not giving up, and still hope that i Will be better one day. I have cried so much because off all this. And The doctors, i have been to alot off doctors, and like your doctor, They dont belive this is from flagyl. They only blame this to be anxiethy and depression. So i have giving up on doctors. I hope you can heal and feel good Again. Like i hope we all can. And like i tell everybody today, flagyl (metrodinazole) is a horrible poison and it should not been given to anybody. Maybe only in a life or death situation. I Will never take it Again, thats for sure.
I also had horrible nausea, lost alot off weight. But now i can eat more, but it took 6 months, to even have a little apatite Again. The nausea comes and goes, now for me. The worst thing is The off balance and dizziness, im afraid that this has been permanent. I also have neuropathy today, because off this horrible flagyl. Best off luck to you too and dont loose hope. sorry for my bad english

I got thrush after 2 weeks on the med.... I've got 1 pill to go and am really depressed, feel like something is sittin on my chest, very shallow breathing and I've lost 10 lbs because I can't eat more than a couple of spoonfuls at a time.

Now I'm wondering how I'll ever get back to the hyper person I have always been. Any ideas on how to rebuild the gut? If this med didn't kill the H. Pylori bacteria I don't know what to do...

I took 500 ml three times a day for diverticulitis. Finished the meds couple of days ago, but still having stomach ache, bloating and nausea. I feel terrible. Also the white yucky coating on tongue.
Anyone else out there experiencing same.
I feel like crap and I want to be over this. I thought when I finished meds the side effects would be gone. Don't have the neuropathy issue, but somewhat dizzy and tired..very!!!
Please share.

Hi, BJH. One thing that might help your gut is drinking kefir. It's just a fancy name for a drinkable yogurt--I like Lifeway Kefir the best. It has tons of really good probiotics, a lot more than regular yogurt. You should be able to find it at the local grocery, although it might be at the very top or bottom shelves.

Also, since you're not eating well, you might want to consider some Boost Plus Nutritional drinks. They are 340 calories per 8 oz bottle--very easy to get down and it'll help maintain your weight. Plus..nutrition.

As for the shortness of breath, I had that, too. It feels like there's a belt around your chest, constantly tightening. Best I can tell, the only treatment for that is time. Metronidazole goes everywhere--all over the body, the brain, and the lungs. So what you're feeling isn't that uncommon.

I'm off the meds for a week now. I still am weak all over but my brain is coming back and I no longer feel exhausted when I wake up but am still not doing anything. which is hard for someone who is hyper. I've been researching and it seems that after this awful poison to the body that one needs both pre and pro biotics and I found one that is a powder, says 400 billion on the bottle.. I'm 7 days into using it and eating green bananas and jicama which have prebiotics in them. So I think I'm on the mend, still fighting the thrush and an awful taste in the mouth. And I'm starting to have pain in my gut again....thinking this round of antibiotics may not have killed the bacteria...grrrhhh...

Lilly, the blurred vision is a disturbing sign. It could be from fatigue--this drug certainly causes it--but metronidazole can cause optic neuropathy. It's damage to the nerves of the eyes. If you're taking this for a non-threatening infection (something you can get another antibiotic to take care of), I'd suggest to stop right now and call your doctor and tell her you've stopped and you want something else. If it's for something more serious, I'd suggest you talk to your doctor first and tell her you want an alternative medication and see what she/he says. Mind you, doctors are reluctant to believe in adverse drug reactions (why, I don't know), so you might have to be firm that this concerns you and you want to try something else. I'm not a doctor, so you'll have to ultimately decide what to do here.

Hi had this drug given to me almost 3 years ago post op used for removal of wisdom tooth. Had I known that 3 years down the line I still have trouble I would never have taken it.
Came through the extraction fine but suffered a dry socket so dentist repeated same drug as the hospital gave.I vomited and vomited and then once I had healed we went off on holiday where I thankfully was in my own country however the doctor didn't consider that to be the problem and was looking for something much bigger but I knew all along this was to blame.
Ended up I had Endoscopy C.T scan Barium Needle Biopsy and a biopsy was taken of my stomach. Given FLAGYL O.M.G felt terrible then I went to Natural dispenser and she gave a large dose of Pro Biotic.
This drug caused severe problems so much so that written over in red letters on my hospital notes and others including dentist it MUST NOT BE GIVEN .
I have paid the penalty or taking and a person that never went to a doctor in 16 years was back yet again at doctor with same problem again now to undergo Bloods being done.
!THINK BEFORE YOU EVER USE BOTH THATS ALL IAM SAYING.

It would assume that one needs to get the name of a med and do the research before letting taking it.. I paid for the med before doing the research...

I'm not doing great yet and it's been a week since I finished... I have to be tested again in 30 days to see if the bacteria is gone...if not then I suppose another round of antibiotics is called for.. anyone have any ideas about a different one to take???

I was prescribed 500 mg 3x a day for 14 days to kill two AMOEBAS I detected in my gut (found these out in stool samples) as I would feel bloated each time I ate. Had planned a long 13 day wedding/vacation with family when the side effects set it. I was dizzy all of the time, dishoriented and collapsed on my husband once, lucky, otherwise it would have been the cement and felt very weak. I made it back home but a month later, I feel sick each time I eat, funny, but these were my symptoms before I started the med. Asked doctor for a recheck of my stool to make sure the amoebas had been killed & they weren't present anymore due to flagyl but I'm still dealing with stomach bloating. I do take PROBIATICS each day & im thinking possitive so my stomach discomfort goes away at some point

Been reading many posts. Have only been on metronide for 3 and half days at 200 mg only and yesterday really started to realise such bad side effects. Insomnia massive migraine that NOTHING relieves muscle stiffness especially in neck and shoulders despite massage dopey drowsy feeling like I am on a bunch of valium not an antibiotic and general feeling like a depressive fog though I am not sad just in pain coz of the migraine. This was all for tooth pain after attempted root canal. Didn't even have an abscess only severe pain. After reading about this drug am so annoyed that I was put on it and not just the amoxicillin which am also taking but am fine with always. Agree with everyone I know this is to kill bacteria that survives without oxygen so it targets certain things but seriously feel I would have preferred to suffer the pain a while longer in my tooth and try any alternative first b4 this drug. Will NEVER willingly go on this drug again unless they tell me I will die without it for a time. Not worth the side effects and believe me have tried a lot of different medications in my 35yrs of life due to bipolar post trauma and chronic back pain from breaking my tail bone. So yeah no way. This is by far one of the worst I I have ever experienced. I am even back on a mood stabilizer I don't like the withdrawals of if I stop it but at least no side effects while on it.

Please do not EVER take this unless you absolutely have to.. no one here is exaggerating. The side effects are horrid and they will make whatever issues u already have just harder to cope with. Feel for all those who took it for any length of time and I hope you improve. Stay positive despite the symptoms. The body has a way of fighting if we give it the good stuff too. Am grateful for any posts have read. I am stopping this med today and only staying on the amoxicillin. Going straight away to buy probiotics, gonna pump the garlic and vit c and drink 2 litres of water without fail. Want this stuff gone from my body. Take care all and hope they warn doctors and dentists about this drug a lot more seriously. Its a bad one. Poison isn't far from the truth.

Kind regards...

I would NEVER take Flagyl (Metronidazole) again. I would rather die. My side effects have lasted for over 4 months. I still have numbness, tingling, dizziness, falls, loss of balance, speech difficulties because of the constant muscle spasms, nausea, vomiting & it took 2 months of treatment to get rid of the thrush from killing all the good bacteria in my GI track. I also developed Gastroparesis (in a nutshell, my stomach does not pass food through) and now I am on more medications that are also neurotoxins. I am fighting metastatic liver cancer at the same time, and cancer is a breeze compared to the side effects from taking this drug. You are very lucky to have dodged the bullet, and I would recommend not taking another course of the medication. BTW, a 10 day course of 100mg 3x daily is the typical dose.

Wow... what a journey of torture!! I've learned a bit from my episode of taking it.. now I've got to wait until Oct 8 to be retested..then Oct 24th an endoscopy to check the hernia situation.. Meanwhile Thrush... a week of meds didn't kill it.. so now I'm using straight salt, I rinse my mouth and gargle a couple of times a day..and then I put salt on my tongue and hold it in my mouth for about 5 min and then rinse. It is getting better each day...so much better than the med which tasted nasty.
If I still have the H Pylori bacteria when I'm tested next I'm going to talk to the pharmacist who says he can substitute a med that won't make me sick...
