Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 66) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Not sure but I'm having some of the same side effects on my 3rd day.

Hi my friend. I know it's a pain but you'll notice a big difference on day 7, just hang tough. It will go away.

Thanks Tony. It's nice to hear what other people are going thru and have been thru.

Just an update, but I'm on day 4 at 12.5mg twice daily, and so far it's going quite well. The side effects have somewhat subsided (more tolerable), and I'm able to walk longer distances once again. I haven't gotten on the bike yet, though. In short, I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I plan on going three more days at this dosage followed by 6mg for another six or seven days and then cold turkey. If all goes as planned, I should be completely off of Metoprolol in about 10 days. I'll post an occasional update as I go along here.

Hi Bee! Yes, I've been taking magnesium along with other natural supplements on a regular basis. They do seem to be helping in keeping many of the side effects to a minimum. I haven't begun taking the Hawthorn yet, but I intend to do so once my pulse rate and BP stabilize to a point where I don't need to worry about either going too low. The good news is that my BP has generally stabilized to around 110/70, and I haven't had a single high blood pressure spike since I've gone to a 12.5mg dosage. I found that rather strange since I've still had many of the other side effects still occurring (chest pain, anxiety, dizziness, tingling, etc.). All in all, though, things are getting better.

Any one having issues with irregular heart beat? I'm on day 14 off Metoprolol and been feeling good. Last night about an hour after working out I starting getting a irregular heart beat. Finally stopped around midnight, but started again this morning. I've had them in the past, but normally don't last this long. Waiting for a call back from the nurse.

Bee thank you for your kind reply. I definitely think magnesium has significant benefits! The four supplements mentioned are good ones. I do take CoQ10 and have for years! I will definitely do more reading. My medical primary has ordered a magnesium blood test for my next visit this fall.
Enjoy this thread and the good comments. Very helpful! Thanks for the time taken to post replies!!

Yeah, Bee, I'm in full agreement with you about the pharmaceutical companies, and there's no doubt that I could be very long-winded with my thoughts regarding them.......LOL......but I'll leave that for a political thread. I'm not very fond of many doctors, either, especially the ones I came across during this last ordeal. I'm just thankful I found this site when I was looking for help. Most of the other threads were either non-active or just too old to comment on, so here I am! The information I've found here is indeed "priceless!" Perhaps most importantly, I found some good folks here who basically have the same issues in common, and it really helped to give me the confidence I needed at time when I pretty much felt all alone, or, perhaps that could be better worded "when most of the doctors thought I was nuts." All I knew for certain was that I needed to get off this drug, and you people gave me the strength to do just that! I really can't thank all of you enough.

Not sure if I'm rebounding or what is going on. Nurse is suppose to call me today to come to the clinic for a monitor. BP this morning was 143/97, which is still high for me since I've been running in the 120/80 range for about a month. Anxiety is starting to kick in so that could be affecting my BP. My symptoms are still like what I experienced my first time off (M) just not as severe, except I really didn't have much BP problems. Any encouraging words? :)

TCM
Are you still on BP meds? Or just the awesome foursome? Any known side effects taking it with BP meds?

Bee,
I was going back over some of the older post and read about the sea salt in a glass of water. Do you know why this method helps? Also been watching my salt intake so I was a little concerned.
Thanks Todd

Thanks Bee. I also read about sea salt awhile back. Celtic was the most recommended one. It's the main one I use. I have a cheaper brand but don't tastefully use it anymore! It might be good mixed with my natural weed killer compound! : )

Jumbo sorry to hear about B the bad days. Is it body aches or more? I've yet to try getting off the drug. My primary not in favor fur sure. My cardiologist who prescribed it for runs of rapid heartbeat has moved too far for me to travel without letting any of his patients know! How's that for patient care? Not sure if you're in US but medical care for aging isn't more than a 5 minute visit with the doctor now! So searching for new cardiologist now!
Hope you get over the bad days soon!

Hi Jimbo..sorry for typo in your name on my last post. I really think the Metop is causing my hair to get so much thinner. Not necessarily thyroid which seems ok. Doc ignored my comment about it last 2 visits. Thinking it's my younger than 73 years he's seeing now! As a retired advanced nurse practitioner, that I normally don't share, I know beta blockers are serious especially if needing any surgey/ anesthesia. Play heck with heart rate and BP. I saw many hundreds of patients over my 40+ years practice on that as well as too many other medications!! I've been taking 25 mg for past 4-5 years now. It can cause heart palps and rhythm disturbances itself! It was begun by my cardiologist at 50 mg which I promptly changed to 25 after feeling like a zombie and having a pounding heart beat! It was for runs of fast heart rate that he started it. Never diagnosed the cause of the heart rate changes! My other blood pressure med I myself discontinued recently then shared with my renal doc. He agreed definitely didn't need 2 meds lowering my blood pressure and affecting kidney function. My chore is finding another cardiologist now who might consider removing me from M. Or decreasing doseage. The Extended release you shouldn't cut in half because of the covering on it! Many don't realize that and can have heart irregularities from doing that. I did it, think I mentioned in earlier post, after my docs nurse said it was all right. Even questioned her specifically because I said it's extended release. So later ended up in ER with irregular heart rate! Was from cutting the 50 mg tablet in half most likely! It may be contributing to my joint pain in addition to my spinal stenosis and arthritis right presently. Wishing I could blame it for my suddenly gray hair! : ). I live in big city with too many choices of physicians. Keep us posted here. Good luck. Thanks for sharing so this b is longer than usual post.

Jimbo, Flagyl is one to be careful with Metoprolol also. Guess you are finished worth that round of antibiotics by now possibly. Sounds like that low dose of M is safe. Just watch for sure effects and check your BP maybe twice a day. Hope you get over sides effects. The antibiotics might be causing some of the symptoms or adding to them. Hope you are taking some kefir or at least eating some daily yogurt to maintain a better intestinal gut balance. Right now I'm concentrating on praying I don't need back surgey. Praying hard. M is rough along with anesthesia!! Keep in touch.

Punita just reviewing older posts. Not v sure if you're still following this thread. I hope you are doing well. This thread is definitely a help. Just wish the FDA paid more attention to problems patients have on the drugs prescribed. Primary docs seem to ignore our complaints!

I was on toprol 50 mg in am and 25 mg pm. I am now starting 12.5 mg morning. Nothing in evening. The thing that helped was 25mg of Ativan twice a day. Works wonders.

Todd, I sure wish there was something we could do to help. I do know that taking other meds while still suffering from anxiety from the Metoprolol made things extremely difficult for me. Multiple drugs just seemed to compound the issues even further. Somehow or some way I knew I just needed to get off the 'M' before taking anything else, and it's still worrying me. I've been fortunate enough to have two good days, but I still feel as though an anxiety attack could hit me at any moment.
