Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 65) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Does the ACV really help with your blood pressure? I too have been taking the metoprolol 50mg, and would love to lower my dose and gradually wean off. I have tried drinking the ACV in warm lemon water but was concerned about reaction with my bp meds. I do notice palpitations some times, but not all the time. I drink alot of water and work out at 5 times a week trying to lose 10-15 lbs. My concern is the rapid heart rate that the bp meds seem to help. Has anyone tried acupuncture or acupressure?
Update.... well I have been off the (M) for two months now and I have no idea what I could have now? Still waking up some nights with palps when I go to bathroom and feel aweful and have pain sometimes in the body.. I do not want to go to the doctor so I am doing acupressure and still taking all of my vitamins and supplements for hbp and heart.. the palps go down but I can still feel the adrenal rush and then this aweful dreadful feeling with pain .. Could this medicine really be doing this? I am scared to find out if there is something wrong with me because what will they do ? Give me more drugs...? Oh; and I found some utube videos on kinseology for the heart and have been doing that also with some EFT tapping.
just confused as to could I still be detoxing??
thanks for listening and please don't want to heart any scary stories lol
how should i begin to come off the drug metropolol 47.5 morning and night taken
i have cut down on metropolol by 25mg at night getting very bad arthritic symptoms in feet hands and knees has anyone else experienced this
hi tracey i am having to deal with arthritic symptoms especially at night the reason i want to stop taking M is for that reason however my symptoms appear to be worse in that area i have also experienced racing heart and irritability i am determined to get off this drug and am going to stick to it it has been a month now since i cut down half a tablet at night good luck with your journey linda
It's only the fifth day without M for me, after weaning for only a week. As I wrote a few messages back, Monday, two days ago, was rough.
But I want to thank the people who have posted here for some useful suggestions. In particular, L-Theanine and Hawthorne seem to have been very helpful in calming me down and getting rid of that "high anxiety" feeling. I also tried blackstrap molasses, but I'm not sure if that added anything; I was already feeling better from the other two.
To make matters more complicated, on Monday I also started a ketogenic diet, to try to get the weight off so the BP can take care of itself. This may have been ill-advised, since carbohydrate withdrawal can all cause edginess for the first week or so; but I'm determined to turn things around, so I'm still on it.
Today I'm feeling more "normal" than I have for some time. I had one very brief period of nervous arousal that lasted no more than two minutes: a feeling of fear, sweating, etc. I was able to just watch it and let it recede, like a wave. It hasn't recurred.
I'll post again as I go, but less frequently.
I have been taking Metoprolol for only a couple of months for the treatment of AFIB & I too had the tingling in the Left arms and my Left foot was hurting to the point of not being able to walk on it (not to mention all the other myriad of side effects) so, last night was my last dose of this crud... I pray I dont have a heart attack!
I have another question or two if someone doesn't mind answering them. First, I've been trying to wean myself off of Metorprolol since Tuesday (25mg to 12.5mg twice daily). The symptoms are worsening with each passing day. Is this common?
Secondly, the chest pain can be pretty horrendous sometimes. I've already visited the ER twice because of it, but they haven't found anything wrong. While I know some of you are having episodes of chest pain, I'm just wondering how severe do they get? To me it often feels as though I'm on the borderline of having a heart attack, but I feel like a fool going into the ER again. Is this just something that I have to endure and to tough out until I'm finally off of this nasty stuff? Thanks in advance!
Hi Bee......sorry I missed your last post before replying. I don't have anything wrong with my heart, so I should be good to go on some of the herbal remedies once I get off the Metoprolol.
I know what you mean about living indoors, though. For the past two weeks I haven't wanted to see anybody or do anything outside of my home. I'm an avid cyclist, too, but I don't dare ride for the fear of my heart acting up. In fact, I was riding my bike two weeks ago when I realized that something was awry with my health. It never occurred to me that it might be the meds until I had everything else checked out. I do know that I can't let this drug control my life, but perhaps that's easier said than done. Still, I'm hoping to completely free myself of it by next weekend.
Thanks once again for your thoughts, Bee! As the day goes on here, I've been contemplating another trip to the ER. I felt stable for a while, but the chest pressure and dizziness has become much more difficult to handle. Even my throat has tightened up while making it more difficult to breathe. I'm going to ride the day out the best I can, but I was really hoping that things would stabilize a little better today. You know, this is the very worst health issue I've ever had to experience, and I'm a healthy guy.
Well, Bee......you were correct in taking things a little more slowly. I was just fine all day yesterday until late afternoon when I just couldn't take the chest pressure any longer. It seems to be getting better, but it looks as though I'll likely be on about 6 to 8 mgs twice daily for another week or so before attempting to get off of the dreaded "M." For the most part, I can handle the anxiety, dizziness, shortness of breath, heart palps, etc., but the angina is downright scary. Even though my arteries all checked out perfectly about four years ago via a traditional heart cath angio exam, my cardiologist did set up another cardiac CT angiogram for tomorrow just to rule out any possibility of heart disease. Needless to say, I'm just hoping it's this med only that's causing the problems.
(lol) sorry but yeah kiddo, you totally have to back track thru that muddy path all over again to get back to where you were in the 1st place... Not sure how long you have been taking the M but, I suggest @one reading this TAKE CO-Q10... First thing in the AM I take 3-325 mg aspirin (I have thick blood so, listen to your own body here), 300 mg CO-Q10 & 400 mg Magnesium (I buy from Doctors Nutrition) Drink Green tea & H2O ...walk as much as you can at a comfy pace, rest when your body tells you to & stay away from stress. This would be a great time to look into Yoga. I haven't YET but, "Lord willing I am soon." I have been walking started slow & increased... After 5 days my L. arm and leg/feet are a little tingly/jello but I feel like a human again.. PS, I was only on this crud for 2 1/2 months for AFIB & I am still saying prayers for those on here who I am quite sure are going through hell getting off of this poo poo stuff.
Hi Sherrie! Metoprolol was originally prescribed to me for mild hypertension. Through diet and exercise, I've since lowered my BP and PR to a point where I no longer need BP medicine. In fact, one of my doctors felt that my low pulse rate (upper 40s) and low BP rate could potentially become dangerous, so he thought I should get off of it altogether. Of course, it's much easier said than done.
Bee, I spoke with another doctor today who thought I should wean off slowly since it appears I'm very sensitive to the drug. I guess some have it easier simply because their sensitivity level isn't quite the same. I'm just upset with myself for not checking into this drug before I started it. The information was out there, but I guess I put some unfound faith into my doctor.
So, I guess the slow process begins, but for the life of me I never saw this coming. It's just odd how the quality of life has just sunk from from an all-time high to an all-time low. It's really quite depressing, to say the least. Most importantly, though, I need to build the strength to get beyond this.
Michael I forgot to mention to you to research L-Arginine "and then get you some of it." I personally know of Doctors who take this for their own Heart Health. K, didn't want to leave out even a tidbit jic it might help ny1 on here ... ciao
Bee, just to clarify, you started the L-Arginine and the Hawthorn after you were off of the Metoprolol, correct? One problem I'm having at the moment is that my BP and pulse rate have been too low while on M, so it seems I shouldn't be taking supplements such as L-Arginine along with M since it could potentially lower my BP and pulse even further. I fully intend to start on the L once I'm off the M, though.
Be careful cutting the Metoprolol in half if it is ER(extended release). There is a coating on it. I did it with a 50 mg dose was dropped to 25mg. Ended up in ER with tachycardia!! I am a nurse and the doctors nurse v told me I could do it!! I questioned it and followed her advice. Wished I had not when I ended up in hospital for a ER visit!
I have a question for whomever may be able to answer it: Once you realized that your Metoprolol (or any beta blocker) medicine was wreaking havoc on your system, did the side effects or withdrawal symptoms essentially incapacitate you? In other words, did you suddenly find it difficult to climb stairs? or even walk short distances without feeling chest pain and shortness of breath? I literally feel as though I'm going to have a heart attack if I do practically any activity at all, and it seriously makes me wonder if I may have an underlying condition that I'm unaware of. It seems I have absolutely no energy whatsoever. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Sherrie.....thanks for your thoughts as well! I really needed to hear these tonight, for I haven't been as positive about this as I should be. I just know that I have a high sensitivity to drugs in general, so I'm still a bit frightened over the notion of actually going cold turkey once I've weaned myself enough to do so. But, I'll get there eventually!
Tony, once again, that's some great info! Thank you! I have one more question if you don't mind: how long did it take for you once you started the weaning process to feel your strength coming back? I have some commitments coming up in the later part of June that'll require me cancelling them if I don't feel that I'll be ready for them by then. One month ago it would've been no problem, but now I'm pretty useless when it comes to moving around. I lose energy very quickly, and my symptoms reveal themselves very quickly when I become even remotely active (climbing stairs, very short walks, etc.). I'm also down to around 3/4 of a 25 mg tab twice daily (about 18 or 19 mg), and I plan to go to a 1/2 tab (12.5 mg) by the end of this week.
Tony, you're providing more help than you can possibly imagine. Thank you once again!
It does frighten me when you say "unless I'm feeling a heavy pressing feeling" in my chest, because that's exactly what I'm feeling each and every time I exert the slightest amount of energy (again, climbing stairs, walking, etc.). I've already been to the ER three times for this, and they've detected nothing wrong with my cardiovascular system each time. The cardiac CT angiogram along with x-rays also detected nothing. As a result of all these tests, I've just been under the assumption that one of the many Metoprolol side effects I'm feeling are of the 'angina' variety, but it's so difficult to know for certain. Needless to say, it's very frustrating and quite frightening.
Regarding the notion of weaning, I sense that your schedule might be similar to what I'll likely try. I've been at about 18mg for four days now, so I'll probably stay there for another few days. I'm meeting with a new cardiologist tomorrow (didn't care for the first one), so hopefully he'll have some insight on the matter. The big problem, though, is finding a sympathetic doctor who truly understands the nature of this drug. Of the many doctors I've already seen in the past few weeks, only one ER doctor openly admitted that she had some knowledge of the adverse effects Metroprolol has had on some people.
Thanks again, my friend, and don't be surprised if you find another question or two from me, for you're definitely giving me some much-needed confidence!
