Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 67) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
According to the following article, Metoprolol reportedly can cause memory loss:

Tony have you used any natural anxiety meds that have helped you with it. I am drinking a lot of camomile tea.
Has anyone used Suntheanine version of Theanine?
From what I can gather, there isn't much difference between Suntheanine and L-Theanine. Both should work just the same. I've been using the Enzymatic brand of Suntheanine, and although it effects seem to be rather subtle, it does seem to help my minor anxiety issues.
For what it's worth, over the weekend I found that the Hawthorn supplement hasn't been agreeing with me. The primary side effects have been dizziness and nausea, and once I quit taking it, I felt much better. Between the withdrawal effects of dizziness caused by the 'M' while being further accentuated by the Hawthorn, I found it difficult to decipher which was really causing the problem, but now it seems that it was indeed the Hawthorn that was inducing a bit more dizziness along with a bit of vertigo. All in all, though, it seems that my days are finally at a point where I'm feeling a bit better with each passing day. Man, getting off the 'M' has been a tough ride.
Todd......how are you doing? Are things getting any better?
I had a bad weekend with chest discomfort and tightened neck. Finally went to ER to make sure nothing was wrong. All test came back good and got to stay the night. Doctor at the hospital thinks my stress is irritated my esophagus causing the discomfort in my chest. Makes sense with what I've dealt with lately. I had no issues all day yesterday in the hospital of coarse I was on anxiety medicine. Back at work today doing pretty good....just keep telling myself that I'm ok. I think 99.9% of mine at this point is stress. I try to blame everything on my heart and test after test tells me it is fine. I have to stay positive I think of other things and last resort take something for anxiety.
Just want to add that I am still dealing with some dizzyness and vertigo. I think it is triggered by anxiety. The few times I can stop thinking about the bad things and dont feel stressed I have no systoms.
A controlled carbohydrate diet can most times eliminate acid reflux.
Todd glad to b hear things seem to be getting better. Tincture of time I guess. Keep us posted on your status. I'm headed to Neuro for back surgey consult so doubtful I'll be posting much here. I still know my thinning hair is from Metoprolol. Nearly 3 years taking it. Hoping my new cardiologist I must v find will change it or remove it. It's for my blood pressure, tremor and palpitations. Must be powerful if it years 3 problems!! Oh, it's also given for migraines!
Do you think I can just stop the Benzos? I took 25 mg of Xanax on 7/3 then one on 7/5. I took 1/2 Xanax on 7/8. Then on 7/9 & 7/10 I took .25 mg of Clonazepam at bedtime and .5 of Clonazepam today divided into 2 (.25). Has my body built up a tolerance with those small doses? I have Hydroxyzine (antihistamine) that my doc gave me for anxiety that I may use tonight. All this stuff about benzos is scaring my. My pdoc never rx Xanax and could not understand why they would give it to me at the hospital. He said Clonazepam is the least addictive and he does a taper no cold turkey. I was so upset when I was given all that Metoprolol in the hospital. I told them I did not do well and it makes me anxious. They told me that is all they had to reduce my heart rate. I don't know what I'm suppose to do with physical symptoms of shaking, muscle twitches, anxiety, and adrenal surges when I wake, or that tingly sensations. I plan on buying Natural Calm magnesium. Thanks for your inputt.
Lol oh no, I wasnt referring to metoprolol as snake venom. I was referring to lisinopril. It actually does come from the jaracara snake or at least the snakes venom was the basis for its discovery. To what extent is hard to say. So i refer to it as venom because of how it effected me. It felt like I had been snake bitten. It caused me serious pain within minutes and continued for days. And some people have reactions to it which seem very toxic. It even has side effects which can cause terrible abdominal pain and fluid leakage.
Im sure there are people who take lisinopril without incident but I'm not one of them. My body reacted with it almost instantly and I'd be scared to take it again.
Metoprolol was also developed out b of shake venom studies! I brought an article in for my doctor to read! If nothing else we can keep our doctors thinking!! Let's them know we can use our great matter! Keeps them honest.
My PCP office now draws blood for v their v patients via Labcorp. I used it for my preop but routine will continue with Quest because they publish and share report with patients. Labcorp isn't set up for that yet. I think we should have access to the results not wait until we seev our physician.
Keep up the good work. Are you a pharmacist?
Pat...thank goodness you caught that early on! I'd report your reaction trio the FDA website that's wants to hear about patient problems. That's how they change labeling usually!!
That dose must be incorrect. Its 50mg or 25 mg of the Metoprolol succ ER..
Jimbo, Tony glad all going well ,welcome Boydage. Agree Metnis culprit in my hair loss. Will try to get off after my surgery. No time to be changing drugs when going under anesthesia!! Nice to see some new folks here too.
Boydage I bet my 25 mg disecreally isn't 25mg! Enjoy both me ride adrenalin high! If not for surgery I'd be changing my Metop started for tachycardia!
Jimbo, thanks for the confirmation...ugh...on top of everything, my back surgery resulted in nerve damage so I now walk with a slight limp...I cannot believe that these meds are still on the market? And my doctor never put 2 and 2 together with the cough and sinus infections one after the other with the meds? After a couple of years on, I was diagnosed with asthma. Again, not being a doctor, how would I have known that it was these meds?
I've been on 25mg of Metoporol for over 2 weeks from 50mg after 10 years. I seem to be doing ok, but once a week, I'll have some anxiety. I'm thankful for the theanine, magnesium and omega 3's. Has anyone tried taurine?
Hi Jimbo: thanks for the congrats...it's taken about 2 years and I still have more to go. And congrats to you on the 30, and all of the lifestyle changes you've made.
Can I ask how long it took before you went from 3 hours to 7 hours of sleep?
Hi Tony: thanks for the easy to follow explanation...glad it's working for you
And is there anything I can take while I am weening off so I can clean my liver
Debbiepa50 thanks for that but can I eat all that while I am in metoprolol are is it good to eat that while weening off of it
Hi Anita: So, I went from 12.5 to none on Sunday. I've been completely off for 5 days...jeeeeez- anxiety, a big dose of depression including some crying, and of course the boomerang Bp...but the highest it's been is 120ish over 70ish...kind of all over the road...and my pulse seems lower 50 to mid 50's...and seems to go lower when my pressure goes higher. I feel a little better today...I couldn't agree with you more on the poison...I was afraid to go off, but having the support of everyone on here helped me try. I'm hoping the worst is over, but I doubt it...I just try to tell myself that every day will improve...you're 30 days off...I wish I was. I keep picturing the light at the end of the tunnel. It soooo helps to hear all of you guys say that the more time you're off, the better you feel. I almost had a part of a pill last night...but then I thought about you guys...and did not...how can doctors put people on this stuff and not warn them that they'll need to fight withdrawl? I know...at the end of the day, it's a business.
