Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 121)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

I have no idea why my. Doctor put me on this stuff. My bp is bottomed out(which it already was) and my testing heart rate went from 48 to 40. I have a valve issue but nothing to worry about at this time. I have gained weight and feel like crap 24 hours a day. Light headed, can't sleep, fuzzy, lethargic. I'm taking 50gms a day since Feb1,2014. I'm getting off this stuff!

Your situation sounds like mine. heres my history in a nutshell. On Jan 28th 2014 I had an afib episode, went to emergency & was cardioverted. I had been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea prior. Got put on Metoporolol 25 2x a day. took a few weeks to get used too. then I got my Cpap. Its working great..Did the stess test, heart was good, did the echocardiogram, heart looks good. I think the cpap is working. with all the good results I asked my dr,(who seems not to give a crap about seeing me btw) why if everything is good am I on these meds. She then said I can ween off of the Metoprolol. half 2x a day for 7 days then half of 1 a day for another 7. I have yet to do that. Im a lil scared of side effect s or having another afib episode. How is your progress? Id like these docs to figure out wtf I have afib in the first place. Hoping its the sleep apnea which I been treating. Peace

Evidently it can. From what I've read that's a common side effect of a lot of BP meds. I found several articles about it. Here is one:

Hope this helps. :)

Side effects of metropolol, I have been on metropolol for 15 years, 50 mg daily. Only side effect has been impotency. Has anybody else experienced this ? If so did potency return ? I will discontinue it if it does.

I've been off of it for a few months now. I only took it for a month but I still have tightness in my chest. The doctor doesn't think it's from that but I never had that before. It does raise triglycerides and my blood pressure went way up also when trying to wean off. The blood pressure is better now.

I've been on it a little over a week. 25 mg 2 times daily for afib. A couple days ago started feeling a tightness in my chest. Cardiologist said cut dose in half. I did. ....and planing continuing to do so till I. Am off this! I feel worse now between the tightened chest and the dizziness than before with the Afib!!!

I had issues coming off of metoprolol as well ;tapered dosage for 10 days then stopped.Pulse rate, blood pressure shot up very high and a lot of anxiety as well.My cardiologist never told me about withdrawal. He also did not start me on another med;I found out later this was my main issue, not having another med to start on immidately. It took me about 2 months to feel almost normal.Good luck!sorry you didn't enjoy holiday because of this.

I was put on Metroprlol Tartrate on Sept. 30 for afib brought about by dehydration. I was taking 12.5 mg am and pm. On Oct 30 I was told I could tot rate down and eventually come off. I very gradually reduced my dose by 6 mg for 2-3 weeks at a time. I took my last dose on Dec. 6. On dec14, I experienced a pounding/ racing heart. Doc told me to take 12mg and so I did. On 12/19, I experienced a similar episode while driving and took another 12 mg to slow my heart rate. The episode passed in 15 min. Very early on the morning of 12/22, I awoke with the same thing. Thinking it was rebound, I just rode out the episode without taking anything. Now I feel awful with periodic rises in heart rate/BP and feelings of panic. I take it this is normal. How long will it last? This so terrifying. I felt lousy while on the drug and I feel horrible now. I'm pretty sure my doc won't believe me when I tell him it's withdrawal, even though I did so gradually. I do deep breathing when I feel chest tightness, etc. hits and it eventually passes. Today I got real dizzy right after lunch and had to cancel my Xmas plans. Help!

Don't stop cold turkey. Taper off over eight weeks. You are physically dependent and must taper slowly.

CZ, I did a search and found a lot of useful information on Metoprolol and tremors. I'm unable to post the link. There is a chart by age group of people who experience tremors on this drug. I'll skip the younger ages. Ages 50-59--21.35% experience tremors, Age 60 plus-62.02%. So it seems more common in your age group.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone developed hand tremors while withdrawing from Metaprolol Tartrate.?

I have been taking Metaprolol Tartrate (100 mg once daily) for the past two years with no side effects. Previously took Toprol. I have CAD, had a triple bypass 7 years ago and all my vitals are fine today. I also take Losartan and generic Lipitor (80 mg). My average blood pressure is 115/75 and my resting heart rate is in the 50's. I am a 75 year old man, exercise regularly (walk 2-3 miles a day) and my diet is healthy. My cardiologist approved my weaning off Metaprolol.

Three weeks ago, I started taking 50 mg 2x daily. This week I cut back to 50mg once a day. Two weeks ago I started getting hand tremors. They have gotten worse each day. I have no other symptoms or side effects. My BP is still in my normal range.

Anyone have an answer or suggestions, other than seeing a neurologist ?

Hi everyone. ... well I'm finally of my heart monitor after two weeks. My doctor said they found that I have s-v-t where my hearts electronic sigals are messed up. I was just wondering if the meteprolol has caused this because while weening off or anytime with taking these pills my heart would beat fast also... does anyone have any experience with is? All and all my blood pressure is fine but the anxeity is crazy I didn't now anxeity can cause physical pain with it or that's what my doctor says because every unusaul pinch or pain I feel really scared... I finally called a therapist to talk to and see him next week does anyone also no anything about all this cause I've never went through anything like this .... any help would be very helpful. ...

God bless to all...
And hope everyone is getting better.

Hi Britni, sounds like you're experiencing the same type of things that a lot of us have. It's a very dangerous drug. I stopped taking it but I would never try to tell you what to do. I'm feeling a lot better now but it takes time. I got off of them in September. I still have unusual tightness in my chest that I didn't have before I took them but my blood pressure has been OK the last few days. I had several episodes of racing heart and very high blood pressure. My heart seems to have calmed finally. I also had a few days when I thought I was over the worst of it and then it started again. Hopefully that's all behind me now. I hope this helps. Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

Britni, please go to the doctor or ER ASAP. I just went through the same thing two weeks ago and almost had a heart attack. My doctor weaned me off metoprolol way too quick and I became very I'll.
Just my two cents...I would go to the ER. Keep us posted.
