Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 120)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

To #157 bb : your post got my attention about the ear, ringing, first my ached for one day, since then my research shows that it could be from an inner ear problem, nothing will cure it except two months of waiting. It will cease. I had vertigo, room never stopped spinning, sick to stomach. I also have stopped Metoprolol ,been on it 14 yrs, afib,bp was crazy on it,better in 5 days off. I put ear drops in,feels better,no moving head side to side fast, look straight ahead, try to use texting less. Tryl this,Dr.won't help, they just write script.

I am #165 above and have finally begun to feel more like myself. Getting off this drug was at least as bad as when I started. Maybe it was easier because I wasn't on it for too long, but I'm glad it's over. Fight thru all the awful symptoms to get off & eventually it will get better & you will feel more like yourself.

Stopping was worse for me! Be very careful and listen to your pharmacist.
I took over 2 months to get off it and had side effects the whole time and even two weeks after i was completely off of them.
Nasty stuff!
Good luck Michael!

Although I was asymptomatic a heart cath recommended I have my aeortic valve replaced, which I did in mid april due to stenosis attributed to a lifelong murmur. Have been on metropolol 25mg ER tabs taken right before bed. I have the weirdest vivid nightmares on this. I have kept myself in good shape and have never had high bp. There are some days I am so fatigued I can't get out of bed and everyday at least twice my heart pounds like it's ready to jump out of my chest. After relaying this to my cardiologist, he told me to stop taking it. He didn't say anything about weaning off the drug but my pharmacist told me I had to. Am trying to space out the time between doses at increasing daily intervals. Yesterday was fine after skipping nightly dose. After taking it again last night, I had a recurrance of the same side effects, breathing difficulties, heaviness in chest, nightmares, that I hadn't experienced in weeks. Quitting will be hard.

I was on metroprolol tartrate for two months, and it was hell. Heart palpitations, panic attacks, upset stomach, sleelessness, low heart rate.

In answer to your question, yes, what you are experiencing is common with this drug. My withdrawal, even after a careful taper, was pure hell. I wish I could be of more help; I gritted my teeth through withdrawal without any other meds for the anxiety and panic. This stuff is poison.

Hello,
I have posted before and have been off Metoprolol for 2.5 weeks now. The first 1.5 weeks were fine but this last week has been hell. I am having racing heart and panic attacks... inner tremors and palpitations. I am also on Lorazepam 1.5 per day but it has not been helping much. I ended up taking 2.5 yesterday and 2.0 two days ago to get over the anxiety and other symptoms. Does anyone know if this is normal with Metoprolol withdrawal?

I was given a EKG after seeing two doctors, was in AFIB with failing heart beat. (I had been suffering with this for at least 3 months maybe longer off and on) Primary doctor was no use, after I got to the hospital, and my heart rate was converted through electric shock I was prescribed Diltiazem ER 240mg with Amiodarone 200mg, and Xarelto and told to come back in 3 months after many shocking side effects, was told to come in then was given Multaq 400 mg one for AM and one for PM. That was almost as bad, but still could not tolerate, then was the given Metoprolol scc er 25mg. still felt like my heart was struggling to beat, short of breathe, bend over to pick something off the floor, felt like blood was going to pop through my head. Blurred vision, dry eyes, heart hurt, short of breathe, When I would take my blood pressure it was high, 165/94 but heart rate 53. Doctor was trying to hit two birds with one stone. What is wrong with this picture?? Doctors just keep prescribing till something works, meantime your body is going through hell trying to keep up.

All of this stuff is poison, and I believe your body will get used to it, someday, maybe, but in the mean time it's killing you. Former smoker and I remember the first time I smoked a cigarette, I coughed my head off...made me sick at my stomach, but the more I tried the easier it got. Yes your body does adjust, but just like cigarettes, it's killing you and your quality of life. And of course we will see a lot of legal suits in the future, Your body is telling you something. I don't know how some people can take this stuff, and the doctors, well they just keep writing prescriptions. (Notice all the drugs ads everywhere) Find another way if at all possible. Diet, yoga, exercise..no alcohol, sodas, sugar.

I am back to report. My last post was Oct. 30, 2013. I was #80, now there have been 165 posts. I contended with that horrible withdrawed for at least a year. And I still am not the person I was before I started taking the poison, Metoprolol. In March of that year my husband got sick and passed away in May. I was not able to even help take care of him when I was needed so bad. During that time ( in September)as I said in my last post that I just kept thinking it was the withdrawal when I got to where I couldn't walk across the room without stopping to get my breath. I had to go to the emergency room it was blood clots on my lungs. If I had my way I would not take another pill for anything but a doctor will scare you to death telling you what might happen if you don't. I was a very abled person before I started taking that awful stuff and just with in a year you would think I aged 10 years. I am very careful about taking any medications without checking them out but really I don't think that does any good. Why can't someone get hold of this and do something about it like they do a lot of the medicines they finally have taken off the market.

I was diagnosed with high BP and originally was put on Lisinopril. Had to stop that as it put me into a severe depression which I never had before. Next was several drugs, Verapazam, CartiaXT, stopped them due to leg swelling, etc. Now the dr put me on Lopresser generic. Been on that since October 2013 @ 50mcg x1/day. Had all kinds of bad symptoms - chest tightness, breathing ability, loss of acuity, memory lapses, muscle pain - the works. Decided to get rid of it cold turkey. Doctors never listen to your bad reactions to drugs or tell you that it doesn't cause your symptom. Then why do you have it now, when you didn't before? Having all the above symptoms listed by others above. Going to tough it out. Already noting an increase in less fuzziness of thought, memory better, hoping for more positive results as time goes on. I'll take whatever risk is involved to feel better. This stuff is crap!

I started taking metoprolol 20 years ago and Prozac . I had a bad itchy rash, but didn't realize I was allergic to Metoprolol, so I just kept taking it. I think I developed many of the bad side effects, now I have developed lupus. Dr. just put me on RA meds.I am not going to take them. Dr's don't listen to what you say. I am slowly weaning myself off the metoprolol. I was wondering if my symptoms will go away.

I kind of have the same symptoms. I've been on Metoprolol 25mg twice a day for nearly 2 years. Started seeing a new doctor and told how i did not like this stuff, so he had me wean off of it and switched me to lisinopril for high bp. So slowly over a months time through the month of april 2014 i halved the dose every week and on april 31st i took my last pill, that was about 2 weeks ago, didn't feel anything at first then last wednesday when i was just sitting I all of a sudden got really dizzy, tried to lay down but I was still dizzy, went to bed hoping it will be gone the next day but it wasn't and now i was feeling feverish/nauseated i really didn't like it. Went to walgreens and got Dramamin to treat motion sickness since thats what i thought and it did help though I can still kind of feel it, feels as the blood pumping in my head just makes me dizzy every pump i feel and of course I noticed my vision is a bit blurry mostly on my right eye, so I covered it and i admit it does help me maintain balance and a bit better. So yeah thats what i've been dealing with so far. I'm glad it is a common symptom for those also getting off of the pill. Sounds like some people were able to get better in about a weeks time so if thats true for me then I should be feeling a whole lot better in about 1 or 2 days time and if not i'm scheduled to see a doctor in 2 weeks anyways and tell her my sad situation.

I feel good seeing that i am not alone but sure feel bad that so many are experiencing it.
I got on it last November for High BP along with Benazepril and Amlodapine. I was a zombie. Got off Amlodapine 2 months ago as it has the worst side effect reports. Some palpitations over 2 weeks and my head was a thinking a bit better but still Brain fog and tired. So i got off Benazapril next...easy and didnt notice anything at first but started getting anxiety more and more until it was really bad. Thank God i had some Ativan to calm me down. Now when i say anxiety it was different than what i would call anxiety before the pills. This was a different beast all together. It didn't start with my head but with my body. Eyesight gets weird, Depersonalization, tremors...then my mind starts to freak a bit wondering what the heck is happening. Ativan would calm me right down. So i started to get off 50mg 2x a day. Cut up pill to take 3/4 or 37.5 - 2x per day and started to get palpitations as it wore off. After 5 days i went down another 1/4 to 25 mg - 2x a day and palpitations are crazy scary as it wears off or i wake up from sleep. I started taking half a Benazapril again as i read that Metoprolol suppresses adrenaline but that if you have a strong body it can send signals to pump more adrenaline and the ACE inhibitor Benazapril tells it not to pump it up. It does help some but if i didnt have it i would go to the ER...so i feel for you folks. It makes the anxiety worse because it scares the crap out of you. And ear ringing can be brutal.
So my question is how much longer do i take to get off this demonic drug. It is hard to make a decision when your afraid the wrong decision can make you die from this black box drug ( you can die from stopping it too quick)? I hope i can Heal and get better as i have never experienced this stuff before and i have been in some pretty extreme situations in life....but this tops it. Comments and ideas are welcome!

I went off mine.
Haven't felt right since I went on in Feb.
My ear. Started ringing on it and STILL IS almost 3 months. NO ONE KNOWS WHY!
Still are dizzy at times. Comes when things move up or down, like scrolling on my phone or computer or I quickly look sideways. Or try to focus on something . Been to more doctors in the past months than in 25 yrs!!! I believe it was the meds That started it all . I am @ my wits end. Drs look at me cross eyed like I am crazy!

My doctor put me on metoprolol for pac's not so bad on the medication. Then found out I was off for a work conference at high altitude and did some research about beta blockers and altitude. Wasn't great. I was on 50mg twice a day. My doctor doubled it to 100mg twice a day which I only did for one day. Then I was taking 150mg a day then the last 2 days I have only take 100mg a day. My doctor told me to just stop and go onto avapro (which I've been on for years for high BP) but a little nervous to stop cold turkey after reading all this. I don't know what to do!!!
