Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 122)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Ive been taking 100mg of mteoprolol a day for about 5 yrs now for tachycardia. I dont have any insurance and usually go to an indian clinic to get my scripts. Well i ran out of pills the day before thanksgiving not even thinking. Its now been 4 days and my hearts pounding, hands shaking, keep getting really dizzy, and just feel wiped out. My whole body feels like its shaking. Is this normal? Im wondering if ive gotten this far if i should just stick it out and try to quit it all together but the clinic opens back up tomorrow. Does this get any better?!

I have ni interest in anything and I have to fight myself to get out of bed in the morning... I feel scared most of the day and always need someone around me.. should I just go to the doctors and have him give me pills again? I was never depressed or anything before all this flipped my life around...its this something that will pass? Any info will help ty....

It sounds perfectly normal for anxiety and depression (sadly a side effect of this drug). It sounds to me your dealing more with anxiety and panic. I had the same fun combination. You can get a sudden fear for no reason and irrational thoughts which triggers the anxiety and panic. It is VERY scary to say the least! I was dealing with depersonalization 24/7 at one time also.... the crazy thing is depersonalization will go away when you just dont let it bother you. It is a natural occurrence that helps the brain deal with stress. But people like us who are over sensitized look for it and cause the symptom to stick around. Here is a website that literally saved me: anxietycentre.com get on there and pay the $10 to become a member. First go to chapter 9 and understand your symptoms then go chapter through chapter. I actually talk to one of their cancelers weekly... it was a huge help. I never want to go on medication again and was afraid a psychiatrist was going to put me on one. These people all dealt with the same things we are whether it was from a drug induced anxiety or just natural. JMO... I believe we are anxious people to begin with and this pill just brought the demon out :-( But that site and the cancelor has been a huge help for me. But just so you know... your not going crazy nor can go crazy from these awful feelings... they can just bug the heck out of your life until you learn how to deal with them so you can calm your nervous system down.

Hi.. tracy
Yeah I think it did the same to me. I'm going on 3 weeks now. My body feels much healthier but my mind doesn't feel the same. Nothing actually feels the same I think in a way I'm depressed and have anxiety and depersonalization... I just keep telling myself that my mind is playing tricks on me. My depersonalization last all day and night. I'm thinking of seeing a professional. I'm just scared that they will think I'm crazy. Is this a common thing ?

Last week my doctor changed my nighttime blood pressure medicine to Metoprolol. I had been taking Bystolic and was doing fine but asked my doctor if there was a generic because of the cost, but there is no generic for Bystolic. I started having a lot of problems with my hands itching and feeling bad. I looked up side effects of Metoprolol and the itching is one of the "rare" side effects. I didn't realize until I did this research that Metoprolol is the generic for Toprol which I had tried to take years ago and couldn't. I felt lousy so my doctor changed me to Bystolic. I guess I'll just have to pay the higher price for Bystolic because I can't stand feeling this way. I've only been taking Metoprolol for five days. Do I still have to bee weaned off or can I just stop taking it and go back to Bystolic?

I recently went off Metroprolo after being on it for 13+ years.I had many issues with weaning process;urgent care&holter monitor.I am on 2 new BP meds and BP is under control;heart rate is still high.I had back pain and just started ear acupuncture and biofeedback.I also started wearing a pain patch and will try a formulated cream for OA.I will pick up scrip tomorrow for muscle relaxant to be taken up to 3 times a day. Also trying I Rest Yoga for anxiety and stress;should help heart rate&depression as well.Good luck to everyone trying to wean off Metroprolo;its a terrible drug for so many of your body's systems.

LOL Travis... I thought I lost it too at first. That feeling is crazy. It is actually a very normal symptom of anxiety.... as your body and mind calms that will go away. I was having depersonalization sometimes almost full days. Some people are just very sensitive to medications... and beta blockers do cause anxiety in us sensitive people and the side effects are very real. Just remind yourself depersonalization is a normal symptom of anxiety and medication and it cannot hurt you and do some slow relaxing breathing the feeling will diminish over time :-) I honestly believe the beta blocker brough out some underlying anxiety issues that I had..... it messes with your adrenaline which triggers anxiety. I now work with a therapist and been off beta blockers since June. I still am experiencing anxiety but on a functioning level... when on the beta blocker I was not functioning at all.

Hi Susan, I have had anxiety. I'll have to check out the meaning of depersonalization that Tracy mentioned. I'm almost scared to. My heart still races occasionally which could be caused from the anxiety. There are so many side effects of this drug that it's hard to know what is a side effect and what isn't. The bottoms of my feet hurt very bad after I've been sitting for awhile. Is it the joint pain that is a side effect or plantar faciitis that I suddenly developed around the same time I started this drug. Who knows.

Hi... susan
I've been completely off little more then a week now. I have had the rapid heart rate where it spikes up to 140 at sitting which is very scary, dizzy, scared anxious feelings, feeling like I can't beath. That has gottin better. I only have been taking it for two mont hs and it has really messed with my head . Lately I've just been feeling like I'm dreaming or things in a way aren't real or just different. Maybe its because I was so messed up taking the meds for a while my mind has to get use to reality. Has anyone f elt this way?

Hey Michael it could be a side effect. My back has been hurting since I went off it, and my blood pressure and heart rate did go up on Friday to where I was dizzy. and on Saturday my heart rate was racing. Today I felt nothing. You just have to be careful with exercising until you know that these side effects will go away.

Susan, I haven't experienced back pain. I looked up the side effects and they have them listed in 3 categories. More common, less common and rare. Lower back pain is listed under the rare side effects.

My doctor just took me off Metoprolol and the second day I noticed my heart rate and blood pressure up. does this medication also give a side effect of back aches. Also today I had to take a half an ativan to relax my anxieties and a baclofen to help relax my muscles. Have any of you experience back pain after going off this drug

Hi Tracy & Travis, Tracy that's interesting. I notice lately I have anxiety pretty bad. Never thought about that being a side effect of the drug.

Travis, I started feeling better in a couple weeks after getting off the metoprolol and my blood pressure was actually good for 2 or 3 weeks and then suddenly went back up for no reason. It's been good and bad, since then. Some of the side effects started after I got off.

Travis... you sound exactly how I was :-( I been off this awful drug since June (My story is below somewhere) and I am still having trouble driving because of dizzy spells and bouts with anxiety. I believe this drug triggered some kind of panic/anxiety in me to come out 10 fold. I am still trying to calm down 5 months later :-( I do not think I am dealing with actual side effects anymore BUT I am dealing with the anxiety and panic that this drug caused.
