Methadone Use (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am new to the methadone and was wondering why my doctor would put me on methadone when he knew I had been addicted to Oxycontin before and had to go into the hospital for the withdrawals. They put me on the liquid methadone to get me off of the Oxycontin. How bad is it going to be to get off of the methadone if that time ever comes?

Anthony..., your Dr. put you on liquid methadone because of your oxy addiction. The liq. Methadone is for people who have severe narcotic addiction. (heroin, oxycontin, witch is synthetic heroin.) It will stop your withdrawals and most importantly, your cravings so instead of spending all your time looking to feed your addiction you can actualy focus on something else. aaaalike getting the needed therapy that goes along with meth treatment to teach you about your addiction and how to stay clean. Then when the times is right, average for many is 3 to 5 years, depending on the individual, your doctor will slowly ween you off. Meaning when you take your last dose of methadone you wont feel any need for any more. And please dont let that 3 to 5 scare you. You need to remember that during that time you are living everyday of your life, living again, weither it be resuming your role as husband, parent wife and or employee, youve found your way back and all it costs is a few minutes a day for treatment as life continues moving forward. It is a much better place to be-in life moving forward right along with it rather than being lost and left behind watching helplessly as it moves on with out you.

This is for gina; Honey I am truly sorry for what you have had to deal with If you have found a solution that seems to be working for you, that is wonderful. But I honestly think that if your pain was any where close to being managed, you wouldnt be given so many differant drugs for your situation. Id hate to hear of another problem come your way 10 years down the road with all else you deal with. Its called liver failure or severe damage. From the amounts of the drugs you say you are being described on a daily basis, that is not good news for your liver. The kinds of drugs you are on (most of them) are doing and will continue to do damage to your liver. Id hate to think what it might be like in the not so distant future. Every drug you mentioned being given ti you is to cover ths side effects from the one befor it. Except where the crazyness all starts witch obviously is from their choice of your Pain Management! Tylenol for example(vicodin) up to how many times a day did you say?;is one of the worst things you can run threw your liver daily. God bless and good luck. Maby it wouldnt hurt to explore some alternatives. Oh ya... they give you the flexerall to counteract the restless leg your experiancing witch is most likely from the vikes. As well as the sleep meds. Again... probably have trouble sleeping from daily use of the vikes. Two drugs that may be able to be aliminated just like that if you could find something a little gentler on your system than hydrocodone.

My husband has been Methadone for 10 years. Methadone is more addicting than the original drug they try to get you off of. Unfornutely, M.D.'s are under a lot of pressure to get people off of narctotics, but our Government feels it's O.K. to get folks hooked on Methadone. If you ask my opinion, it's because most Methadone treatment facilities are State/Government run....hmmmmm....sound suspicious to anyone else? My husband gets violently ill when he tries to come off of Methadone......you literally have to be weaned off of it - my suggestion is 5 mg per week, (if it takes 2 weeks for your body to get use to the next level - that's fine..decrease the mg amount more slowly) until you can completely come off of it. Get off of it as soon as possible. It will ruin your sex life, your teeth, your bones, your liver, your health. You would have been much better off staying on the Oxycontin. I am a retired medical worker (not a CNA either), so I've seen this before.....get off the Methadone - it's just as bad as being on heroin. As a matter of fact, I have had people tell me it's easier to get off of heroin than Methadone..Good Luck...it ought to be interesting to see if they post this one as written....

First, calm down. Your doctor is trying to treat your pain safely. He is giving you strong pain medicine that will not make you feel high. Methadone is just a long acting (synthetic) Opioid, and as such will take a couple weeks to get off of. They can take you down 1mg a day, and do so routinely

Stop worrying! 20mg is a fairly low dose. You will be fine. If you have not been able to handle methadone in the past, then tell your doctor promptly and discuss alternatives.

300 MG TWICE A DAY? That is an INSANE dose. That is the highest dose I have ever heard of. OMG.
I have been on Methadone for a long time. It has saved my life. I take 140, and that is considered a strong dose. There is no way whatsoever that you are getting withdrawal on 300mg twice daily. Not even in Baltimore so they dose over 300 1x daily. 200mg is mega high. 600? That can kill you.

I am an opioid addict for 30 years, methadone for past 5 yrs. Almost impossible to come off of methadone on your own. Takes a very long time. I am currently on 130 mg at the methadone clinic. American Society for Addictive Medicine recc's decreasing by 2(two) mg every 3 weeks. Anything more than that will cause florid withdrawal symptoms. I'm sure there will be people that jump on me and say"I did it on my own". Well bully for you superman. Much higher success rate of coming off under the care of a clinic or doctor of addictionology.

I have the memory loss thing too. I don't know if it is from the Methadone, or if it is because of all the drugs I put in my body for 15 years. I have R/A, am bi-polar, have anxiety,(I don't take medicine for bi-polar or anxiety because I can't sleep at all if I take SSRI's, and benzo's are lethal with Methadone). I get infections all the time, and I crave sugar like mad. I am overweight by 50 lbs and as you might imagine I am pre-diabetic. I am now following an exercise program and not eating sugar. It is HARD!!

So, I KNOW it is the methadone causing some of these problems, but without it I would end up back on pain killers and would be drug seeking. I have been clean for 5 years, and there is no way I will jeopardize that, for the sake of my kids!!!

No Juanita, they are not all government run. The government picks up the tab on destitute, homeless, and low income patients to keep addicts off the street and not breaking into your house, robbing your grandparents, and jacking your new car.

The clinics are run by Doctors, nurses, and counselors, in that order. Only the Doctor can prescribe your methadone and provide you the care you need.

I have been clean a long time, so I only go into the clinic twice a month. My insurance pays for it, and I am happy and craving free for the most part. I do have hjealth issues, but that is what led most of us to narcotics in the first place.

Some people can handle methadone, and others can't. It is for sure the easiest way to manage addiction IMO, but different strokes for different folks.

Hi Anthony my story is remarkably similar to yours except im on the other side of the world in Australia. i was IV'ing up 1600 mgs of oxy a day and seeing nine different Dr''s and doing it all on medicare i was in a situation that if i continued that dose of oxy wasn't sustainable with life and i would surly have died at any time, also i had the feds chasing me for defrauding the gov because i was getting all the pills on Australia's universal free health system i knew how the system worked and when different pharmacy[s would send in their monthly reports so i was about a month away from being thrown in jail. I went to a methadone prescribing Dr and laid it all on the line truthfully and he said that he could save my life but i had to make the choice never to use oxy again from that day (and i haven't) because i had turned myself in for treatment the feds stopped chasing me because they had bigger fish to fry and we have a meth epidemic in Sydney at the moment but i am now red flagged and only allowed to fill all my prescriptions at a nominated Dr and pharmacy. The Dr started me on 185 mgs of liquid methadone it was the original brown methadone that is 5mgs per 1ml, The max dose allowed is 200mgs or 40mls he also added 5mg of Valium BD I had to go into the pharmacy every day to be dosed luckily the original methadone has a half life of 36 hours so at no time did i go into full withdrawal it was uncomfortable for a month or so, He then tapered me at a rate of 10mgs per month so you can see that this took almost 3 years in total after 3 months of going in everyday and i had a clean UA for any other opiates i was allowed 4 'take away' doses on days of my choice so i only had to go in 3 times a week i choose to go in Fri, sat,&sun then have 4 days in a row on take a way's which allowed me to get away to visit family.

When i got down to 40mgs/8mls i changed over to subutex at 32 mgs and then tapered 2mg per fortnight . the last month was the hardest of the whole 3 years but i was determined not to fail. i have now been clean for 8 months but am still experiencing methadone withdrawal syndrome apparently it actually damages your gabba a receptors and like an alcoholic you have to face the fact that you are a recovering drug addict for life . Lyrica or pregabalin may help with some of the muscle aches and cramps it is supposedly non addictive but it dose antagonist of your gabba a receptors and if you look at the forums for lyrical some say it is a horror drug with combined opiate and benzo withdrawal all rolled into one and phizer had manipulated the double blind trials personally on only taking a low dose 75mg Marne and that helps with the lasting methadone symptoms that may never go away. the long and the short of the story continue with oxy;s and you will die or seek help take it slowly and you will have a 4 fold chance or permanent abstinence from your disease. hope this helps if you want to talk to me i also gave battled with benzo's as well and have a good users knowledge of most ab-usable drugs LOL because i have an addictive personality and my addiction may well have been a gambling problem, its a disease that can be treated but unfortunately you have to be vigilant for the rest of your life email me {edited for privacy}

I'm taking 90mg methadone for a year and a half now. I have to go to the clinic every morning. Only one take home for Sundays. It's a 20 minute drive, costly, clinic and gas, but it's been working for me. I was taking opioids. I work, function, but my question is would a daily pill form work for me now. I have no intentions of going backwards, but I'm scared to stop methadone, but also I'm having a hard time affording the weekly clinic fee. Any answers for me? Thanks

Andrea...Your info. Isn't correct, nor your diagnosis for Anthony. First of all...Methadone and Methadose are both the exact same medication, their only difference is the Pharmaceutical Co. that makes it. Second...If you are Rx'd Methadone, It can either be for pain or for addiction purposes. There again, Methadone and Methadose are the same drug. Third...He stated that he was on Duragesic patches, which is not Morphine, it is Phentanyl. Accuracy and a clear knowledge of what your writing is needed desperately by those who come here searching for answer's.
And I've been on Methadone for 23 year's, and have been Rx'd EVERY Narcotic known to man in the 13 year's prior to being on Methadone. Even flying to the U.K. to get medication that wasn't available in the U.S. so I feel somewhat qualified to comment on narcotic med's such as these.

Your doctor pretty much prescribed this to you in place of you oxycontin. I have had friends that went to the pain clinic with bad back problems and they never gave the oxycontin but has perscribe methadose pills along with percocet. Methadose is a pain pill but Methadone is what addicts get...he probably is taking you off oxycontin but you are on morphine patches also...when doc perscribe oxycontin for long term they pretty much know you will get addicted to eat quick...when you went through the withdrawls he probably decided it was time to take you off the oxycontin and put you on something similar.if you are on oxy 20mg...he will give you 20 mg of methadose...he may not put you back on oxycontin...i don't know...if 20 mg of methadose don't ease the pain...ask for may 30 or 40 mg...
