Lyrica Lawsuit (Page 52)
UpdatedDoes anyone know if there is an ongoing lawsuit against the company who puts out Lyrica? I am a mess from it. Do we have a leg to stand on when it comes to the side effects they found out from people like us? I am a long termer. I have been taking 900 mg since 2005. Is there anyone representing us? Thank you
They just started the whole diabetic nerve pain and Lyrica which is scary considering your hands and feet swell severely while taking lyrica and lyrica causes severe nerve pain. I am not sure how the swelling of your hands and feet helps people with diabetes. They are just marketing it to a whole new group of patients or guinea pigs
Hi Nick,
I'm also from Queensland and am looking for others, like you, who have suffered because of Lyrica. It's a dangerous and life-altering drug. I'm looking into getting a class action started and am trying to enlist as many people as possible. These drug companies must be stopped. Lyrica cost me my marriage because of the extreme personality changes I went through. I'm back to my calm self now but it's too late to save my marriage. I've developed heart damage and have slowed blood flow in three lobes of my brain...early signs of dementia, they say. I'll fight it on all levels with everything I've got. I'm not sure if we're supposed to post our email addresses here...but I can't think of any other way to get in touch with people like yourself. (My thinking processes have been affected, definitely!)
So my email address is: {edited for privacy}
Hope to hear from you and your wife soon.
I took it for about 8 months at 300mg per day and forgot to do the correct safety precautions at work and am on the verge of losing my $ 65,000 a year job because of this drug. I have already had 7 days of suspention. It makes me confused and forgetfull.
Hi Claire,
I've just done some quick research on lawsuits against drug companies in Australia, and it seems they do sometimes take place. Millions of dollars have been awarded to Australian victims of thalidomide, and in another case I discovered that an Australian Law firm actually joined a US class action on behalf of one of its clients. I'll continue to follow this up. We tend to be quite uninformed in Australia - that's the way they like to keep us, but the information is out there if we dig deeply enough. I'll keep you posted.
Pzifer was "taken to task" while Neurontin (gabapentin) was still a brand-name only drug. Drug reps were actively marketing reps in the US were trying to convince docs to prescribe Neurontin for "off-label" uses. An off-label is is prescribing the drug for any reason that the drug is NOT FDA-approved for. Pfizer went so far as to put print ads in medical journals encouraging off-label use by citing studies that suggested Neurontin was useful in non-approved conditions. It's legal for a doctor to Rx a drug for "off-lablel" reasons; for example, a doctor can prescribe Valium for tension headaches even though Valium has never been approved for this reason. It is NOT legal for a drug company to promote usage of a drug for off-label uses, though. At one time, Neurontin was promoted by the company for use in bipolar disorder. Not only does Neurontin lack approval for bipolar disorder, it isn't even effective. Pfizer settled the majority of its Neurontin lawsuits out of court. The company has been much more subtle with Lyrica - they have pretty much refrained from promoting off-label use of Lyrica. A class-action lawsuit against Pfizer may work; but likely wouldn't. The company was too careful. That being said, people who were prescribed Lyrica for off-label uses could sue their doctors - especially if they weren't told that they were receiving Lyrica for a non-approved use.
Good work Melinda. I'm on the Gold Coast. Let me know if there is anything I can do.
I found something that may help those of us in the U.S. "Rottenstein Law Group, N.Y."
Thanks Shayne. I'll definitely follow this up and be in touch with you. I'm waiting to hear from a US lawyer I emailed yesterday. The initial consult is free so at least I'll soon be armed with more information than I have at this time. I'll start getting a register together of fellow Australians who have suffered from Lyrica.
I have not posted for some time. Have been sending off emails to many lawyer firms in Canada looking for someone to represent us in a class action lawsuit. To date I have not been successful. Every response ends with, "be sure to have representation as soon as possible, due to statue of limitations." Has anyone in Canada found a lawyer to represent?
Has anyone contacted Pfizer directly?
I imagine there's no explanation for what they mean by having legal representation soon due to statute of limitations? I'd best add it to my list of things to research. I realize it means we have a certain time frame within which we must make our complaints, but just what that limit is with regard to the problem of Lyrica, I don't know.
Friends - It's not so much the "Statute of Limitations" that applies here. Pfizer is STILL marketing LYRICA (pregabalin) exclusively - meaning that it's still selling a drug that could be dangerous. However,to file suit against Pfizer for LYRICA, you'll have to prove that: 1. Pfizer knew of some evidence of adverse effects from LYRICA and hid that evidence OR 2. Pfizer outwardly marketed LYRICA for any reason other than the few reasons approved by the FDA. I think, unfortunately, that proving either will be difficult. However, again, if your PHYSICIAN prescribed you LYRICA for non-FDA approved reasons, saying something like,"This could help", you can sue your doctor. S/he would be guilty of giving you a drug that lacked evidence in treating your conditon WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE. IF your doctor said, "Some research indicated LYRICA could be helpful for ....", you cannot sue.
They say it is 2 years from the time of use and awareness.
IF you are considering suing your doctor over side effects you think Lyrica caused, I hope that you have made formal complaints to the FDA Adverse Side Effect Post-Marketing site - this site is managed by the FDA and collects negative info about medications that have severe or potentially dangerous side effects. If you haven't yet made a report, log onto fda.gov and file a report. Otherwise, your doctor, the FDA, and Pfizer can claim they "never knew" about the problem.
In my experience, it depends on the state but its 3yrs.
Thank you, Shayne and JL. Best to get moving then. I stopped Lyrica only a month ago but proceedings can take a long time.
Are you off the Lyrica yet Shayne? And if so, for how long. I'm thinking I'll need to recruit as many people as possible whose potential claims fall within that statute of limitations. With the thalidomide case, one of the women who was awarded a significant amount of money was 50 years old - born with no arms or legs. But her case would clearly be quite different to ours; and perhaps she'd be trying for years to seek justice, with no result till now.
The statute ran out for me, I was on it in 2006 or 2007. I don't remember. Of all the side effects left from lyrica in my system that is the only thing I have yet. Lyrica destroys the neurol pathways (sorry abot the spellingg. I used to be a good speller, but since lyrica I have forgotten how to spell two and/or three letters. I caseeit in my mind, I can't get out. Sometimes the word that I wat comes out wrong. I'll say berreirs instead of sherries. Also the word I want to say is in my mind but I can't day it until after speaking gibberist the word will suddenly and I can say it. Also I forgot to say about my job of 29 years, they put me on a 6 month probation with monthly evaluations where I would go up only 1/2 point a year. Needless to da I nevver reached the goal they had set for me. But even with that, they set the goal too high for me. You would think that, they being a hospital, they would help me and not fire me. It takes a long time for the nrves to find new pathways. In the mean time, we all have to suffer the damage lyrica did to our brains.:'(
It also affected my mind, there is a lot if things I can't remember And also while on it I had a TIA
add me to your list when you start class action suit my boyfriend died from it after taking it only 1 day (( had a reaction couldnt breath had massive heart attack and died right at my feet
Hi Portia...beautiful name by the way. Do you happen to live in Australia? I'm looking into a class action here, but am not sure if you can be included if you live overseas. It's a possibility I'll look into though. I know there have been Australian law firms that have joined class actions in the US. Must be a way. Please stay in touch.
And I'm so sorry for what happened to your boyfriend and for the shock and grief you've had to go through. I'm beginning to refer to lyrica in my mind as the demon drug.
