Low Blood Pressure And Hydrocodone Use (Top voted first)
UpdatedI had extremely high blood pressure so my doctor put me on an extra blood pressure pill. I'm already taking losartan potassium and Metoprolol. this new one I can't remember the name, but it's something like Triamterene and Hydrochlorothiazide in combination. I've been on it for 2 weeks, feeling very light headed recently, feeling terrible, I have no energy and extreme anxiety. I've been taking two Hydrocodone tens for hip pain for some months now and my blood pressure today was down from 150 / 110 to 90 / 60. I'm freezing and shaky and have high anxiety. I'm a 57-year-old male.
My doctor told me to drink a couple Gatorades and some chicken soup because I can't afford to go to the emergency room. I need to quit taking all but my Metoprolol until my blood pressure comes back up closer to normal range, which for me is like 128 over 88. I never had blood pressure this low before. It makes me feel horrible, that along with the anxiety. I've been drinking a lot of whiskey for the pain in my hip for months now in the evenings. I'm kind of afraid to take my hydrocodone cause I don't know how it will affect my already low blood pressure. Can you address that question? Thank you.

The whisky, depending on how much your drinking. Be honest. Could be withdrawal and or a sugar issue. Alcohol converts to pure sugar. You need your doctor to do a simple blood test. A Hemoglobin A1-C. That will track your blood sugars highs and lows for weeks backward. I took metro pro lol once and it dumped my pressure. Hct or hydrochlorothiazide is a blood pressure / diuretic and will make you pee out your sodium and potassium. If you take it. Eat a banana everyday to keep your potassium up to normal levels. Also, have your thyroid checked. Lastly, I know it’s hard but most states offer Insurance for free or very low cost. If you can afford whisky, you can afford Insurance.
I’m no doctor, Tom, but I see how everyone is being poisoned by Big Pharma. If I were you, I’d research CBD oil. Look for the science behind CBD and then decide if that might be a better way to go than the chemicals that inter your body thru prescription drugs. Take time to really research it!!
You can go to a FREE health clinic to have them check you out, or one that you pay on a sliding scale which could be very low.
In my opinion, and I'm a Nurse too, is that you're mixing too many medications together.
150/110 is a bit high, 90/60 isn't terrible. 100/70 would be better. Most times hydrocodone will cause a drop in BP and whiskey will raise it. Don't raise your hydrocodone without consulting with your physician, instead eat something to give it a boost. I would also, as the other nurse said, have your A1c checked for diabetes and have your thyroid checked. And in the event you are dehydrated, drink the Gatorade for the electrolytes and eat the chicken soup for the salt intake which will raise your BP some. If you still feel bad get to a clinic.
I take rhe pain med you take due to degenerative disc disease and bursitus in hip. I take a 1/2 pill and no other med for 2 hours after I take it, it says to not take any med for that length of time. If you are taking all meds together it could be your problem. I did that when I first started taking pain med and I would feel horrible, now I am ok taking it.
Yes, both the Hydrocodone, and the whiskey could cause lowered blood pressure, as well as lowered heart rate, until you drink too much of the whiskey, then it could cause things to go the opposite way, since alcohol can be cardio toxic.
If the new medication you are taking contains Triamterene and Hydrochlorothiazide, there is a chance that your symptoms might be due to dehydration, since the FDA does warn that both of them remove fluid from the body to help lower blood pressure, or treat conditions, such as nausea, dizziness, and increased urination.
That could be why the doctor told you to drink gatorade, and have some soup, they may afraid that you've become dehydrated and your electrolytes are too low.
As to abruptly stopping the others, that is not advisable, as that could cause your blood pressure and heart rate to spike the other way, which could result in heart attack, heart failure, or stroke.
How are you doing? Has there been any change?
Stop whiskey. Bad bad. Metropolol..makes me spacey drowsy lathargic. I stopped it. Common guy treat yourself better. Mixing whiskey and not eating right is gonna kill you soon. Sorry to say!

Well this might sound stupid but taking about 3 hydrocodones at a time has raised my blood pressure. But that's just me. I was in so much pain one time that I took it like candy. I don't recommend it but maybe see another GP and see what he says
@Tom,
I'd be changing doctors. I'm on valsartan during the day and I take amlodipine at night.
