Gabapentin Withdrawals (Page 10)

Updated

I'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief.

I used Gab 1800 mg for 6-9 months. Had to stop due to severe cramping in legs and feet and itching. Used 400 mg Magnesium for cramps and Gold Bond for itching. I stopped and itching continued for six months before going away. I took a 300 mg tablet sometime later and the itching and cramping started immediately. Now I'm taking Propanolol for anxiety and it works well for me.

I took xanax for 30 years. I stopped about 3 months ago after tapering off very slowly. Now propanopol is working well for me. No more panic attacks, quite a relief. Gab was also very good until side effects kicked in, but unbearable when they did.

I took 300mg LESS at bedtime last night ( from 600 to 300 ) and had my first night's uninterrupted sleep in months .
And today nerve pain activity seems to be less , I also limited caffeine , coffee / tea along with sugary drinks .
I will also only take 1 300 @ bedtime tonite as well . I also plan on " weening " myself off this stuff being it mostly maintained chronic sporadic pain . It really never rid me of it .
Good Luck , it's not for me so it should take apprx, 6 months to be Free of it .

Cher, buy a good quality Ice Bag, not a cheap one, fill it half way with water, put it in your refrigerator in a plastic shopping bag.

At night / bedtime ( or when itch is extreme ) simply rest the cool water bag on affected area, you'll see. Good Luck, I've been dealing with this nerve pain for over 4 years, med's seemed to aggravate or worsen it.

Prior to FDA approval EVERYONE ISN'T TESTED for side effects, so what "works" for you may NOT "work" for everyone. $$$$$ that's where money enters the picture in medicine sad to say.

Cher , once again 45 minutes after taking 1 bedtime 300mg Gabapentin the abnormal / sporadic stabbing like Pain began . It could be from other residuals of medications I also take for heart disease who knows .
But I do know 1 thing for certain and that is prior to approval everyone isn't tested and what effects me may not cause the same effects to you as well .
And after tonight's recurrence shortly after taking I won't be taking it tomorrow night .The mnftrs. can eat it themselves .

I decided to taper off of Gabapentin about 6 weeks ago; . My doctor's medical assistant told me to "do it slowly." I decided to decrease it by 300 mg per day every 2 weeks. I'm down to 300 mg per day. I had dizziness, nausea, tinnitus, depression, and severe itching all over my body.
My biggest problem is that I had no idea that these symptoms were due to withdrawal. The itching had me double dosing benadryl around the clock; and it did not help.
Thank God I decided to research this issue-I thought I had a terrible undiagnosed illness! I should have insisted on an appointment with my doctor. His medical assistant was remiss in not recommending I see him.
It goes to show that we have to be our own advocates when it comes to our medications, and use all of the information we have online.

I was on 3200 mgs a day and taken off to fast. Should of been done by dropping 100 mgs over a series of months. Went thru 6 months of withdrawal. Still dealing with a few.
Good Luck.

I relocated from one state to another and had to find a new pain doctor. During my first visit, my new doctor told me that my old doctor had me on dangerous levels of pain meds and needed to detox from them in order for him to treat me. which include, oxicodone 7.5 mg two times a day, diazepam 5mg two times a day, gabapentin 300mg 3 times a day and oxymorphone whenever I remembered to take it. He asked for me to go to a detox inpatient hospital and I was offended as I have never abused my meds. I decided that I was going to quit everything but the gabapentin as I got afraid reading how many ppl had seizures from stoping Valium. Well, withdrawl was intense until I stopped the gabapentin and it became pure hell. I got some severe anxiety and hot and cold flashes as well as some awesome hyper insomnia. Until I came across this thread and read about Magnesium. I would like to thank you for educating ppl about it. I was in absolute hell and I'm doing a lot better now.

It's awful how doctors never tell you how your body reacts to these meds before prescribing. I which I would had known how awful each of these meds are.

Thanks again.

I started taking gabapentin in April this year to help with withdrawals from alcohol. I was taking 300mg 3 x day. I was really afraid I would have withdrawals when it was time to come off so I started researching online and found this forum. This is where i learned about taking magnesium to help withdrawal symptoms.

I started by dropping 1 300 mg dose and holding for 2 weeks. My doctor recommended taking a good multi-vitamin and fish oil to help replenish vitamin stores. After two weeks, I dropped another 300mg dose, this is when I started feeling more anxious and depressed. I started taking ReMag at least 2 x per day. Usually in the morning and afternoon. Sometimes i would put the ReMag in a bottled water and sip on it all day. I would take the Calm magnesium in the evening because it does make you sleepy and to save on the ReMag which is far more expensive. I noticed a reduction in the withdrawal symptoms quickly. After two weeks holding on 300 mg, I reduced to 200mg 1 x day for 2 weeks, then finally down to 100 mg at night for 2 weeks. I really believe the ReMag and the Calm helped the withdrawals. I also put 2-3 cups of epsom salt in my bath water which really helps first thing in the morning and in the evening. It's been two weeks since my last dose and I have had minimal withdrawals. Best wishes!

Hello. I have been on gabapentin for about 2 months now. I tried to taper off. But I have some sort persistent cough that will. It go away. I tried everything to relieve it. Nothing seems to help. It is affecting my job and my ability to function with my son and I'm embarrassed to go outside because my coughs will not stop. Especially when I talk. I went to urgent care today, and they did not find any infections so they believe it us somehow connected to my trying to get off of gabapentin. I am so tired. Can someone please tell me if they ever went through this as well and how I can get back to normal? Thank you
