Difference Between Adderall And Amphetamine Salts (Page 17) (Top voted first)

I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

I am new to this sight and am happy I finally discovered it. I was diagnosed with ADD also Bi-polar in 1998. There have been many changes to my bi-polar medication, but not so much with my ADD medication. At that time my doctor claimed by using dexedrine in combination with other meds would may actually be of benefit to both diagnoses. I can't recall the the first month dosage, but was up to 60 MG per day a few years later. He made the recommendation I change to adderall at the same same dosage. I also was ok, with that, but I still preferred the dexedrine more. He retired and just last month I saw a new doc. It said the 60 mg was too high for adderall and believed I would go manic, have a stroke or even a heart attack. The he actually reduced my adderall intake to only 20 mg per day. I am really having a hard time with this decision he made. I really voiced my concern to him that it really was the correct dosage at 60 and I have maintained it for several years, but he wouldn't budge. The is a phyc doctor too. Do any of you have ideas on how I can approach him in a productive well thought out way so maybe will reconsider at my next visit. Thank you in advanced for your comments.

Margarita obviously has no clue what she's talking about. Adderal is not prescribed to someone because they are not smart, this has nothing to do with it. Although, it doesn't stop the not-so-smart opinions from people who have no clue what their talking about. Adderal is prescribed to help with focus and attention. You can have the highest IQ and not be able to focus. You obviously weren't diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and I assume you never had to take this medication or had to worry about being able to focus at work. Stop giving opinions you know nothing about.

I have taken Wellbutrin XL 150 mil 3X a day for about 3 years. I started to feel like it wasn't working for me anymore so when I talked to my dr, he suggested adding adderall 10 mil 2X a day. It sounded like a good idea, like I'd get a boost, however I do not feel like I have ADHD. He just wanted me to try it for a month before going thru all the testing. I was hopeful it would give me a boost and get me out of my "funk". My husband and I are self employed and much of our success is based on what we put into I our business And lately, I've just felt overwhelmed and it's made me avoid work and has put a bigger burden on my husband :-(

I was really encouraged leaving the dr office, BUT I am very disappointed.....it gives me a headache shortly after I take it, that lasts pretty much all day, and I feel like it puts me in a bad mood. I take my second dose around noon and by 4:00 I'm so sleepy and tired and frankly more depressed. I don't even want to cook dinner (and I enjoy cooking). This was not at all what I was going for. It's only been a week however so should I keep on taking this, or just give up on it all together?

I've read several things about this such as "up the dose" or even "lower the dose" but honestly, I don't know what to do......any advise?

Adderall isn't prescribed to people to make them smart. People with ADD aren't stupid. I seriously can't take anything else you said even remotely seriously now. You said that people who can't concentrate are just "not smart". Yikes.

You literally have no idea what you're talking about. Why are you even trolling around on this message board? Are you insinuating that people with add / ADHD aren't as smart? So you don't think people with chronic insomnia shouldn't take sleeping pills? Or people in severe pain shouldn't take pain pills? Yes-- adderall is speed. You're right! I wouldn't have made it through elementary school without "speed." I wouldn't have of all my successes if it wasn't for my medication. We tried EVERYTHING. According to you, GOD didn't make me smart enough so I should just settle on being average? I happily go off of my medication on the weekends and vacations- with no issues. You have no idea of what you're talking about-- you're the one who was born stupid.

my son is on the 15 mg, of the generic of adderall xr, the pharmacy last time i picked it up gave that to me, i asked questions she seem to say that they work the same i havent seen any difference as long as he has either he seems to be doing the same without either is another story, and hes 12. he only time i see a diffence in it slows down its working is when it needs to be up's in dosage wise becasue hes growing and his body gets immune to the other does. hope this helps, he was on concerta which worked the best but it only goes to 54 mg. and the dr said once an adult theres nothing he can do to up it...so he switched to stratera to help with saving the dosing as he grows, which did nothing at all, couldnt tell he was even on anything, so we tried adderall xr and that worked great then pharmacy gave me the generic and it seems the same to me.

Trust your instincts. Do you want your son dependent on the medication for the rest of his life? Consider giving him an opportunity to develop coping skills. Sounds like you turned out ok. I'm sure he will as well. Why take such a risk? Really, think about it. What harm can come from taking this medication? What harm can come from NOT taking it?

I've been on stimulant meds for over 10 yrs and to be brief, I was on brand name Adderall XR with great success but now on salts IR an can't stand it. So many side effects and not enough benefit. I really wish I could be on brand IR. In a perfect world it would give me the dosing flexibility of IR with the benefits of XR. But I'll never know cuz I cannot find it anywhere. If anyone does have any info on where to get it pleeeeeease let us know.

Please help! Weird generic adderall filled at CVS today. 20mg tablet

This is a HUGE concern for me as I just filled my prescription today (9/8/2014) at CVS and found your post after googling what the difference is as they look completely different as they often do with generics, but I've NEVER seen them look like this nor look so chalky. I haven't taken one yet so I do not know if it will have the same results as my previous ones which were all TEVA pharm also. Did you speak with CVS about your findings with this new pharm company? I would really appreciate knowing what they had to say if you don't mind. Thank you in advance.

I Agree that was so RUDE!!!! I just started my Script of Amphetamine salt adderall 20 mg for the whole day today is my 1st day and I'm just happy to live life. If you have to come on here to shoot people down for getting help, Maybe you should look I to more than any of us.

I take adrenal because I have my whole life, riddilin, conserta, adderal, vivance it's all been in my body and there are pros and cons to all of them. I also found that over the 20+ years on this I have seen quite the shift in this drug and it seems that its so taboo because of the rapid growth in abuse, hence why vivance was created. I would strongly recommend (which I have done with my wife) go see a phycologist who specializes in ADHD/ADD. This will save you loads of pain because the government is cracking down on family doctors across the nation. Its becoming so f***ed up that I can't go 3 days early to pick up my meds with out being labeled by some text book d*** head pharmacist a pill junkie. The struggle is real and its only going to get worse.

XR is e"X"tended "R"elease averaging up to 5 or 10 hours and IR is "I"nstant "r"elease averaging up to 3-6 hours.

I suggest you watch to free movie "ADD & Loving It"

1st 6 months of taking the medication you always are adjusting, start being aware of how you feel with certain foods and moods too. But after 6 months you should be able to nail down what works and how your body reacts and why.

There is a huge difference in the IR generic Amphetamine Salts when it comes to CorePharma brand, AuroBindo(from India) or AuroLife(US), and Teva/Barr Manufactured brands. Not sure about CorePharma, but I've had Auro, 20mg is pink round labeled "U30"....I didn't like it, and if you research or ask any pharmacist they know that most patients complain about it, same active ingredients but different INACTIVE fillers that may cause different people to digest differently and release the active ingredients in a different order/rate/etc; thus different reactions some good some bad depends person to person. I personally, and find that most others, all like TEVA/BARR brand... that is oval shaped labeled "b-###" (#'s vary depending on your dosage.)

I gotta say I take basically the same amount of the same medications you take and it has helped me function as a normal human for years and whatever Margerita or whatever her name was with the dumbest post I've seen and no clue what she is talking about and to judge anyone else she's as ignorant as can be. People are on here to seek public help not to be lectured like we are i****s when the fact is you have zero clue what you're talking about!

Celeste, you have a good point about sating that its nobodys place to play doctor. But if you really want to make a statement that people will take seriously, you're probably better off NOT stating your own personal beliefs (or lack therof) as fact. Unless a person has 100% knowledge of everything in the universe, than nobody really knows whether or not there's a God or not. Just some advice, girl :)

I Thoroughly Believe there is a MAJOR difference between Amphetamine Salts and Adderall. Adderall WORKS for me and the Salts do nothing at all. For me this is a FACT not just my Opinion.

This is absurd. Adderall has proven to be an effective medication to treat ADD, I know this first hand, it has absolutely kept me employed, focused and functioning. It is not an illegal substance, unless you are taking it without a valid script from your doctor, but for that matter...so is penicillin! It's like saying marijuana is a gateway drug, but alcohol is not... If you are taking Adderall for diagnosed ADD and are under a physician's care, please do not take that one opinion to be well founded. It's simply not true. Period.
