difficulty with swallowing pills. can swallow 20mg , not able to swallow 40 mg .. which is more advised. 2 20 mg. or can 40 mg be crushed and taken? ## I hope you have gotten your answer by now, but it is fine to crush this medication and administer it in some applesauce, jelly, jam or the like. ## Any medication that is not time released can usually be crushed, or broken, to make it easier to take, as long as the manufacturer, or your pharmacist doesn't instruct otherwise. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Are you on any other medications?

I take Losartan in the am and Paxil and Lipitor before bed. I find myself extremely tired and could sleep most of the time. I can't wait to got to bed. Is this tiredness due to the Losartan or Paxil??? If so I want my Dr. to wean me off of it. I was always extremely active...not used to this. Thanks,Carol ## Hello, Carol! How are you? The first culprit that I would suspect for such a problem would actually be the Lipitor. It is classified by the FDA as being a statin medication and they cause problems for many people that take them, in quit a few cases, people have had to stop taking it altogether. You may also experience nausea, headache and joint/muscle aches. There is also a chance that it would be a combination of all of them. Have you discussed the issue with your doctor? How l...

SMALL WHITE TABLETS ## My mother has been on Atenolol for her blood pressure for years and now the pharmacist told he is out of Atenolol and gave her Sandoz as a replacement. Is this medication the same as Atenolol? ## Well Sandoz is the drug company name, not the medication name, so I cannot tell you if this is the same stuff or not, unless you provide the imprint on the pill, or the medicine name. ## Hi. I have been taking atenolol 25 mg for possibly 10 years or more and never had a problem with sandoz. All of a sudden they are having a hard time getting atenolol so now I'm getting them from zydus supplier and the pill is much bigger. I took it and got very dizzy/sick to my stomach with diarrhea. My systolic BP is sometimes, 160, 150, 140. My diastolic is fine. My Dr. wants to increase the lisinopril to 60 mg (taking one of 40 and one of 20). I read that taking 80mg of lisinopril is no better than taking 40 mg, so my question is how 60 mg of lisinopril is going to help, if 80 or 40 have the same effect? ## Yes, the maximum daily dosage is 40mgs, it's not been found to have any benefit over that dosage. Have you discussed this with your doctor? There are other medications you can try that may give you better BP control. ## I was taking 40 mg lisinopril and my BP was still very high. Approx 200/90 at night. Dr upped lisinopril to 40 mg in the morning and 20 mg more in the afternoon. Now my BP is about 105/50 in the morning and about 150/85 in the evening. I'm feeling shaky...

I need a list of blood pressure medications that do not contain sulfa as I have an allergy to sulfa and so far have been on 4 different meds that all made my throat swell. I took: Lisinopril, Amlodipine, Metoprolol, Methyldopa. So it’s generic or sulfa that’s the problem in these. ## How severe was the swelling? Was this diagnosed by a doctor? Did you go to the ER for treatment? It isn't that they all contain sulfa, it is that they might be based on it, somewhere down in their roots of derivation. In many cases, the only thing you can do is try medications, to see which ones work for you, and which ones cause a bad reaction, according to FDA warnings. Was the swelling bad enough to cause trouble breathing? I am not trying to be mean, or say I don't believe you, but m...

Hello. After searching and searching, the concept of an actual expiration of a drug seems to be very two-sided. Obviously, the manufacturer does not want to tell people that their drug is still 99.9% effective after 10 years because they would have to analyze it which would take ten years, they would be liable for various reasons, and they want you to buy more instead of taking old medicine. That is capitalism and I support it and understand it. However, does anyone know what the actual shelf life of Toporol XL is? What if there is a natural disaster or (insert other unexpected reason here) and I cannot get to a pharmacy or the pharmacy cannot provide it? Sudden stoppage without titration can lead to death in my case. Even titrated stoppage can lead to death. Basically - I have to have ...

I'm in the process of changing HBP meds and am currently on all three - Enalapril(new), Atenolol and HCTZ. This past week I have experienced a bass register hearing problem. Could this be connected to my meds? ## What are you changing from and what are you switching to? Hearing issues are not a normal side effect of these medications. The FDA reports them as typically cause drowsiness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. However, there is no way to say how any given medication will affect anyone that takes it. Have you consulted your doctor? Did they have any ideas of what might have caused this issue?
