Went to dentist last Monday for abscessed tooth. Prescribed Augmentin 3 per day. On Thursday, pain was worse. Dentist opened to tooth, put meds in tooth, and prescribed penicillin 4 per day. Also have cellulitis in face from middle of chin/lip up halfway to my jaw on left side. Pain is not as bad as it was before tooth was opened, but still hurts. Lip is beginning to swell. Hi, my name is Maya, I went for a checkup with a new dentist. The x-rays showed there was an infection in my lower left jaw under 18 and 19 (#17 is gone), she said that the infection was making the bone in that area look like Swiss cheese. 18 and 19 are in bad shape, on 18 a large filing crumbled a couple of years back and had lots of decay. 19 was destroyed by a dental student who was supposed to do a pulpotomy but did a pulpectomy instead. My brother has been on this antibiotic now for over 56 weeks. He is getting very ill and we are trying to get them to take him off of it. I thought if on an antibiotic for a long period of time, could make the body resist it if needed in the future. ## Hi Marcy, 56 weeks is a unusually long time to be on any antibiotic in my opinion, seeing as most doctors I've gone to only prescribe a 7-10 quantity for general infections. Is it safe to take this medicine? ## Hi Ruth, The only potential problem I see with taking expired penicillin is not so much about the safety of the drug itself, but in terms of losing efficacy overtime, a less potent antibiotic inevitably creates a greater risk for developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. And for that reason alone I think it would probably be a good idea to invest in a fresher prescription that has retained more of its potency -(depending on what your storage conditions were like over the past 5 and half years). My 6mo old has been getting pneumonia almost since birth. I give him his dose religiously and as soon as the tenth day is up, HE HAS IT AGAIN WITHIN A FEW DAYS. Every time I bring him to the Dr they do X-rays and I'm really tired of doing the same thing over every other week and it's only effective when he's actually taking the meds. My question is if the antibiotic says to discard after ten days and it's three days after the discard date is it still ok to give it to him. Fifty years ago I was only slightly allergic to penicillin with rash on my butt. Currently, I've been sick with a bug going around for a week and a half now. Almost better except my gland hurts when I swallow and swollen and still slight congestion in my chest. I have 500 mg of Amoxil in my home. Is this okay to take this? According to umm.edu's drug interaction checker, there are no interactions listed between azithromycin and benadryl (diphenhydramine). I found this to be the case on other webpages as well, which this leads me to believe that it should be fine to take the two together, provided that your doctor gives you the ok.
