My brother has been on this antibiotic now for over 56 weeks. He is getting very ill and we are trying to get them to take him off of it. I thought if on an antibiotic for a long period of time, could make the body resist it if needed in the future.

Hi Marcy,

56 weeks is a unusually long time to be on any antibiotic in my opinion, seeing as most doctors I've gone to only prescribe a 7-10 quantity for general infections. Also taking antibiotics for this length of time could quite possibly be what's making him feel ill, not only due to potential antibiotic resistant bacteria like you mentioned, or side effects, but also because these types of antibiotics are known to diminish good bacteria as well, whereas the patient may need to take probiotics in order to help replenish what was lost.

If you don't mind my asking, what type of infection did your brother have that called for such a long term course of treatment? Maybe it would be a good idea to check in with his doctor regarding the length of treatment just to be on the safe side.

I hope this helps!
