Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 50) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?
Jussssst Wait for It....Believe ME..it Destroys...AND..Makes you Way more Depressed...than the Acne ever did...
TRUST ME
I took accutane twice once when I was 16 and again when I was 19. The second time I took it I was pulled off it immeadiatly after a bloodtest reaveled my liver was basically failing. Since than my liver functions have never gone back to normal like they say they should. Ive also developed bowel issues, endocrine issues, rhenoids syndrome, and a ridiculous amount of mental health issues(panic attacks, Ocd, agoraphobia etc) that I never had before. I know its been pulled off the market in the US, but not overseas last I read. I know what its like to be a teenage girl with severe acne, I know it can be depressing and cause anxiety issues in itself, but coming from a person who takes extreme pride in their appearance taking accutane is just not worth it there are other options. Like my dermatologist said the second time I was on it "do you want to be alive and have some acne, or be dead and have clear skin"
Robert, please go see a rheumatologist. Spurs on your spine - sounds like my son and he was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Dibilitating and painful. Pain started in the tail bone. He doesn't have the gene for A.S. so that is why the doctors believe it was accutane that caused it. Research the disease and you will be able to determine if that might be what you have. Find a rheumatologist that specifically treats A.S. and knows what he/she is doing. Good luck
Adele.. my son suffers from taking this crap. Also my sister had taken this unknown to me or our family when she was younger. She some years ago was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She has also suffered bone loss and lost all her teeth . she was approx 40 when this happened . She never put two and two together as she has taken this Poision several times since her teens.
At 28 years of age I took the drug for 4 months and had to go off because my college grades dropped 40%, due to lack of focus from the drugs, I was a different person when I taking the drug, mind played tricks on me, had to always tell myself it was the drugs not me.... 6 weeks later I was back to myself.
At 29 I went on the drugs again, took really good care of myself. Took many naps to offset the lack of focus, ate well, isolated myself from my friends, to save face. and when I had bad days, I just reminded myself of my life prior to the drugs and didn't sweat the mind games that the drug was playing on me. I took accutane for 12 months. 3 months off the drugs things are coming along nicely. Starting to get my memory back, no longer tired, brain feels like it is starting to repair its self.
I think taking it later in life was a good choice by my doctor. I don't regret taking it, but I was very disciplined with taking care of myself when I was on it.
Hi to all again
After thinking about all the comments i've read it can soon make you feel so down and its all ending in doom and gloom.I've got a child of 4years and i have every thing to live for i've always been a posative thinker and we ALL NEED TO DO THE SAME.Can we not put our energy into trying to see what we could all do as a group to put the people responsable to blame. As i said earlier i've just come across this site i will be at my doctors next week demanding a greet deal.I'M not one to put up and shut up they will need to give me ALOT OF ANSWERS.Please can i say i tryed reflexology years ago and alot of my symptoms went away ,which i will be starting straight away i stopped after having test for one thing and another. But make sure they are reputable not someone whos done a six month course. Also cutting gluten out or just cut bread, sweet things and cereal out big differance for those with stomach problems.HOPE IT HELPS SOMEONE .
I'm honestly glad I came upon this thread.. I had went into my dermatologist office this week with the knowledge of the side effects this medication can bring about. They never did sit right with me.. nor did it sit right with my family. I had only the thought of having flawless skin in my head, which drove me towards this drug. I got approved to take it & got all the necessary paperwork I had to fill out, I decided to look more into this drug & research it a lot more before I actually started taking it. After stumbling into this thread and reading all these horrible stories of the long-term damage this drug has brought upon, I'm starting to think I almost made a BIG mistake. I do not want to gamble with my life & jeopardize the health of my body in the future in order to have clear skin, it's never all that. I'm throwing away those consent papers now.
J,.
I am glad to hear this thread helped you make a decision not to take Accutane generic's versions like Amnesteem etc. This thread was started with hopes of giving people more information with actual personal stories. Unfortunately...some of peoples experiences have had many unwanted endings. I am glad you will not be one of them.

Acne itself is many times a symptom of modern diet. Antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals have transformed wheat, dairy and other food sources into something detrimental to our bodies instead of nourishing. Accutane causes an additional lot of problems. I suffered from severe depression, muscle pain, joint pain and a host of allergies and other health problems that began when I took Accutane 20 years ago and have gotten worse over the years. Recently I stopped eating wheat, sugar and dairy except for kefir and eggs. Within 48 hours, I felt a 300% increase in energy, a complete abatement of depression and anxiety symptoms, disappearance of inflammation in my muscles, and a general sense of well-being that I didn't even have before taking Accutane. I believe that Accutane, as well as many other substances including chemo drugs, anti-depressants, anti-biotics and birth control, cause damage to the body's ability to process food. A recent U.S. Airforce study revealed that since the 1950's, celiacs disease is four times as prevalent in the general population. Diet is the root of much of what ails. Foods are not the same as they were 150 years ago. We need to recognize the change, the damage and the remedy. If you want to heal from Accutane like I have...Please try a diet that recommends no wheat, sugar or dairy (this includes cheeses, fruits and bread). You may eat vegetables, meats, have stevia or erythritol as sugar substitutes, and experiment with gluten-free grains like quinoa, millet and amarinth and most importantly, eat fermented foods like sour kraut and Korean kimchi. This is not a joke. You will heal from Accutane or at least control the side effects even if you can't reverse the damage already done some time ago. Body Ecology is the diet I do by Donna Gates but if you look around you will find others that work too. In order to kill off yeast, rid the body of toxins and replenish probiotic "good" bacteria and establish a healthy digestive ecosystem is the goal. You won't be sick anymore. What do you have to lose by trying it for two weeks? If you continue to do it for yourself, you will never suffer again. I can't tell you how good it feels to be free of Accutane-related side effects after 20 years. Peace and good health to you all, friends...
akrija dosz,
Very Well Put! Thank you for taking the time to leave information on here that can help others. I have mentioned a few times also about how the Candida Diet taken with Pro-Bionics has help. I also believe that taking natural serotonin products are much better for our systems than anti-depression med handed out like candy by Physicians.

Please try something else. My stepdaughter took it for 9 mos at 16 after 5 years of battling acne and now she's 20 and has IBS, battling kidney stones, gets pink eye often, and the doctors all tell her her immune system is permenently weakened due to the Accutane. We just wish they had told us this possibility 4 years ago.
Kk,
Did the doctors tell you that your daughter has pink eye? Did they mention Uvelitis. My son was diagnosed with Uvelitis in his eyes, which looks like pink eye. It is signs of the body attacking its own immune system. If someone is diagnosed wth Uvelitis after taking Accutane, a colonoscopy may be in order if she is also having digestive proplems. It can be a sign of IBS and normally a colonoscopy will rule any such matters out.
Wishing your daughter the best,
Scott
I have been on Claravis for a month and a half, only taking one 40Mg pill per week. Even at that and I am not sure if this is the culprit, but I have constant Urethral irritation and just doesn't seen to go away. I have been off the drug for a lttle over two weeks , just to see if the irritation will go away (I hope so). I just wonder if anyone else, out there has experienced this possible side affect.
I have had the same problem for 3 years now. My skin gets randomly itchy and raise with small bumps and its all red in that spot. Im 26 and this urticaria(dermographism) has felt like hell. I am consistently itching somewhere on my body. None of the doctors can target it. If you know anything that I can do to make it go away please help. Im in so much pain :(
I would get off of it now. It worked wonders for me back when I was in high school. Its about 10 years later and I am miserable. I have urticaria(dermographism) now and extreme joint and back pains. I am extremely depressed with the motivation but the lack of movement. I would rather have acne and have people judge me by my looks than go through the crap I am going through.
Yep it can dry up the Uretha and cause Interstitial cysitis (spelling??) I would not restart Accutane!
Hi. I am 26 years old. It's been 6 years now since i used roaccutane for 40mg for 5 months. It has caused permanent dry skin on my whole body. It also thinned my skin. My lips are still cracked like there are 2 giant craters on it and the worst thing is, i have developed some kind of terrible rash 2 years ago and it is not healing a bit. This eczema/rash is hurting me all day. I think roaccutane killed my skin's repairing ability. Taking this drug was definitely the biggest mistake of my life.
My son recently passed away. He was 27 years old and the cause of death was atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We are in shock. He was not overweight and had no risk factors for heart disease. He had 75% blockage in his coronary artery, left ventricle was hardened and he had pulmonary edema. I also tried to remember when his behavior changed as he suffered from depression and this started when he was around 16. We thought at first he was showing signs of rebellious teenager but his behavior continued until his death. We consulted with medical professionals but we never found the help he needed. He was prescribed accutane and one round didn't work so we did a second. I had no idea that this medication was a brain cancer medication. We knew there were side effects from this medication but we did not know they could be long term and that they could show up years after taking it. I believe this drug caused his depression and heart disease. I am pretty angry as I write this and just want to know how many other people have suffered from this drug. I can't come up with any other explanation for his heart condition. When I read this post, it gave me chills to know someone's son other than mine had advance heart disease and had taken this medication. Nothing can bring him back, I just want answers.
Tammy.. so sorry to hear of your loss. People that dont live with sufferers or are suffering at the hands of this Poision do not understand. My son suffers depression and has has several problems including strange feelings in his veins and aound his body. As these are rare and world wide no one seems to want to do or tell the truth about the problems our children are suffering from. It makes me to sad and worried that we have no one to turn to for answers and help. Thankyou for sharing your story. My heart felt wishes go to you and your family x
