Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 51) (Top voted first)

I have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?

Tammy, I can't Imagine anything TOUGHER to handle than the Loss of your Child. My Heartfelt Condolences go out to you & your Family. My son has NOT been the same after taking this POISON.. I have taken him to so MANY Different Dr's and Not a one will say it's the ACCUTANE. I know it is what is causing his Physical & Emotional Issues. He has NOT been the same since after taking his 2nd course. I will CONTINUE my FIGHT with my son and NEVER Quit until I can get just 1 Dr. to tell me the TRUTH..It's Frustrating and ANGERS me to know that People like your Son have LOST their Precious Lives over a Drug we all BELIEVED was to get rid of their Acne and NOT being told the TRUTH about it being a Cancer Drug. Your story hits my HEART and I have Great Sorrow for You. May GOD Bless You Tammy..May your Son Rest in Eternal Peace

Even as My Life Continues to Crumble from underneath Me...I cannot Help but Just HOPE..The Examples of All the wounded AND Lost...from This Accupoison...will cause The Unaware...and the Un informed...to Stay AWAY...from The HEllish Poison...
YES...Acne...can Be Horrible...even detrimental...and disfiguring...
But...for the Most part....it is Skin deep...
Once a Person takes the ACCUPOISON...
The Pain and the Suffering...Goes all the Way into ones very Soul...I realize...that sounds..or reads..Quite Dramatic....Well....To the Sufferer....This Entire detriment...Is ..on a personal Level....along the Lines of.........A Damn Greek Tragedy!.....
I Do...Of course..Pray for Your Son.....I Hope he finds relief..and peace....
I Took the Poison ...three Times.....80 mg..2 times a day.....for three courses...three years running......So...I Pray...anyone that took it less.....

Our son took Accutane for 6 weeks. He then had to STOP taking it due to ending up in the ER and staying in the hospital for a week. He first began having the dry, cracked lips, more acne, head itched badly. Then it went into his back hurting and joints hurting badly. He is a HS starting basketball player (but had to quit) and is a very active 16 year old boy. He then started having groin pain on his left side. I was beginning to really wonder about Accutane and if it was causing all of this. He then had some night sweats, low grade fevers and just was super tired and I would find him sleeping more than normal. We took him to doc 2x before we ended up in the ER. He had a BLOOD CLOT A FOOT LONG once we got there. We were shocked. But in doing our research, like all of you on here have done as well... we have found that this is a rare but serious side effect. Our son could have died, but thankfully God chose to spare him. He is on blood thinner now and seeing a specialist. We told every doctor we met during his hospital stay about Accutane. No doctor will come right out and say Yes this could have happened because of Accutance. His specialist (blood) did tell us to not give it to him anymore. My other son had already thrown it away... so that wasn't a problem. This medicine is so scary.. and to hear of all of you guys problems that have happened later on in life is also so scary. The one thing I"m glad about? I'm glad he only took it 6 weeks. Has anyone else ended up with a blood clot while on Accutane??

I took this drug about 14 years ago, in high school. I took it for about 6 months. For the last several months I have been "generally unwell". My recent blood work suggests an autoimmune disorder affecting connective tissues, pointing towards sjorgren's syndrome. After very little research I have connected sjorgren's with people who have taken accutane. Is there anyone out there who has developed serious issues more than a decade later??? I guess after reading some of the known side effects I have suffered from several of these in the past but never made the connection. Thinking back, shortly after taking the drug I developed irritable bowel syndrome and recurring bladder infections - both of which I still suffer from today. I also still suffer from extremely dry eyes. More recently, (and the reason for my bloodwork) I've developed severely debilitating muscle/tendon pain and rapid-onset of arthritis. Although I have always suffered from minor joint aches and pains, it has recently rapidly gotten worse to the point that I'm in constant pain. So I ask this question again, Is there anyone out there that shares this decade-delayed response? Otherwise it may be completely un-related to accutane.

I'm a 5'4", 115 lbs female - I'm in good shape - no direct reason for this pain.

I Took the Accupoison...20 plus years ago...
I Have about every Related Problem one finds on the Accutane associated List of ailments...EXCEPT...The Suicide..or Death..
although...Over the years..during extremely trying..And Stressful times...I did...Look up to Rafters in My Horse barn...and Wonder IF Id built them strong enough to hold me...If you follow..
My muscles..and tendons..are beyond Fatigued...all the time...My joints are full of bone spurs..and Arthritis..My Spine is Severely Shortened...and crumbling..so the doctors Tell me...when Im incapacitated...
Ive had Spurs on my spine since 4 years after ceasing the Treaments..that were called Therapies...HA
I Have nearly Lost my Memory...
At one point..the siezures were so bad..I wished they would end..any way possible...My temper is all over the place...
My thoughts..about incoherent...Ive about forgotten how to even Spell...(unless I Truly Concentrate..and re read everything...(About compulsively) I am about wracked with Pain...Without relief..
My Stomach bleeds...So I cannot even consider taking the Codeine...or anything else strong enough to help with the pains..
I was diagnosed with Krohns 15 years ago...and ibs first..of course..
I sat in waitng rooms of Gastroenterologists...next to 85 year olds..with worse stomach ailments than them...Often times..in my mid 20s...The older folks thought I was in the wrong doctors waiting room...or was waiting to make a delivery?..
My Friggin bones break More easily than My 89 Yr old Mothers do...
SHE Barely Has The onset of Osteoporisis...Mine is Advanced..and near crippling..
YEAH..This S*** in a Bottle...KILLS..Maims..Whatever Youd Like to Label it...
Its PURe POISON!...
Im Merely Praying...the Day Before I May Eventually Expire from its Long term Effects..I Find a Way to exact My Own...Selfish Revenge...

First I would like to say that I am happy for you that you have not suffered any long term side effects of this medication. None of the people on this board would wish that on anyone. Second, you are in no position to be judging anyone. You do not know any of these people and your post are very insensitive.
My son passed away from advanced heart disease and we do not have a family history of heart disease. He was only 27 years old, was fit physically and there really is no explanation for his condition. Along with heart disease, he suffered with depression emotional issues that we sought help for him and it seemed hopeless that we would ever get the help he needed. He was a very active, intelligent young man that was taken away from us way too soon. If this medication can do this to our family, it could do it to others. It was taken off the market for a reason. I can't definitively say it was the accutane but the symptoms he did have go hand in hand with the side effects of this medication. I truly feel you owe all the people who have suffered because of this medication an apology. You are not in a position to judge and neither am I but I lost my son and it very well be because of this drug.

I am amazed and amused by the ignorance of others that have nothing better to do than attempt to cause others unwanted and unneeded harm. Take a really good look around and be grateful for the important people you let into your world. I hope they are mentally and physically always there for you.
One last thing, the next time you get up at 6 am and write such whining and pathetic remarks deliberately to hurt others, turn around and wipe your butt with the final paper, it will serve you much better.

I am curious to know how many posts you read before you decided to write your HEARTLESS Post? Did you read about the Parents that LOST their Children because of this POISON? Did you read about the Parents, Siblings & Loved One's who are having to Care for people that have been affected by this POISON both Mentally & Physically? Did you read the Posts from the VICTIMS themselves & their SUFFERING? If you did, I ask You WHY the Hell would you write what you did? Do You have ANY Sympathy at all for People or is it all about YOU looking Young with Beautiful skin? Next time You want to Vent about WHINING people (NOT WHINING PEOPLE) these are people with HEALTH ISSUES caused from this POISON... STOP and feel some HUMAN Compassion.... People that haven't suffered in some kind of way are very lucky.
Maybe the woman with her ridiculous remarks is writing this on behalf of Roche and is just a phoney..
I recently came into contact with a guy who was on a trial in the UK some 20 years ago and he DID get the Joint Pains etc. He was on Accutane and was aslo given evening primrose at the same time. He said the pain was quite bad but he continued the full course. Luckily for him he recovered after stopping the drug. I asked if he had children and he said yes.
On the leaflet that comes with this Poision it says upto 30 % get joint pain but does not say how long for.
WE all KNOW as Parents or SUFFERERS that it is this CRAP that has changed our CHILDRENS lives ans some have LOST their lives.
These maybe RARE World wide cases but some GREEDY company found a Niche in the market when they noticed in CANCER Patients that their skin looked good. They saw an Opportunity to make Money and that is the ONLY reason they give this POISION to People ! FACT
For the IGNORANT people Accutane kills the dividing cells. If you don't have bad (cancerous) cells what the hell do you think it is killing. OUR Good cells of course.
UNLESS you live with a LOVED ONE who like myself has watched my son since having taken this for SIX WEEKS and started with Joint Pain, and the rest that has followed. You know NOTHING !

GOD Bless ALL the People Suffering at the hands of this money making POision

Mitch, if your son has joint and muscle pain, check out ankylosing spondylitis. Try to find a rheumatologist in your area who will take some xrays of his hips and spine. My son experiences excrutiating pain, but under a doctors care for A.S. and yes, more medicine, he is basically pain free. He does show some spine fusion and when A.S. victims have a flare is when the spine fuses. You don't want that. You must keep him from going into a flare resulting in permanent damage. Do some research on A.S. and good luck.

Alegria , thankyou for the info.. since takeing the Isotretinoin my son will not take medicines or have a bone scan. And he has just turned 18 so it is his choice. He would not take pain killers and he was suffering v.bad with wat they thought to be Intercranial pressure on the brain. his body was shaking horifically. He has started today with headache and possible migraine but has not yet taken the nasal spray he ended up using the last time this happened. And that was after 2 days in hospital suffering. I am so scared of what might happen again to him. The physical and mental trauma he went through last year was heartbreaking to watch. Other people Do Not understand. I had tried to contact Accutane Action group but no one replies to my emails or letter i sent to them .

Mitch, I understand. But if he has pain in his hips, tailbone and muscles and it is Ankylosing Spondylitis, going untreated will cause more permanent damage. How? It is during flares that the spine fuses, which has a crippling effect. So the medicine keeps him from going into a flare. The RX is NOT a pain killer, neither is the medicine addictive. My son would rather not have a fused, frozen spine on top of the pain. That is what doctors told my son and myself. If he doesn't have hip/spine/tailbone pain, then he probably doesn't have A.S. I'm so sorry to hear of your son's health problems. Have the doctors said it is due to accutane?

Alegria. 6wks on the drug he started with joint pains,by 8 wk it got worse so he stopped taking it ,which was Dec 2010. Now 13 month later he has joint/ bone pain mostly in his back,knees , shoulders. Hes getting sore eyes again & hot sensations in his head . He feels cold & is very aggitated. He has insomnia & cannot be in company with people chatting etc,. The Rheumatologist said last wk its either a reaction to a viral infection or the drug that has caused his problems. They just do not want to Admit its the drug. This dtug starts off a reaction whivh it seems cannot be reversed ot switched off . They still give it to our children . His Derm was a complete Ass. & said we can't Prove its the drug. He also said people in USA have tried to sue but were unsuccessful. My son was really upset and really angry by what he said.

Alegria, thankyou for your reply. I am so Angry at myself for taking him to the doctor in the first place. I tried to keep him occupied playing cards last night as the light was hurting his eyes and he was really aggitated as he cannot sleep and does not go anywhere which is not normal.He is lethargic and depressed with his situation. I feel so helpless as im sure everyone else does . This affects his state of mind and i dont know who to turn to for help. The rheum wanted him to take anti-depressants but he refused, and who can blame him !

Hello All,
Has anyone been told they have Compartment Syndrome. Signs of Compartment Syndrome are not being able to lift you foot or leg after walking, kicking a soccer ball, basically any activity that involves using your legs. Pain in legs after use and unable to lift foot for 5-10 minutes off floor are a few symptoms. Last summer my son was operated on this in his right leg. It is very rare and specialist said it comes from over active use of legs like sports, gymnastics. Operation did help him but seems it has it in other leg too We have no idea why he had this because he has not been active in sports etc in the past 6 years. Please let me know. Thanks !

Mitch, that's not true about being unsuccessful suing. I'm communicating right now with a big law firm that has won millions against the pharmaceutical company, but so far it has only been successful for victims with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I'm trying to get that to sue for other immune deficiency problems and particular for Ankylosing Spondylitis. I should learn their decision next week. I've already told them I'm communicating with others who suffer awful joing and muscle pain. Doctors hate to admit it was accutane, but one of my son's doctors said it was definitely accutane. I'm so sorry to hear about your son. He needs a really good rheumatologist. What part of the country do you live in? Maybe I can get you a referral.
