I have had 16 iron infusions one each week for the last 16 weeks. When I first started my Ferritin was 4 and Bind Cap 430 now my Ferritin is 126 with a Bind Cap 266. I start another 8 week round this week. I'm concerned that we are not finding out the real reason my iron is so low and however going up in some areas and clearly going down in other areas. The process is so frustrating I could just cry, then I quickly remind myself that it could be so much worse. I experiance chest/lung pain, back pain, #2s;( for a couple days then life is back to normal till the next week. I would like to know a diagnosis rather than you're Anemic... ## Hi, Alicia! There are many reasons it could happen, most associated with bleeding. Has your menstrual cycle been heavier or longer than usual? Are...

I The iron infusion is causing me a lot of side effects. The docs say I am very anemic. and must have iron put back in my body as quickly as possible.I have flu like symptoms, am naseas, very weak ## I am not an MD by any means, however after gathering information on Iv Iron Infusion I found it to be a mildly dangerous approach to reaching your iron equilibrium; due to all the possible side effects associated with it. Have you tried asking your doctor about any natural alternatives that carry less side effects? Such as: Foods high in iron, or some other way to help your body absorb iron at a more efficient rate. Please post back if you have any questions or information to add, and I will help you. ## I had oral iron for 7 months. Upon checking my iron levels (for the first time) the doc...

ok so i had an IV infusion 8 yrs ago due to major blood loss from my 2nd child..the doctor who did it told me there would be like aching in my joints especially my knees and that it would go away in a year only problem is its been 8 and they still hurt especially in the cold....just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else or if its normal .... ## Yes, the pain can be a side effect of iron infusions, but for most people it goes away in a few hours. Have you consulted your doctor to get to the root of the problem? You should really do so to determine if it was caused by the treatment, or if it is being caused by something else.

Hello. I had my first today. I'm experiencing pain above my rib cage and below my breast with pain in back as well. ## Yes! I had iron infusion yesterday which had to be stopped because of exactly the pain you described! I was worried it was just me. It is still present today along with extreme fatigue, headache, sore joints and throat. I feel dreadful to be honest. It's been a few days for you now, how are you feeling now? ## Aches and pains are completely normal, when receiving iron infusions and sadly, they sometimes don't go away, but continue for life in some people, as listed by the FDA. It is, of course, always best to have your pain checked out by a doctor to be sure, but it is highly likely that it's related to the infusion. Is there anything else I can help with?

Still sleeping all the time even after infusions ## Iron infusion therapy is a treatment in which iron is put intravenously into the body. If it hasn't done anything for you physically, mentally, or emotionally, I would wonder if iron deficiency was even a problem to begin with? Other common causes of fatigue and sleepiness throughout the day could also be determined by: -Water intake -Vitamin B12 levels -Caloric intake (including the "types" of foods you're eating) -Vitamin D levels (or not getting outside enough) -Seasonal depression -etc… Have you had all of your levels checked, or was it just for iron in particular?

I had my first Iron Infusion yesterday of Dextran. I am severely anemic. They gave me benadryl, some steroids and then a 1 hour test dose. Passed that and then onto the 3 hour drip. Everything went fine. Last night I started feeling very weak and achy, hurting in my bones and joints kinda like flu symptoms. I ran a low grade fever and couldn't sleep. Today the flu symptoms are worse and my bones hurt soo bad. Doctor said this in normal side effects and can last from 2 to 4 days. Has anyone else had anything similar happen to them. I am soo weak and I can't stand to miss that much work but I have no energy. I am suppose to monitor fever or chest pains and go back in 2 weeks for labs to see if I need another infusion. He's talking about a biopsy to see why my body is not absor...

I had my first Ferinject IV iron infusion a month ago. Had an allergic reaction prior to flushing and had to have antihistamines. It also brought on a hemorrhagic period the next day which lasted heavy for three days. I'm one month on and just started another heavy clotting period. Is this a side effect? ## I have just had a super heavy period, 1 week after a ferinject. The period was on time, but so heavy! ## Many medications can affect your menstrual period, according to NIH studies. This infusion may also cause nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and joint/muscle aches. Are you on any other medications?

I had my first infusion on Friday. I am having another one this coming Friday. My blood pressure has been very high and I feel awful especially in the mornings. As the day progresses, I seem to start to feel better. How long until all of these side effects stop? I also have a lot of pressure in my head at times. Not a full headache but just pressure. I wonder if it is all worth it. My ferritin level was only 5 so it was necessary. ## Hello, Sharon! How are you feeling? These infusions usually cause low blood pressure, not high. How high has it been? You should have it checked out. It is especially concerning, with the pressure you're feeling in your head. The FDA lists the infusions normal side effects as possibly including dizziness, faintness, bloating and chest pain. ## I was giv...

I had my first Injectafer infusion. I felt ok during it except a little sleepy. Then about an hour later I had extreme nausea and just had to go to bed and sleep through it. The next day the nausea had passed but that was not enjoyable. ## I'm sorry that you felt so ill, however, the can be a normal side effect of such infusions, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience dizziness, headache and joint/muscle aches. It might be best to ask your doctor what you can take for the nausea in the future to try to prevent it. Is there anything else I can help with?

I just had my first iron infusion yesterday. While i was at the hospital everything was fine. Now im havin chest pains and diarrhea is that normal? ## Hello, I had 8 iron infusions of ferillicit (sp) in june and july of 2011 with no side effects. Ask your doctor to write a prescription for benadryl to be given first before the infusion. It worked for me and hopefully will work for you. Good luck ## Dot, to be honest if you got away without suffering any side effects, you were actually one of the lucky few. Yes, it can cause the side effects that were mentioned, as well as others, such as muscle and joint pain, which linger long after the treatments took place. Has your doctor provided you with any advice to dealing with them? ## I had iron treatment for the first time a few days ago and...

I recently had an iron infusion for low iron levels. A short time later I went to have my hair cut and dyed. As the girl was applying the dye, my hair started to turn purple. It was washed out and I was unable to complete the hair dying process. Does anyone have and information on the effect of iron infusions on the hair and how long will it remain in the hair? ## There is a chance that it was actually due to your low iron levels, rather than the iron infusion. Hemoglobin provides your hair with its red tones, so if you are low in iron, it can wash your natural hair color out to a different shade, which can alter how a dye works on your hair. If you've been dying your hair all along, you may not have even noticed a change, since anemia only affects your natural color. It may take a ...

Venofer- So, for a yr now I've been receiving IV iron infusions . My first set was beginning of 2013 having 8 of them with only mild headaches and feeling tired. This time my side effects have been many. I'm getting chest pains, nausea, extreme weakness, hot and cold chills, itching that makes me feel as though I'm going nuts, muscle weakness, moodiness, stomach pains that make me feel as though I'm dying, tongue and lip numbness too. Hope no one else is suffering from these side effects such as what I'm experiencing. It's a bummer. So tired. I wanna be well again. I even get heart palpitations too. This Friday 2-7-14,will be my last infusion for a while. I'll be sure to have nurse administer me Benadryl to lesson the side effects. ## Hello, Evelyn! How are y...

I've been getting infushions for 2 years now, my hemo count wil get down as low as a 2.5, I now have had to quit my job and go on disibilty. The side effects suck! I have stomach pain to the point that I wanna go to the er. With all the infushions my veins are gone, and the next step for me will be a central pic line. This is no picnic, and something I wish I had never agreed to. ## Iron infusions are very bad for causing severe side effects, some of them linger years after treatment is completed. I am very sorry about what you are going through. Did you talk to your doctor about something that may help with the stomach pain? ## I think your Dr. is giving you too high of a dose. Ask him to reduce the amount he is giving you each week and see how you feel. I have been getting them no...

I had my first iron infusion on Monday (it is now Sunday) as I am severely iron deficient. I was not informed that there would be any side effects by my doctor or hematologist. Since Monday I have been bedridden with the worst migraines, chronic nausea, shoulder and neck muscle spasms, loss of appetitive, heightened sense of smell which in turn makes me vomit a lot, no energy, swollen glands, the feeling that something is crawling under my skin, itchiness, irritability, needing to urinate excessively, clammy mouth and sore joints. Is this normal? I've been to the doctor and he just gave me anti nausea medication which hasn't worked. I'm freaking out. I've just wasted a whole week in bed and still feel awful. ## Everything you've described are listed as possible side ...

I've suffered with low iron for over 20 yrs..only taking prescription iron pills..and otc...because of GI issues relating to iron pills my GI doctor decided on ferritin IV infusions. My side effects arent bad if given benadryl..My only issue is seeing NO change.after now my 3rd infusion .Im still extremely weak and can no longer work. The feeling of no energy is upsetting from day to day..I pray I improve.. ## Hello, Cyndi! How are you feeling? I'm sorry about the problem you're having. Most people complain about suffering severe side effects from the infusions and, in quite a few cases, they were permanent and never went away, so you are unique, but it's awful that it still isn't helping. I really hope you improve. How often are you getting them? ## The meds you are...

I had government assistance which i had medical coverage since i had a baby and at the time did not have a job. Now i have a job and as soon as i get it i find out i make too much and can't afford the iron infusions i need and the insurances plans i have seen are way too much for a single mother getting on her feet so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or help ## It may help more if you can tell us what area you are in? Then people may be better familiar with what programs could be available to help you. Can you please post back? I understand the situation you are in, it is sad and happens to many people.

I'm female, age 82 in good health.. In the hospital my hemoglobin was 6, so I was given 2 blood infusions. I felt better. Then the dr wanted to give me iron infusions. They gave me two. Afterwards I was able to drive myself home. The next day I began to feel awful.. every joint in my body hurt.. unsteadiness on my feet.. plus my IV site is aching and swollen and pinkish colored. I have no appetite at all. Why wasn't I warned this may happen to me? I live alone and don't feel up to a trip to the ER. Will this improve? ## The IV site might be developing an infection, so you should have it check out, just to be sure. As to the other symptoms, the FDA does list them as possible side effects, and no, they may not all go away. Some people do experience them for life, after receivi...

I have had 2 ferritin iron infusions one week after another. 2 days later after the second one I was very dizzy upon standing and my pressure went very low for me. That was 3 weeks ago. I now have low blood pressure all the time, from high blood pressure that I had for 8 years. Off blood pressure meds, having things with salt. Cardiologist can't find an explanation unless it's the infusion that caused this. At wits end. Anybody ever hear of this ? Hematologist insists it's not infusion after so long. ## Yes, the NIH and the FDA both list blood pressure changes as being possible side effects, additionally, it is also well known that some people never stop experiencing them, after receiving such infusions. I have talked to many other people that have experienced serious issues...

I took five iron infusion to try to build up my blood count, but in the process my hair came out all over my head. My doctor said he looked up side effects and didn't see that one. Told him I would bring him a copy that it is so. Help. I know it comes back but does it need help? ## It actually isn't a listed side effect of supplementing your iron, it is usually caused by your being low in iron, so it was more than likely caused by the deficiency that required you to undergo the infusions. Rectifying the problem, since you've had the infusions, should help it to correct itself. There are some medications and supplements that may help, but they also carry the risk of side effects, so you may be better off to just let it grow back on its own. Are there any other questions? ## I...

I received iron infusions in the spring of 2016...Here it is December of 2016 and I am suffering from severe itching mainly on my lower legs and also my arms. I have not been told by a doctor that this would be the price I have to pay for building up my iron. I believe that I was given way too much. I have been to a skin Dr, Hematologist, had several blood tests, Etc. I wish that someone can come up with an answer. I would truly appreciate it... Thank you so much!!! ## The NIH and FDA both warn that some side effects caused by iron infusions carry the risk of being permanent, including body aches, and joint pain. It really doesn't have anything to do with being given too much, it's just the nature of how it works in some people's bodies. Does anything help alleviate the itch...
