Side Effects Of Nitrofurantoin Monomac (Page 2)

After completion of this drug regimen, I find that I am having terrible gas. My gut hurts, but I don't seem to pass it. Is this a common side effect? If so, what helps?

I to was onvthis medication for three days never been so ill , severe chills and fevers , vomiting , cant eat, abdominal pain n brown aweful smelling urine, I have no energy and want to sleep , I have violent headaches and cough , and yellowing of eyes, the pain in my kidneys is cronic, I am 60 yrs of age and although not been on much medication throughout my life, I would not recommend this one , ive only been on it for three days and long for these side affects to pass

UK based 30 year old female here! I have one of these pills left of a three day course and it seems to have made my symptoms worse so far. I started with cold / throat symptoms, slight stomach upset, a frequent need to urinate and lots of urine when I went, pain in my kidneys but no burning on urination, cloudy urine and severe fatigue and dry mouth. Dr saw that I had protein, but not blood in my urine and prescribed this. A couple of hours after taking this medication I feel extremely nauseous, horrible burning sensation in my stomach / liver area that moved about, severe headache, chills, muscle pains (as if I've been working out and particularly in my glutes weirdly), loss of appetite, gurgling GI tract, sweating and more. Kidney pain is intermittent now, but I very much hope these symptoms stop tomorrow!

Yes me too , I only took 1/2 of the bottle and also got tummy cramps real bad gas and very constipated it's awful ! I just can't take antibiotics , it messes up my stomach

Omg I took micrbid and omg the stomach cramps are unbearable never again and I only took 2 doses soo upset

Update!! I had gastritis and proton pump inhibitors have helped me so much.
The frightening dizzyness has now gone

Hey Mara, I am in the same exact boat as you except I was left with different symptoms, short of breath. I feel like this drug has completely screwed up my life too and it would be cool to talk to someone, a young woman like myself, who understands exactly what I am going through. I too love to travel and am not sure how that will happen in the future. Please write me back if you read this so we can share our experiences, though I hope you are feeling better now.

I was always prescribed a Sulfa Drug for a
bladder infection.I cannot take what I was prescribed which was Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystal. Horrible Stomach Pains, Diarrhea.This is a new Dr. I was alway's prescribed a Sulfa Drug.

I'm so pleased to read this post!

I began having sever stomach cramps and what felt like trapped gas a day before I stopped taking it.
It's been 6 days now since I ended the medication and I'm still in discomfort.
Did you manage to find anything that helped?

Prescribed Nitrofurantoin by a hospital doctor after other antibiotics failed to work for my UTI (4Weeks). Within 2 hours suffered almost unbearable painful cramps & abdominal pain. Took a 2nd dose and the pains returned + vomiting & dry reaching.Please be careful if you are trying this antibiotic as it could cause great levels of pain.

Okay I've been taking this medicine for almost a week now and I noticed that my stomach is severely swollen and in pain is this normal as anyone else having this problem

Hi Nina, after being diagnosed with a UTI and being prescribed to the macrobid, immediately I noticed a shaking feeling on the inside but my mom felt it was from the energy drink I was drinking, I started having diarrhea after everything I ate. I spoke with a triage nurse 3-4 days after stopping the meds and she suggested I come in after speaking with me for 20 mins. They rechecked and said my UTI had gone away and to stop the macrobid immediately and stick to a BRAT diet for the next few days. I have been off this medication for 4 days but have had excruciating pains in my stomach, constipation, nausea, shortness of breath, and no appetite. I'd love to talk with you. I understand it has changed your life and I am very fearful of what it is doing to mine. I am going to the hospital in a few hours hopefully to get an IV for hydration and pain meds. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from others as well! Thank you!

I also developed hives 5 days after finishing 7day course of nitrofurantoin and so glad that I am not the only one. I got steroid shot and taking corticosteroid and still feeling so miserable.

Yes yes and yes! Just finished my 2nd day and my trapped gas is worse than normal, for me. I’m swollen all around my sides and back.
I have issues with this trapped gas for decades.
This feels different. Like I said it my sides and back are also affected. It hurts when I do movements and stretches to ease the pain and bloating too. What do you think?

Hi Nina, I took nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) at the end of this last December and my life has been horrible ever since. I have barely been able to leave my house the past month and a half because symptoms are so bad. I'm trying to find other people that this has happened to and would love to talk to you about it. I'm very concerned these symptoms won't go away and feel it has affected my entire body. Chills, vertigo, vision issues/floaters, cold hands and feet, extreme stomach pain, horrible anxiety/panic attacks, burning in arms and legs, tingling in whole body, severe sensitivity to sunlight. It has been 3 months and this is absolutely horrible.

I was searching for an answer to why I’m in so much pain after taking this antibiotic and found this forum. This is the second time I have been crippled over in agony after taking this medication. First my doctor thought it was pancreatitis due to the positioning of the pain, I sat in A&E for 6 hours for the bloods/ scan to come back normal, was then prescribed ant acids and buscopan to relax my stomach but this time I am taking both and they aren’t helping at all. I’m in so much pain just above my belly button and it radiates through to my back and sides. The antibiotic cleared the UTI after 1 week but my doctor is telling me it wouldn’t be the antibiotics causing the pain. Also I have developed severe itching around the same time as this pain and this has happened both times. My pain doesn’t come whilst I’m taking the antibiotic, the first time it came 2 days after stopping and this time it came the day after stopping. What are people doing to help the pain? I’m off work for the second time due to nothing helping ease the pain. HELP!!
