Side Effects Of Nitrofurantoin Monomac (Top voted first)

After completion of this drug regimen, I find that I am having terrible gas. My gut hurts, but I don't seem to pass it. Is this a common side effect? If so, what helps?

I developed a severe itchy rash on my arms and legs 4 days after finished 7 days on Nitrofurantoin mono/mac.prescribed for a UTI. I am taking a steroid for the rash now and it is better.
Was this reaction cause by the drug taken?

I am currently on day 5 of a week-long regimen for a routine UTI. I, too, am suffering awful abdominal pain and gas/bloating/diarrhea since starting this drug. Glad to see I'm not the only one on here experiencing these effects. I'm going to call my prescribing physician to see if this is normal and will post more later.

i too was prescribed nitrofurantoin for a urinary tract infection.. i did not take full course, i developed very bad side effects, sever stomach cramping , constipated, dizzy, bad headach . even after stopping med, i have remained with sever gas pains that make me double over in pain , and constipated. i never had any problems with my digestive tract very normal bowels. now i suffer everyday with ibs symtoms . i blame medication because like i said i never had these types of problems,and it all started when i took
medication. this is a very bad medication and should not be prescribed

With the very first pill I experienced the worst cramps in my life and went to the bathroom 10 times. Can't call dr until the morning but I am going to assume I should skip my dose tonight until I can speak with a dr. since it is clearly not sitting well with me. Is this normal and are there alternate meds. I know UTI are equally dangerous and want to know if I have to endure this!

Like you, Sally, just finished my 8 day course...abdominal pains persisting...and tons of flatulance. I'm taking probiotics daily with yogurt too....it's no fun.

Took this nitrofurantoin for a UTI infection on the 5th day the gas and stomach cramps were horrible. Called the Dr he was out of town then they said these could be side effects of the drug, I feel worse now then before I knew I had a UTI.

I am on it for a UTI and I have horrible bloating and gas I can't pass. It says not to take with an antacid containing magnesium trisilicate, but I don't know if Gas X contains that or not. I don't care. I'm taking a Gas X anyway and calling my doctor tomorrow because the gas and constipation feels worse than the UTI. Will also eat a lot of yogurt for some pro-biotic bacteria.

Yes! Never take this drug. I was misdiagnosed with a UTI (it was a burst cyst). I had completely normal digestion and enjoyed spicy food. A year later after going on that drug ( also known as Macrobid) I'm eating an extremely limited diet and STILL have diarrhea. My life has been completely screwed up by that drug. It was so bad last summer my doctor thought I had Crohn's, then SIBO, but he ruled out both - of course. I love to travel, but I'm not even sure how that will happen in the future. The FODMAP diet has helped...but only a little.

ok im 26 weeks pregnant having te same symptoms im supposed to take every night before bed and at 4 oclock it never fails i wake up in extreme agony curld in a ball crying my eyes out in pain i sit on the toilet with diarhea and nasty burbs nausea and headaches its killing me just the most horrible gas pains ive ever experienced im done screw my doctor its not worth it thank yall for sharing your stories and helping me make up my mind

Whenever you take any antibiotic you should always take probiotics to replace the "good" gut flora that the antibiotic kills. UTIs can be avoided by taking cranberry capsules daily which change the Ph of your urine and make it harder for the microbes that cause the infection to multiply. Some folks can use 1/2 tsp baking soda daily in 8 oz. of water. Easy to try to see if it works for you.

I to was onvthis medication for three days never been so ill , severe chills and fevers , vomiting , cant eat, abdominal pain n brown aweful smelling urine, I have no energy and want to sleep , I have violent headaches and cough , and yellowing of eyes, the pain in my kidneys is cronic, I am 60 yrs of age and although not been on much medication throughout my life, I would not recommend this one , ive only been on it for three days and long for these side affects to pass

I'm so pleased to read this post!

I began having sever stomach cramps and what felt like trapped gas a day before I stopped taking it.
It's been 6 days now since I ended the medication and I'm still in discomfort.
Did you manage to find anything that helped?

Drink heaps of water and get on a probiotic regime. Fiber can sometimes make the irritation worse and make it take longer to recover, so try to eat bland foods for a time. Hope that helps. Pain is the pits.

I took this drug three times in a row trying to clear up my uti. No bad side effects which is unusual since I cannot tolerate three other popular antibiotics. My evaluation said that my infection was sensitive to this drug. I have just taken the one dose antibiotic Monurol and I am also on Prelief to take the acid out of what I eat and drink. Also, I take D-Mannose which is wonderful for making the bacteria not able to stick to the walls of the bladder. Next I bought on the Internet a small Bidet that hangs on the back of the toilet and hooks up to the bottom of the toilet. Metal, really keeps you fresh and clean. My surgery is the day after tomorrow and I think I will pass the evaluation finally. By the way the Bidet was 49.95 and is quality built. Good luck to me and to all the rest of you!! God Bless!

I also finished the same medicine Saturday it is Tuesday and I am also experiencing the same symptoms as you. Nothing seems to help but walking for me it eases symptoms a little for me.

UK based 30 year old female here! I have one of these pills left of a three day course and it seems to have made my symptoms worse so far. I started with cold / throat symptoms, slight stomach upset, a frequent need to urinate and lots of urine when I went, pain in my kidneys but no burning on urination, cloudy urine and severe fatigue and dry mouth. Dr saw that I had protein, but not blood in my urine and prescribed this. A couple of hours after taking this medication I feel extremely nauseous, horrible burning sensation in my stomach / liver area that moved about, severe headache, chills, muscle pains (as if I've been working out and particularly in my glutes weirdly), loss of appetite, gurgling GI tract, sweating and more. Kidney pain is intermittent now, but I very much hope these symptoms stop tomorrow!

Hey Mara, I am in the same exact boat as you except I was left with different symptoms, short of breath. I feel like this drug has completely screwed up my life too and it would be cool to talk to someone, a young woman like myself, who understands exactly what I am going through. I too love to travel and am not sure how that will happen in the future. Please write me back if you read this so we can share our experiences, though I hope you are feeling better now.
