Patp: Verwon is so right--it is pretty common to prescribe a combination of medications when chronic pain is the problem. Different medications help different aspects of the pain. I'm speaking as someone who has suffered from severe body-wide chronic pain for 22 years, though it is worse in some areas. I take a muscle relaxant (Skelaxin) plus two narcotic pain relievers. One is a time release formula; the other is a faster acting one that doesn't last as long. One prescription is oxycodone (in the form of Oxycontin which gives me the time release benefit and the other is Dilaudid. I also take Alprazolam (Xanax) to help with the anxiety and sleeplessness that chronic pain can produce. I want to encourage you to take your medications in order to give you well-deserved relief and let you know that I have never experienced any side effects from any of them, except a mild "relaxing" feeling from the Skelaxin (probably why it's called a muscle RELAXANT!) I know I am physically dependent on the oxycodone. However, given that my condition has no standard treatment and no cure, I expect that I will need it for the rest of my life anyway so I'm not concerned about the dependence factor. I have taken it for 15 years with no problems and, while I realize that everyone can respond differently, it is certainly worth a try. Again, please allow yourself to experience the relief that these prescribed medications offer so that you can reclaim all or at least some of your life; it's well worth it. All the best to you.

Hello, Patp! How are you?

The FDA classifies Methocarbamol as a muscle relaxant and its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth.

Meloxicam is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that's used to treat pain, fever and swelling. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and stomach irritation.

These both help with pain, but in different ways and it's very common to prescribe several, to try to help someone get control of their pain.

Is there anything else I can help with?
