Do You Gain Weight With Suboxone? (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

Hi I'm just starting to research suboxone. I'm currently going to a methadone clinic every day and it is such a hassle. I have to get up every morning at 4am to be there in time to get to work the line is so long but that's beside my point, My real question is Do you gain weight with Suboxone? This is my third attempt at trying to get off of opiates by taking Methadone but every single time I start taking Methadone I gain 40 to 60 pounds within the first 4 months. Most people do, some don't I just happen to be one of them. I get so discouraged by the weight gain that I stop going to the Methadone clinic and then start using again. Sadly my mom died from using the same drug I used before treatment. I have 3 children and want to get my life together again but I just can't cope with the weight gain. Can anyone tell me if Suboxone has the same side affect? And also is there any difference between Suboxone & Suboxine? PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks for posting! I am thinking of going from methadone to suboxone, but only for 1-2 months and then ween myself off the suboxone instead of doing a full detox from methadone. I know methadone is not easy to come off of, actually probably almost impossible. If you can give me any insight to how your detox/withdrawl is going from the suboxone I would really appreciate it. I am not to worried about the mental aspect of coming off as much as I am the physical aspect, it scares the hell out of me. I was a H- addict for 3-4years and have been on methadone, clean for over 8years and I have no desire to ever pick up another drug, just to get released from this prison that methadone makes me feel like I am in . When I was done with H, all I wanted was to stop chasing...I was so tired! Each time I tried to get clean I could not make it through 2-3days clean without being in severe pain. I have major dental work that I need and the H helped ease the pain. So I did a methadone study and realized that this was subsiding my dental pain and so I started the methadone program 8 years ago. My thought was to stay on Methadone until I could afford my dental work done, so now I am at that point...FINALLY! My life has been so depressing since, having dental issues, not being able to smile, take my kids to a soccer game because of being embarrassed etc., etc.... So now I am starting the process of getting my dental work done and I finally will be able to smile again and once complete then my hope is to start the process of getting off of methadone. Once off I will be able to smile, socialize, fit into all of my old clothes, not be embarrassed because I've gained soooooo.. much weight...I will finally be able to get up from sitting without limping because my knees hurt from being overweight, I'll have my smooth skin back and Oh...I will be able to go #2 on a regular schedule etc, etc.....on and on and on and on! I am just trying to find the most successful way of getting off of methadone, whether it's transitioning over to suboxone or going to a rapid drug detox? Anyone with input please help me, I'm anxious...I really want to be done with this ASAP! (one other thing that makes this process maybe a little bit more stressfull than usual is that I have 5 children and I have to run our small family business from our home) Thanks for listening!!

I am at day 7 of detox from subs. I jumped from 6mg to 2 to 1mg wiThing two months. IvI've never been on methadone but I can relate to pain. I have severe colitis. Sub was the only thing that helped however, I gained 35 pounds from it too. can't afford it anymore. I want to be clean again. I had almost 10 years drug free before I started pain meds again.everyone is different. For me, subs made me lifeless and I have isolated myself for 4 years. Its numbs you of any emotion. I am taking anantidepressant now that I'm detoxing. Its not easy. But iI want to beat this demon. Good luck. Keep us posted on your journey.

So after 13 years of opiates I finally went on Subutex it's like suboxone with out the narcon. I had never a wieght issue. Now .....omg I eat nothing Way Less than before starting and I weigh 140!!!! Also my hair has thinned out. I have been on them 8 months. I'm going to taper down myself and get off these things. 1 was at my heaviest on pills 20 to 25 and day at 127. That was with eating like a pig. Then I take these and 30 days later next appt with dr. I was 137. Now 140. Also I have had a FLAT stomach my whole life and I can pinch at least an inch of fat. It's frustrating! It also stresses me out more so than PMS. SO even tho the dr. The pharmaceutical Co and the pharmacist says it doesn't cause weight gain ...IT DOES AND FAST. Anyone notice hair thinning out? Anyways ..I did want you guys to look up this drug called baclofen . It was originally for MS patient's but the found 60mg a day helped withdrawals. I've been taking it and plan on staying on at least until I wean off these. In Subutex and Suboxone favor I do have to say it saved my life. It is def a drug for SHIRT TERM USE. I have been on 8 months. I've gotten used to feeling again and I didn't want to jeopardise relapse by staying on it for short term. So now I'm ready to start living without any cruch. If anyone put there is planning on weaning off in May...Let's help each other through it.

I have been on subs for 6 yes almost, for me it has. Been the best thing ever however, I have gained at least 75lbs maybe more! My doc has told me its because my life style had changed so much, before sub my doc was methadone/morphine. I now have high blood pressure and depression as well. I have asked doc how long someone should stay on subs and she told me that studies are showing it may be a life long medication because addiction is a desease, its just like a diabetic needing insulin... I'm not sure how I feel about that but I've been on it so long I am afraid to go through withdrawl.

Hi Melisa, I reduced down to 40 mgs then after 48 hrs (In fact I think it was a little less time) went onto Suboxone. I think I took my last dose of Methadone early am then waited until the next day. Basically you need to be in withdrawal & I seem to go in to withdrawal quicker than others so my Dr let me take it earlier & I was fine as I was in withdrawal which is the key. Even with the Subi I need my dose each day & don't know how people can just miss a day! It took me 3 weeks to stablise & I had to go up to 24mgs of Suboxe which I was disappointed about. It wasn't pain free at all but was bearable. If your allowed to take Subutext I don't think you need to wait as it doesn't have Naltrexone in it. I am now down to 3.2mg but I have had a very rough time reducing as I work a physical job which makes it go through your system faster. It is worth it though. At 150mgs, for example, if you had an accident you would have a hard time finding pain relief as your dose is so high so you really need to get down. It's taken me 4 years of reducing, being well then sick constantly to get off this medication. I am not there yet & still fearful but I will never rely on drugs again & other than the three weeks & odd day off here & there I have managed to work although the rest of my life has suffered dramatically. It is worth it though. I feel like I am in prison. I can't have a normal life on it, as it takes away my motivation & I feel tired all the time & just can't be bothered. That is not a life. I suffer depression constantly & don't have family support. I am very much on my own, I think people look at me & just think I'm lazy. My point being, that if I can do it anyone can.

PS. Melisa, even when I am stable I start feeling very slight withdrawal symptoms in the evening & I don't feel good in the mornings. I think it depends a lot on how active you are & also each individual. I was on this stuff once before for only a year & never felt withdrawals but this time has been come rely different. I think getting older is also a factor.

Tracy,
I was disillusioned by the pink cloud of suboxen. It has all the positive affects you mentioned and unexpected weight gain! ( I early have an appetite! My doctor assured me that he is slowly weening me off; yet it has been 4 months alreay. My dose started at 8mg/2 twice a day. Now it's down to 2mg/1 3 times a day. I have weened myself to 1 tab of 2mg a day. Next Monday, it will be reduced to 3/4 until I can't get the least anount of withdrawral. Hopefull the age the 22lbs I gained will also dissapear. since this process began! It's so hard to admit you have a problem and ask for help. It is worse when the MD wants you to stay on as long as possible. ( I don't know if this the same case as MD.).
I have done a great deal of research and very few doctors will prescribe this drug or have a license to. With that being said, does your MD have you to his pharmacy or make attend 'outpatient'? And what are the consequence if you don't follow the plan? No more suboxene which has withdrawals like opiods. The longer you are on it, the harder it is to get off.

I hope this validates you're not overeating or working out to stay in shape. I wish you & your boyfriend strength to be heathy. Life is too short to be addicted to suboxen or any substance and gaining weight.

I am on suboxone also. I went to my doctors and she wants me to cut down to 2 mg. film a day. I have always been thin so when I started gaining the weight I did not want to leave the house. I have gained 21 pounds. I am so upset. I am going to a lower dose, so hopefully I will lose it. My doctor said it does not make people gain weight. I have to say she is wrong on this one.

CORT: Most of these ORT's can cause weight gain. I think Methadone is the absolute worst for this. I really didn't gain much weight with Subutex, but with Methadone? OMG, I was eating the same, exercising the same, gained 20 lbs within about 3 months. UGH!!

Tim

I find your attempt to inform a stranger of an effective treatment protocol without benefit of a basic history presumptuous to say the very least.I feel blessed that my clinic experience differed 180 degrees from what you CLAIM are the standard norms.Although nutrition is important in any aspect of life ones belief in your God reeks of hypocrisy.I only hope others take YOUR advice with a grain of salt because that's about the true value of suggestions like your own....

Tim goes on a forum about medicine, and starts "preaching". He knows NOTHING about the commentor, yet makes MULTIPLE assumptions. Tim is to be ignored, plain and simple.

Hey Timmy? "Do you by chance know what should be the corresponding starting dose for someone that is switching from Methadone to Suboxone? I think not." Yet ANOTHER moronic assumption. Yes, in fact, since I am involved in medical research, AND have personal experience with both of those drugs, I actually DO know. But since you think you know more than everyone else, I will go ahead and just let you think that. "I think not".... wow, you REALLY are in love with yourself, eh? Self-righteous people like yourself are a dime a dozen. Normally they can just be "blown off", as they SHOULD be. But people are on here looking for ACTUAL HELP. You seem to think you are the only one on here that can help anyone, but in reality you are a clueless monkey. I hope, as someone else said, that EVERYONE ON HERE DOES INDEED TAKE YOUR SO-CALLED "ADVICE" WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. Better yet, just plain throw it out with the trash.

Maybe you should go pray for some more humility.

Tracy, I also wanted to say that both suboxone and subutex made me gain weight. But now that i think about it subutex has caused more weight gain than suboxone did. I totally understand your frustration. I am right there with you. Same situation.. I used to have an eating disorder and used drugs to stay thin. Gaining weight while doing the right thing which is staying sober just sucks cause i don't want to relapse.

I've been on Suboxone for about a year and haven't had any weight gain at all. I haven't really noticed any side-effects. I'm currently taking about one half of a (I think) 2 mg suboxone per day. I've had a very positive experience with this drug. If you really wanna quit opiates, I think this is the best, safest, and easiest way to do it. I don't know what Soboxine is... I think Subutox or something like that might be used to start a suboxone regimen, but I'm not sure about that.

I have been on suboxone for five months. Prior to that I was on norco for a year and a half battling with a bone disease. While I have been 115-120 my entire life I have gained about 39 pounds since all the opiate use. The confusing thing to me is that my eating habits never really changed.I have lost a few pounds since starting the sub

I have been taking Suboxone for 3 years now. I was SEVERLY addicted to pain meds for 10 years. Suboxone gave me my life back and I have been clean for 3 years now. BUT, If I only knew what suboxone would do to me. I have ALWAYS been very thin and have weighed 115pds in my 20's & 30's even after having 3 children I was in PERFECT shape. I slowely started to gain weight on suboxone over the last 3 years. The weight gain started on day one. I am a healthy eater & never really eat alot at all...I eat like a bird. I have put on 30pds over the last 3 years. I have been trying to get this weight off for the last 2 years...its driving me NUTS!! Diets, excersise is not taking it off. The thing that will help a little is reducing the amount of suboxone I will take. When I have tried to wing myself off the drug than I would notice I was loosing weight. I also have been really deppressed since I have been on suboxone and have absolutely no motivation....that is not who I am...I have always been really active & on top of things....not anymore. I also have MAJOR constipation issues. I cant have a bowel movemoenty without laxatives like Milk of mag or magnesium citrate. I can go weeks without a bowel movement. Suboxone is better than being on drugs....but I hate the weight gain, deppression, no motivation and constipation it has caused....plus it is a pain in the butt because I have to take this medicine EVERY day in the morning to even focus on starting my day and letting the pills disolve takes forever....my dentist also said suboxone is really bad for a persons mouth and you can get the same mouth sores & bad teeth like methadone & meth can cause...its real bad for your mouth if you take 8mg a day. I have not had that happen yet except my teeth have become more sensitive. I want off the meidcine so bad....Im not myself and I feel so insecure & down lately. If I only knew 10years ago what pain pills would do to my life!

I have had the same problem. I was seriously addicted to pain pills for years. I have been taking suboxone for 3 years. It is great for the cravings but the weight gain is CRAZY! I have always been about 115 -120pds, even after having 3 babies. I have never had to diet or excersise and have just had good metabolism. I remember going to see the doctor the first time to get on suboxone and I weighed 117pds. Every month after that I would put weight on when I weighed in at the doctors office. So 3 years have gone by & I have been on suboxone for 3 years but I am SO MAD!! I am 140 pds now. The ONLY time I have put this much weight on is when I was 9monthes pregnant with my kids! I excersise & have been dieting...it has not helped. The ONLY thing that has helped me loose weight is reducing the amount of suboxone I take. I usually take 8mg (4 pills 2mg a pill) a day. I have cut it in half. I am only taking 2 suboxone (4mg) a day now...well I have almost lost 10pds. since I cut down a month ago. Sometimes I will feel withdrawel symptoms & I will take one more (3 pills 6mg) a day & I will instantly put 2 more pounds on the next day. When I have only taking 2 pills a day than I will loose the pounds. I have plataued on my weight lose. I have been trying to get out of my 130's into my 120's for a month now with dieting & excersise and I cant lose anymore weight. Im going to try taking only 1 suboxone a day and eventually wing off whithin the next month. This medicine makes me so mad! Never have I ever had weight problems, but I have since I got on this med. the less of the dosage I take I will lose some weight...but not enough...I just need to get off this med. Hopefully by the end of February I will be totally off suboxone & Im keeping my fingers crossed my weight will decrease...it has so far just cutting down the dosage....lI will se what happens & when I do get off suboxone & IF I do lose this weight I will come back to this site and let everybody know the prognosis. So this med does cause weight gain and I wish my doctor would have told me. My doctor was suppose to wing me off the first year I was on this med...but he has not even talked about it. So Im going to do it myself and so far I have lost 10pds by cutting my dosage in half.
